    This show is not only perfect for binge watching, but there are so many small details in every episode that it's perfect for binge re-watching. And that makes it perfect for watching reactions like this.
    Captain Yao is the first of many, many characters in this show who we only see for an episode or two but the characters have enough depth to make them interesting and relatable despite the short time we spend with them.
    The story about Shed: The Expanse started out as a home made role playing game (Dungeons and Dragons in space). The person who was playing Shed couldn't play anymore so they killed off the character. Then they wrote books based on the adventures and Shed's demise is one of the events they kept for the story.

      Originally it was supposed to be an MMORPG like WoW or Guild Wars or Eve or something, then I don't know if they couldn't get money or it would have been too ambitious or something it got rescued to become a tabletop, then books, then TV. When the books and TV show are over I really hope a decent developer picks it up and runs with the MMORPG theme or frankly even a single player game like Mass Effect or something - that would be amazing. I know nothing ever succeeds when they try to do that but with the book writers involved with enough control it could be an thing..

    They don't really have "artificial gravity" per se, the gravity on ships are from the thrust the ships are under, typically around 0.3 Gs, with the ships built like office buildings, with the engines on the "bottom," with the ship accelerating "upwards." The ships flip halfway through their journeys and then decelerate by firing their engines at the same rate (0.3 Gs) with the engines pointing towards their destinations.
    When the ships are not accelerating, there is no "thrust gravity," and people use mag boots (magnetic shoes), like you saw in the scene where Holden and Naomi were running along the walkway. The red light indicated the boots were on (activated by clicking heels). (To explain why the people can walk, the magnets switch off if you lift from the heel).
    The exceptions to this are stations like Ceres, Tycho, and Eros where they spin the stations to create "spin gravity" using centrifugal force.
    The physics in this show are as real as possible (ignoring their fusion drives).
    Edit: spacing

    Something I've noticed on just a recent rewatch is the look of dismay on the Donnager's weapons officer's face as she watched Captain Theresa Yao hand that memory chip to Lt Lopez. She realized in that moment what Yao had decided to do.
    Something else I recently noted was that the "space-Tinder" entry for the data broker had the tag line "Let me be your sherpa." I realize now that was a code phrase, considering what sherpas do.
    This series excels in giving us small-role characters that stun us with brilliant acting in such small roles. Most series reserve good drama for the series regulars, but The Expanse often makes a one-episode character the Most Valuable Player of that episode, and they cast actors who are ready to eat it alive.
    I may have mentioned earlier that this show was originally a role-playing game. In the original game, the person playing Shed abandoned the game early, so they killed off Shed. That event stuck through the novel series and now the television series.
    Alex is a man of no subtext. He absolutely means what he says.

    The 'self-destruct' wasn't explosives like it is in Star Trek or other shows. This one basically just shuts down containment of the magnetic bottle in the fusion drive which activates an un-moderated nuclear event. Pretty neat way to go out, instantly with no suffering, and with a large area of effect, essentially killing your attackers too.

    • @ahybridbassist
      @ahybridbassist 4 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      @L. Kärkkäinen In the books, at least, there's frequent mention of ships "dumping core" whenever magnetic containment is failing because of a shot-I don't think they ever mention that in the show but I assume that's why most ships don't go out in so dramatic a fashion.

    I love the Expanse so much, such an amazing story and it doesn’t rely on anything like hyperspace, gravity generators, or any seemingly magic tech, almost everything is at least plausible and could exist in a far future
    Also the reason there aren’t really escape pods is the same reason they don’t have fighters and all warships are rather large, the weapons in the show would easily catch up to and destroy something so small and with little to no defenses

      Also even today there are developing countries where the average life expectancy is only around mid-fifties, whereas throughout the western world people live on average to be over 80 years old. A drastic difference in overall living conditions and welfare has an impact and does make a big difference in the average life expectancy.

    I was gonna do something when I saw the notification "Imma watch it later" then I realized it was 1x04 "Nope, I've to watch it now I want to see her face when Shed gets his head blown off". I was not disappointed :D
    It's nice to watch you put the pieces together little by little. "This show keeps betting better episode by episode", sweet summer child, you have no idea :D
    Also: how's Havelock not dead? You'd be surprised what people can actually survive. Some people survived spikes through their skull with little to no repercussion. Through the SKULL! It depends if the foreign object hits a vital center or not. As long as you don't pull the object out you have a chance, if you pull it out chances are you are gonna bleed out before you die of any damage it did. If it doesn't hit anything vital like the hearth, you likely still have a chance if you get proper medical attention in time. Havelock got very lucky.

  • @LeeCarlson
    @LeeCarlson 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    The series does continue to get better and better as it progresses. The average length of life of the Belters is due to the fact that they live in an environment that is intrinsically inimical to life (microgravity, vacuum, radiation, etc.) which kills anyone that doesn't pay constant attention (remember the guy who lost his arm in Episode One?). We get to see microgravity playing out aboard the Donnager when the drives go down. And Shad was the unfortunate victim of a railgun round that went completely through the Donnager and left it venting to space.

    "Censored"? Even SyFy didn't hide Shed's decapitation, and they practically bleached every instance of profanity out of the dialogue.
    Well, it's your channel. ...Onward.
    How is Havelock alive? Life transplant. Shed wasn't using his anymore, so they figured, waste not, want not. Actually, it's been pointed out to me that people in the real world have had impalements as severe or more and lived. Combination of factors like cold, low gravity, and having managed to dislodge that pin from the wall so his weight wouldn't stop him breathing. Plus the possibility in the context of the show that he may have had some enhancing biotech implanted before going to be a cop in the most dangerous post in the system. It's never really explained in the show, although maybe it is in the books.
    Havelock was impaled on a piece of rebar shot from a gas-driven construction tool, basically a nailgun in macro. Shed's melon was popped by a tungsten rod fired magnetically from a railgun at 10x the speed of sound, that tore a hole all the way through the Donnager in the time it took to produce that metal-stamping clang. Expanse weapons aren't warm and fuzzy like they are in other SF TV shows.
    Amos gets shot in the shin and still picks Alex up despite that and carries him the rest of the way across the gantry. Holden and Naomi perform zero-G ballet in a hail of gunfire without getting shot even once, proving that, for all their high-tech gear, the mystery assault team are amateurs just spraying and praying, not professional soldiers.
    Lt. Lopez (creepy Martian guy) authorizes full control of the Tachi to Holden and crew. Don't ever let it be said Martians can't be generous when it suits them to be.

    • @CarmenYoung
      @CarmenYoung  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      To explain why I chose to censor it...the thing is that TH-cam won't de-monetize a video if I say fuck in the middle of it, but they will for graphic violence/images like that. They don't always, but they are very unclear (and iffy) about when they do. So, I'm just trying to stay on the good side of TH-cam. I also didn't feel it was necessary to include the whole graphic scene. I had to watch it a bunch of times while editing and wanted to spare people having to see it again. We all know what is (and isn't!) under the censor anyway lol
      It does make sense that Havelock is alive, just surprising in the moment. While it is plausible one can survive that injury even in our world, it's not probable. He got lucky with the location of the hit. Definitely wasn't expecting it, but I'm very glad it happened like that!

    Just for some perspective, Earth in this story has 30 billion people on it and because most things are automated, there are few jobs available. Most people live off of something called "Basic." It gives simple shelter, basic clothes, meds and food but not much else. A license is required to have children and if you earn money, Basic is taken from you. People are of course born without permission from the government, so their lives are much, much worse. Earth is kind of a craphole to live on. All the little things in the expanse are what make it the best.
    "It would've been nice to see an ocean on mars," rest in peace Lt. Lopez.
    We meet the martians, but they're just humans full of suppositions like today humans, driven though they are. And we see them genuinely rattled and then broken by the stealth ships (it was 6 against 1). I'd also say that whoever built the ships seems pretty ruthless
    We meet Fred Johnson here, as played by Chad L. Coleman, aka Tyrese, aka Cutty (The Wire), i always call him Cutty.
    Did you notice that they passed out at the end of the episode. The Tachi (not so little a shuttle) 'max' burned away from the Donnager before it blew, the Gs of that burned caused holden to pass out, more of the dangers of space travel.

      I honestly would have liked Lt. Lopez to see the ocean on Mars too! They made me feel for him in the end. Whoever is doing all of this is definitely ruthless and I am endlessly intrigued to find out what they want and what their motives and end goal are?
      Even though I know his name on this now I still wanna call him Tyrese, so I understand lol
      I did notice. Space is not a fairy tale. Danger, Will Robinson, indeed!

    That's where the research station was located. You can read up on what we know about Phoebe, today, without messing up the story, in any way -- but it does help explain some of the things said in later episodes.

    It's Low-G (or low gravity) as opposed to 'Artificial Gravity' ( I mean it is artificial, but more accurately the condition is low gravity, whether its man-made or natural), and it doesn't necessarily cause Belters to have ailments or lower life expectancy.
    Living in a low-G environment causes the body to lose body mass (specifically, bone-density and muscle mass) - mostly because you don't need all that mass if it's not resisting the gravitational well of a planet (like Earth or Mars) and carrying all that extra mass becomes hard for the heart to supply oxygen for in conditions that are also low atmospheric pressure with probably low(er) oxygen levels. So the body naturally sheds a lot of the mass it doesn't need, which is more of an adaptation rather than an ailment, because we've seen it happen with astronauts here in our time, who spend long periods in the International Space Station. Unfortunately that adaptation also happens to make it harder for them to live in a full 1g environment as the gravity literally crushes them and it's like torture for them (like you saw in episode 1 or 2) and this is why astronauts on the ISS are required to exercise frequently (at least 2 hours a day) while up there to help prevent their bodies from losing all that mass.
    And by the way, the heart,... that's an organ that's ALL muscle, and like all other muscles in the body, it also sheds mass in low-g environment which means a weaker heart when you return to full gravity.
    It's also a reason why we're likely to never travel outside the Solar System as a species on long interstellar trips, unless we solve the gravity problem (by creating proper artificial gravity of 1g or close to 1g) for the ships we'll use, since our bodies never evolved to survive long trips (even in cryo-sleep) of several years in Low-G* environments.
    (You'll often hear people saying "Zero-G" ,...or "zero-gravity" instead of "Low-G" but strictly speaking there's no such thing as a 'Zero-G' environment because you're always subject to the gravitational pull of something wherever you are anywhere in the universe - even millions of light years from the nearest star or planet. It just happens to be so minimal at that range that it might as well be "zero" (but it isn't))
    P.S. while it might be possible that living your entire life in a Low-G environment could potentially affect one's life expectancy and lead to people having lower life-spans (potentially because of the effects that a weaker heart have on the body's functions), it's likely not the real reason why Belters have lower life-expectancy or why conversely Earthers and Martians have longer life expectancy (even longer than we have now).
    More than likely the reason (on the Martian and Earther side) for the longer life expectancy is more improved medical science and healthcare technology and better understanding of human physiology. Here and now, we've practically doubled human life expectancy in the most developed nations from just 300 years ago just based off of better and more advanced geriatric healthcare systems and medical technology. You could extrapolate that even further to 300 years from now (which is roughly when the show takes place) and which is likely what the writers did.
    Also Belters are generally poorer and have less advanced and less robust healthcare system so it's not surprising that they'd have shorter life expectancies much like third world countries in the here and now also have lower life expetancy than developed countries.

      To explain the censor: TH-cam won't de-monetize a video if I say fuck in the middle of it, but they will for graphic violence/images like that. They don't always, but they are very unclear (and iffy) about when they do. So, I'm just trying to stay on the good side of TH-cam. I also didn't feel it was necessary to include the whole graphic scene. I had to watch it a bunch of times while editing and wanted to spare people having to see it again. It's lower gravity, most places are about 1/3 Earth gravity, the asteroids were spun to create it and Mars is naturally 1/3 G. When in a ship, most travel at only enough acceleration/deceleration to make 1/3, but military vessels like to go 1G constant to train like Earth and can go even faster when trying to get somewhere fast but it takes a toll on the crew, so they are all usually on specific drugs to help then with extreme G (Alex talking about "the juice") and strapped in the limit the impact on their bodies.

    12:12 There is no "artificial" gravity in The Expanse, not like Star Trek, It is natural zero-g/low-g or artificially rotate the object so natural centripedal force creates "spin" gravity. Also long-term space missions IRL show that even 3 months in space with zero-G/low-G BAD STUFF HAPPENS. Extend that to future generations before evolution might kick in. Even Mars would have this problem, BUT their tech is supposedly that good to counteract.
    19:20 Good shot! Below the rib cage and maybe missed the spine. They likely used the ribcage and the bolt to keep him hanging (till the bolt popped off?). Also see above, (low gravity), less strain on Earther muscles till the bad stuff kicks in.
