But black people down here are pretty diverse in the sense that they aren't just walking stereotypes like they are in the nasty cold northeast. We actually take pride in ourselves and Charleston is where it all started here for most of us. There isn't anywhere else in the US like it here. There are actual 'hoods' yes. IA lot of brothers have lost their lives here over nothing, and we as a community aren't proud of it. But things have gotten better overall.

I used to live with a dancer right by Birthas kitchen, the best place to eat in Charleston. I was born in St. Francis hospital near Calhoun and lived in George lagree homes my dad's house was on o'hare Avenue and my mother grew up off remount on blackwell Avenue I have awesome memories and have no problem with any of the people in those areas and I really miss the food at Birthas.

@ Detroit & Flint hoods are abandoned, hardly anyone lives there, they are all ghost towns....BUT Philadelphia row houses are not only connected & have extremely narrow streets where the person across the street from you is only a few steps from your front door BUT they are full of people living there.....more people equals more of a chance to get robbed,shot, beat up or verbally insulted....I think Detroit wins in the category of most abandoned hood with decayed structures.

10 mile is referred to as the 10 mile line to the City of Charleston. There was a corner store at rivers and remount with the same name. I worked at the fire station on remount for a while, wild calls and good times.
I used to live in North Charleston...I was homeless on those streets for almost 3 years. My boyfriend and I lived in my SUV for about a year and a half before it got repoed...then we were on foot....I finally moved back to Florida to get clean... If you want to know where the REAL hoods are...and the REAL deal hit me up.

When we met we both had good jobs....then my best friend hung himself in his sister and I's house and we found him. Then slowly bad shit just started happening. The people are actually really cool even in the really ghetto areas, they mostly always speak just like most other parts of the south. Way different from people in Chicago and Detroit. I like the vibe of the area and the local accent is interesting, it sounds kind of like the nola accent.

I've been to Charleston SC also, every place has its poor area & I agree it's nothing extra grimy about it just the average poor area that's in all cities....BUT for extreme hoods please see those cities mentioned above.
