"When you're a kid and you're stuck in your room, you'll do any old shit to get out of it" This line really brought me back. It's also a nice analogy. All of these songs have so many layers to them.
same fr i say that every time i think my singing isnt as good as i planned lmaoooo , its always "just one more take" and then you end up with 10 different recordings of the same song LOOL, i think this also happened while i was watching inside when it came out, ive always loved bo burnhams work and when i was trying to sing look whos inside again, i think i literally said "one more time" right when he did and it took me off guard LMAO
Love the metaphor Bo creates with the, "When you're a kid and you're stuck in your room" part. Specifically the line, "You'll do any old sh*t to get out of it." On the surface it's just saying that when you're sent to your room as a kid you're gonna try anything to get out of being grounded. But when you associate the metaphor of being stuck in your room being falling into a relapse or some sort of depression, you realize he's saying that when you're a kid, you're irresponsible enough to do anything to make you feel better, like drinking, or doing drugs.
I disagree with this interpretation. When Bo was 16, he started uploading videos of himself performing comedy songs in his room out of boredom, and that's how he got famous. He's saying that after 15 years, he's ended up back where he started, recording himself trying to be funny while bored inside.
i like to imagine the ending of the song is a joke the lonely person makes in their head to make them laugh. i remember when i heard the end verse i kind of smiled a little, cuz it sounds so silly… and wraps up nicely with the whole theme of trying to make yourself laugh when your alone and have nobody but yourself to try and make yourself happy.
The thing about this song is its very short and to the point but its used as a sort of motif throughout the presentation. Even when he does the streaming scene the menu is playing this song. And then it returns at the very end. The whole theme surrounds the concept that staying inside fucks up your mental health which makes you hesitant to leave your house and then that feeds into itself. You find yourself making excuses for why you cant do things because your stuck inside but your subconcious knows and shows up going "well well look whose inside again went out to look for a reason to hide again. Well well buddy you found it. Now come out with your hands we've got you surrounded" at least thats how i interpreted it.
I have a curious interpretation of this When you're a kid, your mind is completely open to possibilities because you're "still learning", and it gives off the impression you're limited by your age, unable to access a lot of places and situations And when you become an adult and "free", the moment you've been most waiting for finally arrives, and it's ridiculously disappointing You're worse stuck than before, even with the promise of the whole world in your reach Then you go back to your room, this time voluntarily, afraid of the world outside
This is the first time in the special I feel he became candid. In his previous performances he always wore a mask of himself as a character; he let it come off at the end of Make Happy, and this was the first time it slipped off again in this special.
“i was a kid who was stuck in his room, there isnt much more to say about it. when youre a kid and youre stuck in your room, youll do any old shit to get out of it. try making faces, try telling jokes, making little sounds.” this hurts more when you remember bo started his career in his room telling jokes and “making little sounds” (music) YEOUCH
I’m just some dude so tell me if I’m “getting this.” The end of the song he says “look who’s inside again, went out to look for a reason to hide again.” And then the “come up with your hands up we’ve got you surrounded.” The first few times I just listened to the song and loved the melody and just assumed he was talking about the police. That’s kinda normally in reference to the police having a suspect surrounded. Now obviously when you actually pay attention that lines doesn’t make sense to reference the police… is the “we” in the “we got you surrounded” referring to his fans watching this masterpiece of a movie and knowing they are gonna fall in love with his material and what that means for himself? Especially the clever little way he incorporates the “hands up” in the song and how he’s used that multiple times (get your fucking hands up…. Or everyone getting their hands up and showing pringles their hands). Or am I just a douche that needs to watch something else for a little while?

Those lyrics are so fucking true that song was based on me and my life changed, back in December 2021 i stopped going outside and when i was laying in bed, i never moved an inch to get out of my bed to got the toilet or never even bothered to take a shower (sometimes i do take a shower) i wss looking at a screen the whole day and laughed and laughed and laughed at every funny meme i see. Even when i wanted to go somewhere, it feels like when im trying to get out of bed something is pushing me back down to bed like if there was a ghost who was trying to put me back to my bed. Then it was, 2022, that year, i started my youtube channel and then got taken away for a reason, made my own youtube channel, barely made any views and this is me right now. And right now, i'm not the same person that i used to be. The old me had sense of humor and did a perfect impression of Morty (From Rick and Morty). If you read this whole story, it does not make sense at all and subscribe to my channel, i am struggling to make good content and it would mean the world for me if you would subscribe. Thanks for reading this.
This song, along with many other songs/bits bo has done, is so multi-layered it's ridiculous. They mean so many things. This song is both literal and deeply metaphorical. Bo was literally a kid stuck in his room and was almost forced to be creative, and he was, and it led to his success. But I think this song may also be a retelling of his contempt for that part of is life when he was a kid STUCK in his room. This may be looking in too deep, but as he recognizes and unpacks his trauma, maybe he wishes he wasn't a kid stuck in his room so he could be out having fun, living a normal life and never experiencing fame? Who knows. But also the metaphor of being stuck, whatever that may be for you, and trying to remedy it any way you know how, and when you say it out loud it always seems far fetched, because no matter how you cope with something, whether it's in the moment or after the fact, it will only make sense to you, and I think that's a beautiful thing.
I always saw the song as a murder who is stuck in his old bedroom while the cops outside are trying to compromise with to come out. While in there, he resorts back to his childhood and how he used to be stuck in his room a lot. But eventually he walks out and thats why it says, “ Now come out with your hands up we’ve got you surrounded.”

The simplicity of this song makes it so much good, just like Any Day Now
Crazy how it perfect loops
Yeah he says one more and it starts over
love how when he says "one more", it loops perfectly- it really feels like me recording something :') just one more take man just one more
he says one more because he thought it was a bad take and didn’t know that it was that take that would get into the final cut
One more time! 🦺
