While not the same as something main stage, I believe there is some weight to them. For some communities, these side tournaments are their biggest event they will have all year, and they will pull in everyone from different regions to show up and play. Uplifting these grassroot efforts and accomplishments is the true spirit of the FGC.
Kind of a hard question. I get your points on CEO and EVO should be counting but it depends on who shows up. If 15 people only showed up to CVS 2 and they were all new players who never touched the game before at the EVO side tournament would you crown them as a EVO champion afterwards?
Get what you mean, but it typically doesn't work like that at all. We know the legends show up for things like EVO. Now when you get to the smaller tourneys like a texas showdown, etc then you might have to take that more into account. But so many things aren't concrete in the fgc with how things are looked at.

Just thought to bring it up since the general question was "Do FGC Side tournaments matter?" and not specifically "Do EVO Side Tournaments matter?" alongside using evo in your video as an example. It is an interesting topic I will say since for our scene (I'm considered the head TO for GGST) we're doing Braacket and creating a PR since we have so many events going on. In that we're having to consider which events count and shouldn't since some GGST brackets aren't equal to others. I hope EVO/CEO starts to put more emphasis on these side brackets in the future to help bring them up more. I wouldn't mind if something like EVO7 turned into a Side Tournament highlight stream showcasing some good matches from that area.
Yes, they count. Just because not as many join or top players who once dominated a game aren't in the tournament doesn't mean that EVO doesn't bring out the best who play the game. Itazan signed up for VF5US for instance. He is dominant in that game and he might take it over the other 20+ competition, but those guys eat, drink, and sleep that game so he's still going to get a run for his money. All it means is everyone who joined is dominant, less scrubs to go though and you still get an EVO medal/cash at the end.
This is how I feel. The people who are coming to play CVS2 are the best in the world that still play it, and they see it as their world title. Same as like a world tour. You win won event and you are in, then the finals is only like 8-15 people. It definitely should count.
The craziest thing is going to be if sonicfox passes jwong for evo wins, people are going to say he’s not the fgc goat because he doesn’t have a sf win. but should that really even matter with how dominant he’s been?

Side tournaments definitely don’t count. The competition is not as fierce and there’s not as many competitors as the main games so it’s not fair to hold up a evo title to the same level as a side tournament. Also evo dosent classify side tournament winners as evo champs, so the rest of the community dosent either.
