Rick Astley is a friend of a friend and I met him about 4 years ago at my friends birthday do. I have to say that Rick is one of the nicest and obliging people that I've ever met. He had time for everyone that night and was very much in demand. Lovely fella. He did sing and showed us all that he could in fact sing brilliantly.

As much as I was never a fan of the hit songs he had, it was always obvious to me that he was a very talented singer. Glad to see some of the videos floating around TH-cam showing how great of a person he seems to be, great guitar player, decent drummer, he's really shot up my list of people I'd like to meet.

I once saw him in a ski resort in France, Val d'isere in the early 90s. he was in this bar we were in called Dick's Tea-Bar I think. My dad, his mates and me (13 at the time) were all looking over. At one point one of his crew came over and whispered conspiratorially, "in case you're wondering - it is him!" in this delighted kind of way. We decided not to bother him after that as his friend seemed more of a handful. Not sure where this story is going - I like the guy.

It's so wholesome seeing "hardcore" bands being buddies with "cheesy" musicians and looking up to each other and respecting each other -- but it's funny when their fans feel the need to start beef with others over their taste in music xD when the fans are more sensitive about things like genre elements and the true definition of talent and "hardcore" than the actual supremely talented musicians!

@@hermionestranger4964 well stated 👏 Some of Ricks songs aren't lyrically complex, but the instrumenation is very technical and is respected by many musicians in all genres, not to mention his unique powerful baritone voice that very few singers can pull off. Growing up, the only few people I knew who didn't like it were often pretty dense to begin with or just had a more narrow view of music in general and stuck to one type predominantly

Lewis hall You're equating money and fame with success. Thats a mistake. He's as real as a three dollar bill. He became nothing but a rockstar. Which is what he always wanted to be.
and he does rip off songs constantly. I've been plying guitar for 30 years. Most of the Pooh Biters hits are built off of other band's songs.
Sorry to wake you but this guy is a douche bag of the highest order. He wants your money not your kinship. Try and shake his hand when he comes to your town. You'll never even get the opportunity.
I've shook hands with Derek Trucks, Warren Haynes, Marc Ford, Grace Potter, Chris Robinson, Keb Mo, BB King, John Waits, Taj Mahal, Tommy Castro, John Butler, Ozzy, Tom Morello.....even the Wutang Clan and Tool!
because they made themselves available for their fans at their shows.
I guess I'll have to win "the backstage meet and greet passes" from KROQ to add the Pooh Biters to that list. What a joke.

But even before memes were a thing, Rick Astley was actually a great singer and mainstream famous back then! So if you grew up in the late 80s-90s, you’d respect Rick.

You have to be next level hard core MF to simply get told, hey, want to do your hit, but like my old band's hit, no prep, no pressure, just a packed and howling stadium crowd and just reply, "Brilliant". There were some huge and hairy balls on that stage, not only to attempt it, but the whole band plus Rick made it look like it was supposed to be that way. Talent to back up the rep. Mad respect.

Same. 😂 I also like that he drinks a Jägerbomb, before going on stage, as shown in his Glastonbury 2023 interview.

I like how the hosts were opening him up to throw some rock star shade at the nerdy popstar...and Dave was very nicely not at all interested in going there.

There was also a Nirvana reunion a while ago at the CalJam festival. They also performed "Smells Like Teen Spirit" there, but it sounded worse than the live mashup.
They also said that more Nirvana reunions are coming in the future.
