How to Declutter Like a Pro

  • Decluttering is something that we often overthink, overanalyze and overcomplicate! It doesn't have to be hard or time consuming. Grab a box and a trash bag and just start. Pick a drawer, closet, cabinet or pile and pull something out. Do you like this? Would you buy this again? If the answer is no, it's got to go!
Hot Mess House airs in the US on Thursday, June 17th at 8:00pm ET on HGTV. Don't miss this season premiere, it's so inspiring!

I love that you tell people to get stuff that doesn't fit out of the closet, but that it doesn't have to be donated. For some of us, it's actually very practical to keep different sizes of clothing, and we are able to do it without shame and judgement. I like having pieces that I like available no matter what size I am without having to shop. Well worth the space of a bin put out of the way for me.

Your tips are great! I am decluttering at the moment and will definitely use them.
My favourite question so far, based on the "silent to-do list" Dawn mentioned, is, "Do I want/need to spend time organizing this item ever again?" When you make the silent to-do list loud and imagine that every item is talking to you and giving you orders like "Clean me, Dust me, Eat me, Use me, Read me, Repair me!" etc. you see why you are overwhelmed. And you will answer "NO!" most of the time. :)

Did organize what was left in a few minutes, but will save cleaning the shelving until I finish decluttering some other areas where I think I will have many donations to box before I get to the donation center next Tuesday. I was thinking the same thing. When I am in my worst flare-up (with chronic pain and chronic fatigue syndrome) I realise that I need to have systems and patterns already set up in my house to allow me to do what is needed then rest. When the flare-up is settling down there is so much to do to catch up with the simple things that I don't really get to enjoy the feeling of less pain/tiredness. I am overwhelmed with what I need to do. I'm starting with Decluttering before I try to do any real organising.
I know the only way is one item at a time.
I wish you good luck on your journey towards a house you enjoy and can rest and relax in. Blessings, Dot

I am happy you were chosen to host a show, please don’t let HGTV change our Cass.🥰
I stopped wstching HGTV several years ago after several lawsuits were filed against them for doing shabby jobs on “ remodeled” homes. And so much is faked. What your known for is really helping people, no faking Cass👍🏻🥰

Especially the part about how you were afraid the coaster wasn't safe, lol Thanks for helping people toss the clutter that is stressing them out. There is enough stress already.

I had heard that if you turn all of your hangers backwards and turn them back after you have worn an item that after a couple of months anything that hasn’t been turned around you haven’t worn and can comfortably donate. I thought it was a great tip.

So grateful for your videos, but in particular this one. I was struggling with my clothes, for the past 2 days, which is the only area that needs downsizing in my home. I also have a huge storage unit with 3 clothing racks full of clothes, many that don't fit me, because of my pandemic weight gain. I used to model and do commercial photo shoots and the clothes I modeled were part of the perks, so I have hundreds of items that I am having to let go. Playing this video in the background in a loop has helped me in my weakest moments.
From my home I filled 4 contractor bags full of clothes to be donated. This weekend I move onto books, I plan to donate 90% of them because I'm tired of dusting them weekly. I have a kindle with many of these books accessible to me. Tuesday I tackle the storage unit with my racks. I have momentum and already feel lighter! Again, THANK YOU for helping me liberate myself from the heap of clothes I was trapped under!

Wow, I knew there was a psychological side to decluttering. She talks like a psychologist. I have been searching for months for the one that would click for me and it is this amazing person. When she said that taking an item out of the pile and after taking the not needed stuff you would see it in a different light, that did it for me along with not overthinking and only touching it once. I do struggle with what to let go, it is not that simple. Thank you 🙏 for helping me figure out decluttering, this made me feel empowered 😌

I needed this today! I have been working 50 hrs a week for 2 months & my home is a disaster. After watching a few of your videos this morning - which inspired me to get a few things done (which I needed) - I was distracted all morning by wanting to switch the stuff in my entry way closet with the stuff in my office closet. (A few years ago I moved all of my coats & seasonal gear from the entry way to the office & set up the entry way as a utility closet.) But after watching this video I realized that I need to do a lot of decluttering before I do anything. This saved me a lot of time since I frequently rearrange things just to put it all back again later. So now I am focusing on "good enough" which is working well. Thank you for sharing!

Get them involved. Don't just do it yourself. Otherwise they won't appreciate the work involved. My kids are adults now but when the were little, I always involved them in decluttering their toys. If they weren't ready to let go of something, we put it aside in a separate box to tackle later on down the road.

I used to have such a struggle because it is hard to do bigger projects being chronically ill. So instead I say if I can’t do a declutter I do one thing a day. From a fellow Spoonie, I've totally found it much easier to do a little a day. Projects go slower, yes, but they also feel less stressful -- at least less stressful than when I tried Do All The Things and had no energy to do so, so I would burn out and spiral into sadness/despair over it all. So, yeah, small steps has been a life saver!
