Want to be mentally tough? I take my wife on the cart for 9 holes and she tells me exactly what I’m doing wrong. She will be texting and not even paying attention and will know if I hit a good shot by the sound of the ball. Crazy but it helps my mental game. Keep up the great videos and podcasts!
Probably the best advice I’ve heard since playing golf, I now have a pre shot routine for Driver and irons, no longer using negative thoughts or talks, next step is a putting pre shot routine
Great advice, i play now by staying relaxed with no expectations but I give 100% to each shot play it and as Parraig Harrington says make the decision and accept the result. Stay in the moment and forget the bad holes or shots move on and most importantly be patient. I’m a senior but got my handicap down from 22 to 15.
@@wickedsmartgolf so far having an attitude of gratitude. I have gotten in the rut that each time I went I had play a sub 90 round and when it didn’t happen or look like it would t happen my attitude would crash. Have to enjoy the game and the time on the course. Bob Barker
My mental game is terrific. I do everything you suggest. I shot 58 for 9 holes on Friday, my worst score in 15 years. Had no answer for all my bad shots.
Perfect - when you’re doing all the right stuff mentally then it’s clearly a mechanical issue. Track your stats, study your misses/weaknesses, then get a lesson or use training aids to improve your mechanics.
I read your book last year. Good stuff. Big thing for me is to play "target golf". For me forget mechanics on the course. Look at the target and hit it there.
#8 Don’t Add Up Score! My lowest round ever I didn’t realize I shot PR until my partner approached me in the parking lot. I already had my cleats off. Don’t add up score until you have a cold drink. Michele Low taught me a great trick I still use. I fold my scorecard over after 3 holes.
Love the scorecard trick and couldn’t agree more! My best round last year I had no clue where I was at then I added it up and had to do a double take with number - fully immersed in the present moment
I respect the generalized idea that mental game isn't *that* important if you are shooting in the 100's but I can't relate. When I started MGT I was a 32. Three months later I am now a 24 and I haven't had any lessons, only picked up a different putter. Went from 6 lost balls per round to 2 and from 40 putts to 33. I was selecting targets in a way that stressed me out, was focusing on the wrong thing, thinking about technical stuff, putting with a line, trying to use a clock system for chipping.. when I hit that first tee shot OB I would start going into "fix it" mode and change swing thoughts, start questioning everything and if it didn't improve I would have at least a few holes in a row that I couldn't even remember how many shots I took, I would look at my scorecard and the stats would be blank... I was literally going into rage mode (not outwardly angry or anything, just lost all control of my thoughts and process). As an INTP I now try to go into every shot thinking of my intention and just feel it. Feel the lie, feel the wind, see the landing. Nothing technical other than the distance I want to hit. If setup feels off or awkward, don't pull the trigger. On the green, "see" the ball roll into the cup in my head and just go. When something does go wrong such as a shank or a big miss I will stop immediately before reacting and do a double inhale breath and it lets me accept the result and think objectively about what happened. Last round I started with a triple bogey due to a poor tee shot that landed under a low tree, a punch out, an approach that landed in a greenside bunker, a duff... and a two putt from way too close. Collected myself and birdied the second with a great tee shot and jarred the left to right no doubter from 18 feet. Shot a 45 on the front. Lost my first ball on the 14th and carded another triple bogey. Par on the 15th. Fell apart on the 18th, lost two balls, carded a quad and finished with a 50. Three months ago I would have shot a 114 after leading off with a triple. My eyes have been opened. I have the ability to shoot decent scores and now I have the ability to control my mind to allow myself to score well. Getting into the 80's is now a matter of honing skills to shave strokes where I can, continue improving my mental game... and maybe catch a few lucky bounces.
So good, thanks for sharing! Mental golf type is the best - keep up the good work. Just released my episode with John Weir - MGT creator- on my podcast today!
I need to figure this out. I was in a tournament last weekend and went birdie, birdie, par. I started thinking “hey I’m in this thing”. Then the wheels absolutely fell off. Same thing happens if I have to wait a long time for the groups in front of me. Next shots nearly always suck.
Good job realizing it!! But it sounds like you get into results thinking / drifting into the future… gotta stay present & not worry about the future. When you find yourself drifting, acknowledge it, then get back to your routine & take it one shot at a time 👍
My mental game did a 180 a few years ago when I stopped categorizing the lie of the ball. The lie of the ball just is, not good or bad. Each lie has details that you have to account for and determine the right shot/swing/effort/etc to use. Freed my brain up to play the shot. However, if I’m in a footprint in an unraked bunker, all bets are off, I’m cursing like a sailor
Love that! I interviewed Dr. Rick Sessinghaus who is a mental coach for Colin Morikawa & he said something similar. There are no bad lies, just gotta deal with them & have the right mindset to deal with accordingly
It's not advice I recieved, but it's something I learned through playing for 13 years. It's patience. Especially in competition, you have to know that people are going to make errors, especially if they're too aggressive. People take too many chances, and screw themselves because they're thinking about their opponent, rather than hitting a good, clean, safe shot. More often than not, when you play it smarter than everyone else, you find you tend to pick up shots on the field without having to do much, because a lot of the field are going to lose shots playing too aggressive. Naturally, being patient is key, and just realize a 64 can easily be a 71 the next round.
This is the epitome of wicked smart golf! You are 100% right... all about having the patience and discipline to let good golf happen and not try to force it. Appreciate you sharing this insight and watching!
Great tips - thanks! If you struggle to visualise things maybe have a look at aphantasia (also known as 'mind blindness'). I've got it, along with roughly 2-5% of the population... 🙂
I do love your content. You’re obviously correct and clearly know how to coach. I do offer that Robbin’s offering (5% - 95%) is a terrible approach. The counter: “If I were given one hour to save the planet, I would spend 59 minutes defining the problem and one minute resolving it,” Albert Einstein. I understand the point you’re making (don’t wallow in self pity) - however elite thinkers and strategists do the opposite of what you’re proposing.
Thanks - feel like we’re on the same page? Lol might’ve had my editor word it wrong but as the divot example… I’m gonna spend 5% being mad & 95% thinking of how I can hit the shot to bounce back quickly
@@wickedsmartgolf you’re the man and your content (and coaching) is gold. I am not a cheap seat hater and wouldn’t comment if I disagreed or didn’t agree - I offered it up bc I’m a fan and subscriber.
On golf, as in life, there is only the next shot... whatever happened before, you cannot undo it. Otherwise, hit a mulligan (nothing wrong with it, unless you are in a tournament!), worst case scenario is that you'll have to hit the first one....
“Let it go” ☝🏻 EVERYONE hits bad shots. Put it behind you and FOCUS on moving forward. Or as Rafiki said in “Lion King”, “It does not matter, … it is in the past” 😉
