Yeah, I could tell right away that he just needed a spot to do his work in, rather than getting rid of it all. I was shocked when she said to get rid of it and was relieved to see her change her mind and create a space for him.

Awesome job encouraging them to declutter and organize their garage. I picked up ideas from your help to them to work on my garage, which is an oversized 2 car garage and only vehicle parked in it is a motorcycle. See, Cas; I said 1/2 mine and 1/2 yours to my husband. He houses tools and 2nd fridge and small chest freezer while I store holiday and umm clutter lol on my side. Now in fairness to me I have decluttered tons, emptied a 10x20 rented storage building of 5 yrs, and a lot of our house, given all our kids their items (2 now rent their own shared 10x10 shed😉) and started to categorize the rest. I then started my TH-cam addiction with you, dawn and Dana. Now I’m glad I found all 3 of you and I have learned a lot, so now I need to do decluttering again and then I know we will have a car and the motorcycle in the garage along with the organized items, labeled in bins that are deemed worthy of the storage shelf space we have on the side of the garage! I am shooting for fall completion or before then would be awesome! Thank you, Thank you, Thank you!!! You are the greatest motivator and I love your sense of humor, I laugh out loud a lot when watching your TH-cam and shows🥰love and prayers to you and your beautiful family too!

I’d love to see another video like this with more details about the steps involved. I want my basement (former family room) back. It is a REAL dump. I’d also like to know what do you do when your husband isn’t on board with decluttering and most of the stuff is his.

    • @MissVasques
      @MissVasques 3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

I’d go with Kondo, declutter what you can and perhaps it’ll inspire. Plus pushing someone to let go will just make them hold on tighter. Or you could ask If a certain thing would be ok, less pressure.
Last resort If your husband is leaning towards hoarding: rent a storage and let that his space for his stuff.
Some ppl see no reason to declutter If it fits.
Like my dad, we moved together and I was all about not dragging things along I really didn’t Need or want. I was so excited for him to go through and get rid of decades of things from when he lived in a house, when We were kids etc.
He’s been living in apartments since 10 years.
But Nope, he just chickened out because he imagined getting it all to the ”dump” and being ordered to sort it and he just didn’t want to ”waste” the time.
The cellar storage in his new place was Way smaller But everything could be Shoved in including 1-3 boxes in closets in the apartment….
      So why declutter?
He is a stubborn man. Ofc he had years with mum Before their divorce and mum let go Easy so I guess nowadays when it is all his choice he diggs his heels in.

It has always seemed overwhelming because we couldn't figure out what to do about our differing styles or how to make the space work for us. Thank you for this treasure trove of ideas. A daunting prospect for an introvert! (I must remember to wear a smile when i go out to the letterbox.) Perhaps if you did the same, it could lead to a great neighbourly friendship, and the opportunity for you to offer to help. So kind of you to want to help others.😊

The woman I clean for is starting to let me help her declutter and I did an initial organizing of her garage where I put everything in their zones we didn’t even really start decluttering we just really needed to assess the situation (you couldn’t walk through it, let alone park). It took me three hours and she was amazed I got that much done in that time. Sometimes we honestly just need the push. It can feel bigger than it is because of how long we’ve put it off

    EXACTLY WHAT I NEEDED!
We are about to rebuild a derelict garage and I've been putting off designing it because it needs to be multipurpose, suit a ladybug/cricket couple and grow with our family which isn't finished. My brain! Annnywaaayy, Connie's fighting for Tyler's space email I needed to hear. I've been compulsively decluttering the house and labelling boxes etc. (I'm obsessed with Dana k white, the minimal mom and you) and he's graciously gone along with my compulsive sorting. My turn to let him own a space-like Tyler he works super hard for our family and he needs his tinker spot! Thanks Cas for sharing this, I'm super inspired :)

Most of us are too impatient and want it 'done' straight away. What I've learned to do is accept it will take far longer and there will be a mess for a while, not to let it take over your time but don't give up because even 20minutes clearing better than nothing and there will be an end to it

I’ve been pushing my dad to declutter his garage… he’s been stuck in a rut for so long. I think what I just saw from this video is that he’s really a visual organizer and he also needs to be able to put things away fast. So he’s been stuck in a rut because he doesn’t have a system like a peg board!
The rest of the family are bees and so the two have conflicted for a long time and things just end up in piles.
I’ve been working for a while now to macro sort and declutter with my dad in his garage but now I know after we get done macro sorting what we need to do for him… peg boards and open shelves!
Oh thank you so so so much!!!

Hi Cas!! I struggle to determine which bug I am … mainly because my lifestyle requires me to clean and tidy quickly. So when you asked “is it more important to put things away fast or find it fast?” it really struck me. I need to put things away fast, but it is more important to me to be able to find things fast. When I have to look through stuff to find what I am looking for (usually paper), it really stresses me out. Could you please elaborate on the difference? I also am an out of sight out of mind person, but I don’t need to see everything, just stuff I need to remember or things I enjoy looking at. The rest I prefer be put away so i’m not looking at it all the time.

When I go down there it is so discouraging. I just have my path as the homeowner said and I just go get what I need and hurry out of there. I am going to try to 1) declutter and 2) zone the areas like you suggested. The homeowner said it wasn't that long to accomplish smaller tasks so I am hoping that's what I will feel like. Fingers crossed...OMG now that I said it I will have to do it. This is very scary!!

Best thing I ever did in the garage was buy a big tool chest with a workbench top. I got all my tools out of three cluttered tool boxes and organized into the pull out drawers. I then built a workbench from some plans I found online at the same height with storage underneath for some of my bigger items like saws. It makes doing things so much easier knowing where everything is and not having to hunt around for stuff.

I am so impressed with the garage make over. I don’t have a garage, but I do have a sewing area and lots of fabric… all scraps from quilt making. I keep rearranging it to make my space neat and tidy. I’ve purged, put the fabric in cubes, everything looks so good. You might say, what’s the problem? Well I thought I was a ladybug, so everything is hidden. Without seeing stuff, I have no desire to sew anything. I bought an L shaped desk, with the sewing machine on one side and my computer and desk things on the other. I have no desire to sit there. Before, I would start my day there as soon as I got up, and spend hours doing things. Creating and making things, doing watercolor painting.
Maybe I’m not a ladybug after all. Maybe, maybe, ……., maybe I’m just in need of a break from too much of everything. The shut down forced me to slow down and learn to relax, …… yes, that’s it, I learned to relax, it’s a novelty…… is there a critter for that?

Oh we have a garage that is probably 10 times worse! Inspiration to get it cleaned out!! Loved Hot Mess House- it’s recorded of course 😉

I’ve been meaning to organize my garage. There’s great inspiration here, Cass! Congrats to the homeowners.

This is such great motivation for me because my garage is truly the dumping ground. I only have one car to park so its easy to make it messy. I have a friend coming over this weekend and she is going to help and I'm going to help her work on her garage!

I moved 8 months ago and still have a room with unpacked boxes, home decor, tools, photos (which need to be hung) plus odd bits of stuff. I will try this approach on that room over the next couple of weeks to see if I can finally get it done! You give me hope!! ☺️☺️

Perfect timing! I'm moving in 4 wks & need to declutter (purge to highest order!) my crammed garage. Dreading it! But I know where to start now. Chuck rubbish & junk. Purge unwanted items. Macro sort & pack the keepers. Simple. Okay, first job tomorrow - grab a garbage bag & head to the garage. Wish me luck!!! (Omg, wth am I getting teary?!)

For some reason your Hot Mess House didn't start here in my area of AZ, till today. This morning I watched what might have been last weeks show, not sure. Another one is set up to record tonight. I just want to say, I was so impressed with the basement and bedroom areas you did, but mainly the people's basements. I can't even imagine having to tackle those projects. I admire you for being persistent but caring with customers who want the change but are so emotionally attached that they have a hard time letting go. It's great when they finally can see and get on board with how you are helping them. You truly help them get their lives back. Great job!

Just watched your new show (with Amanda and Steph). You made the comment about “some people look at this in the what if I need it” so they keep it. This is SO me!
