  • Stacy's space was cluttered and overwhelming. I helped Stacy declutter, zone and organize her space through our virtual coaching sessions by breaking the steps down into bite-sized pieces for her. After each meeting, I gave Stacy decluttering, zoning and organizing homework to complete before our next meeting. Watch as she transformed her craft room, and her confidence!
If you want to learn how to declutter and organize, or how to help people like I helped Stacy, check out my "How To Be An Organizing Expert" course here: course.clutter.... Use Coupon Code: BlackFriday2021

I am a retired teacher and it has taken me 3 years to finally get rid of 30 years worth of stuff. I did try to keep most of my stuff at school while I was teaching! I had to bring it ALL home 3 years ago when I retired OMG! I joined Take Your House Back when I discovered You Tube and that really was a life saver.

@Cynthia Cousy: YES! I retired as of January 2020 and then came Covid and lockdown. I brought home everything I had purchased as a middle school art and reading teacher. (Furniture, lamps, books, art supplies, tools, and more) Since then It has festered in my entryway and spare bedroom, and I swear it has spawned. I have been a guilt ridden butterfly who became unable to even begin sorting/culling/tossing/donating/keeping. It is still here at the end of 2021. I guess I will have to check out Take Your House [and Life] Back. If you could do it, maybe I can, too.

Same here-after 40 years of teaching many, many different college English courses, my school closed b/c of financial reasons, causing me to have to bring my stuff home. Then, a few months later, I was rehired by the state school which bought our campus. So I moved back into an office on campus. Hated it! Absolutely hated it! So after one semester, I retired & moved home AGAIN. Lordy! I have gotten rid of tons of school stuff, though it broke my heart, but I still have “miles to go before I sleep.” Teachers just keep so much b/c we NEED it!

Thank you Cynthia, Mildred and Vivian, for sharing your comments! I have really felt broken, worthless, guilty, etc, because it is taking me SO LONG to deal with all my teacher stuff. Some days I get started, but it feels like it just gets more and more daunting. Thank goodness I can shut the door on the room containing most of it. But I would very much like to have the [mostly mental] energy to accomplish this, and oh, to have an attractive, organized, functional and easily accessible home for the things I want to keep. And I want to pass some of the good supplies and books on to someone who needs them.
      The struggle is real…👩🏻‍🎨👍🙏❤️

@@Lashlove16 I feel a need to respond to this as a disabled person who subs in adaptive education--any time someone hears I work with children with disabilities and says "oh, you're so [amazing/blessed/brave]" it always makes me feel weird, because I can't always tell if that's something they'd say to all educators (fine, good even) or if they're saying it to me because they interpret the students I work with as difficult or worse or undesirable or something (makes me feel especially weird and bad because then I wonder if their opinion of me would instantly change if I said something that would cause them to mentally group me in the same "box" as the students I work with).
Like, genuine compliments you'd be comfortable giving to any educator are fine but so often it's the latter "savior" narrative. :-/

@@citrusella-nomorecraptions I've heard this as a pretty common thing with disability in general. Like "you're so inspiring!" sounds like a compliment, but it comes across as kind of insulting/patronizing because it implies that someone's mere existence is an inspiration and that's kinda weird

I’m sorry to tell you that I was happy to be done homeschooling. My kids have all graduated from college (2 of them have master’s degrees), which was very rewarding for me. Being done freed up some time for fun things (crafts for me) & opportunity to earn a little extra income outside of our home. My kids are all married & live across the country, which is hard at times, but I’m very thankful for the modern technology that allows us to keep up with each other & the grandkids!

I was SO excited to see you doing a craft room that started out looking like mine, and she seemed to be interested in some of the crafts I am too. It just so happened that I spent this weekend finding my desktop, too! So, when you said you just had to give her the steps to carry on....and then you left the steps out and went to "the AFTER" I was heartbroken! I love you - but I want those steps!

    • @gingersprecher3908

The steps are to zone, declutter, then organize. After you zone, you work on one zone at a time to finish the room. The first zone was her desktop, then she moved to another zone and decluttered and organized it. You will probably find things that belong in a zone you already “finished” but that’s ok because you can fit it in easier. Once all the zones are done, you finish up the little details in the entire room and “make it pretty.”

I think we need to hear there are boundaries, I learned that from you, that made the difference for me. I had to give myself boundary for my stuff. For example, I can not leave my stuff in the hallway. I said to myself, if there is an emergency, we must be able to get out the house quickly and savely. If there is stuff on the ground we could fall. From that day on i kept my hallway clear and I still look at my other rooms if I can give myself more boundaries (there is always room for improvement). But the funniest thing, the more boundaries I give myself for my stuff, the more freedom I get, it's really true!

First off, Cas! You are rocking that comfy cozy vibe with your sweater! Secondly...as a former teacher with a cricket organizing style, this breakdown really hit home! I've successfully adopted Dana's rule of keeping only what I have room for in my crafting space. If it doesn't fit in my large "crafting closet" I have to let go of some stuff. I'm feeling the need to let go of some of my micro organizing ways and go macro now. Thank you for letting us crickets know that sometimes it's ok to step off the ledge and try a different way of organizing.

The other teacher you mentioned at the end, if she didn’t offer you more money for the time you had to spend at her home, that speaks volumes to the type of person she is. I haven't organized them because micro categories are NOT me but they are *supposed* to be organized by what they cover and in order, etc... too big a project, so they are just everywhere... and since I'm a visual organizer, I often forget about the resources I have because I can't see them to remember them :/ I need to let go of the *supposed to* and do something!

I had to giggle when you told her to clean off her desk for "a win"...as I was cleaning off my desk lol. I always start at my desk and then go from there, because I spend the majority of my time at the desk if it's under control I'm more productive getting to the rest of it. I live by the mantra - a cluttered space = a cluttered mind, a cluttered mind = chaos. I'm a list maker (or I'll forget to do something), so I keep a permanent running list of what each room needs done (bathroom - sink, tub, mirror, etc.) and if I find something that goes in another room it gets put in that room to be dealt with AFTER I get the room I'm working in gets finished, or nothing would ever get completely finish because I'd be picking at bits of each room. I love how the transformation of her craft room just seemed to lift a weight and add a brightness to this lovely lady, well done. And bless you for giving her guidance in a way that worked for her to manage each step along the way.

I am a cricket, but with 5 kids have learned to be more ladybug and use BIG categories. Still no luck with paperwork. I was watching this video and the 💡 moment came when you said to zone 1st. It dawned on me I always thought I HAD zoned already because my papers were only in one place. I realized I had to zone each paper into a big category 1st, then I could declutter. Duh. I was trying to declutter as I went through the stack, which is okay for obvious trash, but then I was overwhelmed because I couldn't make decisions fast 'cuz there were no smaller categories. Your system works perfectly. Thanks for sharing.

This was a great video for me! I am a retired Inclusion Pre-K teacher. I loved my stuff as well. I don’t need most of it now so I am slowly letting go. My crafts supplies still haunt me. You commented several weeks ago about donating supplies to nursing homes and still gathering them with this idea in mind. My other indulgence is Christmas but this year I plan to see what I am actually using and getting rid of the rest. Thanks for sharing the videos.

I am a teacher and I teach with minimal supplies. Another teacher saw my hoarded stash once, and told me to get rid of it all! She was right! Now, she and I have the fewest items in our rooms, much to the envy of the other teachers. 😄

So, I too am a "cricket teacher," and while I always appreciate your stories at the end of your videos, this one hit home for me. Cas, it has been a breakthrough for me to follow your advice to start with macro organization and know that "you can always go back and make it perfect later" (which I often find I'm content and don't need to!). I'm in Take Your House Back and your paper system has changed everything for me!! ❤️ Thank you for sharing the lessons you've learned!

Exactly why I could not get organized as when you see the perfect organization that no one can live in. It makes it hard. I think we need to realize that those are styled to look amazing and those ppl probably have a lot of help maintaining it daily

Thank you. I appreciate your wisdom and advice. Your tips on how to get control of clutter have helped reduce my anxiety and made me love my space. I have donated items that I wasn't enjoying or were serving no purpose. I am finding a home for the important things in my life and I am more calm and relaxed in my home. I'm not where I want to be with clutter control and organization but I know I will get there if I follow your helpful advice. Thank you.

The transformation is amazing! And haha yes teachers can be very specific but we also definitely each have unique styles. For me I am a ladybug but I teach kindergarten with other staff so my struggle is trying to find the balance of organizing for kids who are butterflies and all the different staff who have different styles in my room 😅🤪 but I am slowly learning and getting there ❤️
