      One time at Claire’s I saw a mom bring her special needs child in (she has Down syndrome) for an ear piercing. She looked no older than two. The poor kid kept crying and pushing the woman holding the gun away; she didn’t even understand what was going on. It broke my heart when she cried; she sounded like she was in so much pain. Then she and her mom left. Half the time I don’t even know why I go in Claire’s anymore. I’m allergic to the earrings and the other stuff is meant for kids. When it comes to any piercing at all, it’ll be my kids’ choice no matter what gender they are.

    With the piercing babys one, I didn't realize how lucky I am till recently.
    In my culture it is the norm that girls get pierced IMMEDIATELY after birth, there are even nurses specifically for that in the hospitals.
    But my mother decided, that she didn't want that for me and didn't allow any of my family to interfere with that decision (also in the country I was born in contrary to the one the rest of my family is born, piercing baby's right after birth is just not allowed..... as it should be, so yeai!)

      In Brazil is very commonplace for babies to get their ears pierced after birth or after a few weeks/months, which was the case to me, I've always worn earrings since I can remember, I never thought much about it until I saw this video. This should not be allowed, it's so crude and cruel thing to do to a child at such a young age, it should be the child's choice.

      I experienced something similar too. But it was my dad who didn't allow to pierce my ears. He hid my earings lol. In Chile (where I was born) it's just like how you described it. the whole “babies don’t form memories so it’s fine” argument really irks me bc like,, yeah you can’t recall specific events from when you were a baby but the brain does have permanent rewiring if a baby is abused, neglected, or goes through something else traumatic. people treat babies as if they’re not tiny people and are just dolls and it’s so fucking annoying.

    • @miso6758
      @miso6758 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    • @Ehrunn

      @@miso6758 Except that's serious. The body just knows it's been really hurt (coz wtf piercings are puncture wounds, of course it's severe), and the brain rewires to make sure that doesn't happen anymore. Why would you consider a literal hole in your body to not be a traumatizing experience ? Especially since babies are so fragile ! The thing is that while strong memories don't form until late 2- early 4, infants DO memorize things, particulary sensory stimuli- a care givers face, soft touch, voices, etc, they form strong emotional bonds with their caregivers based on feedback, positive experiences lead to a healthy expressive baby, negative traumas can cause emotional damage and detatchment that could persist even after the memory is gone through coping mechanisms formed early on. Unneccessary trauma inflicted on a baby is abhorrent: piercings, FGM, circumcision. ANYTHING that is not strictly neccessary for medical reasons (NO religious or cultural exceptions) is an atrocity against children, apart from the issues of bodily autonymy, you don't know what level of psychological risk you are inflicting as psychological trauma could persist into adulthood in some cases. It also exposes your child to unnecessary risk of infections, bleeding and reactions. Even if you are sterile, babies aren't known for their ability to follow aftercare instructions, they WILL touch it, and who knows what else they've touched, especially if they are at the crawling and exploring stage! You are supposed to protect your child from pain, harm and suffering and help them when it happens, not inflict it deliberately for your beauty/cultural/religious standard! If you think about it you form more connections in your brain in the first few years than for most of the rest of your life, your identity is still forming, your ability to reason, to understand your reality and those around you, to fit in, learn many complex new skills like walking, talking and manipulating objects, ideally you want to facilitate a healthy development, poking holes and cutting body parts off is not conducive to that!

    • @5688gamble
      @5688gamble 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      You don't want your babies first lesson to be about how cruel those they rely on most can be as to hold them down and inflict pain for no reason.

      My 2 girls decided they wanted their ears pierced at the same time....the youngest was not quite 5, the older one was 6.5. The younger one cried a little bit after the first one, and she was worried about the 2nd one. We did manage to work with her to get it (hugs, holding down her arm as she'd try to cover her ear, encouragement) as she did really want it but got nervous over it. We were fully prepared to let her walk out with just one lobe pierced though. I remember my oldest with her first haircut at about 2-3years old. She was on my lap but was really nervous and kept moving around, not very happy. Another hairdresser came up and asked if we wanted her to hold our daughter still. Ummm...NO! It's just a haircut, not a medical necessity. We left without a cut and simply waited a couple months and went to a different place where they weren't prepared to hold down a child!

    It should be illegal to pierce a baby’s ears. I don’t care if it’s a cultural thing. That was definitely a perfect example of child abuse. People might want to combat at me for saying this. IDGAF. The only reason parents get their baby girls ears pierced is because they think it looks cute. I’m sorry but no. It isn’t cute. It’s sickening. You can go ahead and try to change my mind. Good luck with that. I’ve had almost 40 years on this earth and nobody has succeeded in that yet.

      The red string in the baby video is a Mexican tradition that’s supposed to ward off Evil spirits and protect the baby…. HOWEVER most if not all tie the string around the baby’s wrist. What they did was so awful and so unnecessary when they literally could’ve made a bracelet like most do😭

      Jokes on her, it's never too late to get an infection or other piercing issues. I once had an elderly customer come in while i was at work and hers was actively bleeding, had to give her a paper towel to stop the dripping. And this was a piercing that looked like it was there a while, it was stretched, like how it is on old ladies that have been wearing heavy earrings for decades

    I didn't pierce either of my daughter's ears when they were babies, I did what my mom did and wait till I was old enough to express themselves that they actually want their ears pierce. For me that was 4, my oldest was 7, and my youngest who is 5 wants nothing to do with needles amd piercings and I'm perfectly fine with that.
    Wheb my youngest was 2 I was shopping and some lady comes up to me to complement my daughter how pretty she is blah, blah, blah, but then said something that made me go," Seriously WTF!?". She goes, "Where are you babies earrings!? She is really pretty but would be beautiful with little diamonds in her ears." And continues, " You do know your suppose to pierce their ears when they are babies right!? I took all 4 of my grand babies to get their ears pierce at a few months old, and they NEVER leave the house with some types of earrings in". I was flabbergasted, and just told her" Well good for you and your grand babies, but I don't like the idea of piercings a baby and can't stand seeing my kids in pain so why would I take them to get something Idk they even want just because YOU think it would make my kids look better!?".

    So, I've booked one of my kids in for ear piercings this week and it made me wonder. He's 12 and have been talking about off and on for about five years now, so when I contacted my piercer, he was fine to schedule it in and made sure to let me know I'd need to have my son's birth certificate present at the time or he couldn't get pierced. Makes sense, piercer needs to be covered and I need to prove that I am legally allowed to consent to him getting the piercings, BUT it made me wonder if this is something Claire's requires too or if any random person could bring in any random kid and get the kid pierced... I don't remember ever needing my birth certificate to get pierced at Claire's or any place like that. The thought that any random person could take any random kid and get them pierced is more than a little terrifying.

    They used to think that babies didn't feel pain, leading to surgeries on babies being performed without anaesthesia up until the mid 80's. Even though it was before they had memories, those babies (now adults) ended up with severe PTSD and trauma because of it.
    I'm not saying that piercing your babies ear is the same level as surgery, I'm just saying that "they don't form memories" is a shit excuse, because you're still causing harm and trauma, both physically and mentally.

  • @heatherlynn4652

    Babies may not form memories yet but they absolutely can form traumas from experiences like this. Some men have been found to have trauma from being circumcised right after birth. The pain and their protectors/parents not protecting them stays with them
