Landcruiser A/C Belt drive issue/fix (Throwing A/C belt)

  • Hey, guys and gals!
I was having an issue with my 1997 Toyota Landcruiser 80 series with the 1hz engine. Any time the engine would rev over about 1500rpm the Airconditioning drive belt would spin and flick off the drive pulley. After checking the alignment of the pulleys, tensioner pulley and A/C compressor pulleys I found no issues at all. The drive belt tension was good and everything was in good working order and properly aligned.
The final piece to the puzzle is the Crank A/C drive/balancer pulley. After using a mirror to inspect the balancer pulley I found multiple large cracks/splits in the rubber coupling.
I removed all the belts and removed the front part of the 2 piece crank harmonic balancer for the A/C drive. After a proper look, there was definitely some good cracks and separation of the rubber from the pulley. I think that under higher RPM the age and cracks through the rubber coupling of the pulley were causing it to spin incorrectly/vibrate and would cause the A/C drive belt to spin and jump off the pulley.
I replaced the Airconditioning drive pulley/balancer off the crank and reassembled with a new genuine belt. After 500km of testing the belt has not come off again.
If you are experiencing troubles with your drive belts jumping off pulleys I would recommend checking everything listed above.
Hope this may help some people!
    Cheers, Nicko!

Mate thanks for that great video I have had so much drama with exactly that I don’t how many
Belts I’ve replaced. And right now just spent. More money on all new genuine parts to have the belt
Rolling off again. Cheers thanks for sharing this info

My cruiser kept throwing the AC belt. Found out from a pro that the condensor was inefficient because it builds up with sludge and causes the compressor to temporarily seize. You can add a water mister or replace the condensor. After putting on a new compressor and condensor i have never had the trouble again. If the ac gasses dont cool enough they dont compress very well.

Hi Nicko, thanks for the great vid mate. My 1HZ belts were squeaking a little so I replaced them and kept the olds as spares. Still a slight squeak but much better...after a minute of warm up she's quiet...and in general the running belts are WAY quieter with new ones fitted. The A/C pully tensioner had a very very slight wobble so I thought I'd replace the bearing. Toyota make them so you can't take the bearing out but as usual we find a way, as have many other blokes who've done the same thing. After removing the bearing (standard 6301) I replaced it with a new one, and exactly the same wobble is there. Bought another bearing of a different make but same spec, installed, exactly the same?? So, my question really is this: does your A/C pully tensioner also wobble very very slightly or is it absolutely spinning perfectly straight? I'll post 2 videos and link them in the comments here when I'm done so you can check them out, I'd appreciate it! Cheers from South Africa.

Hey Steven, even after replacing all of the pulleys in the a/c drive the top tensioner pulley still has a slight wobble. It hasnt thrown the belt though since replacing the crank a/c pulley. The wobble in the tensioner pulley is still there even with the genuine pulley. Hope that helps, Cheers. Nick :D

Mate what’s the torque setting for the ac idler pulley?

Hi Nick, the rubber in mine gave out and I found the pulley outer sitting on the bash plate. Could have been a lot worse I suppose. I'm wondering if you know torque spec for the a/c pulley bolts please? Cheers, eo

Did your knocksensor ( engine warning light ) also came on ? Mine's doing that and i am thinking it might be the AC, like clutch bearing or something giving little rumble to the engine.

    • @howtonick2803
      @howtonick2803  5 ปีที่แล้ว

No it didn't come on. Usually the knock sensor picks up misfires or irratic engine running.

same for me Sam, I have replaced the idler pulley twice, replaced the harmonic balancer pulley with a genuine one, and run 3 different brands of belt. some come off altogether, others flip upside down. Did you find out what was causing yours in the end? How much tension do you run on the belt?
      Cheers

@@boostedvan if crank endfloat is excessive could be making the belt flip even with a new pulley

@@iammisha1234 definitely no end float, I checked that too. Cheers
