Master P really changed rap. Before everyone thought you needed a major label to sell a million albums. Before P mixtapes were for hard-core fans and industry people. He raised the quality and sold it to the average rap fan. He was making so much money when big record companies started trying to buy his record company he told them to kick rocks so they just gave him a distribution deal just to get a piece of the action. Once people started to see P get rich owning his on music it really got so many rappers to not wait for a major label and go independent like him. He broke the whole sellout idea in rap. McHammer got called a sellout for being a rapper and entrepreneur before P but after P Jay-Z was called a genius for doing the same thing. He really doesn't get the credit he deserves.
He still needed a major label to distribute his music. No Limit was originally distributed by Priority Records the same label that distributed Ruthless. After that deal was up No Limit signed to Universal in 2001. He definitely didn't raise the quality because none of his artists lasted. DMX and Jay Z were the biggest artists during their run.
He soaked up game from the independent artists’ rap scene in the Bay Area in Northern California , he was rapping out of Richmond California early in his career.
Funny your daddy mentioned Dr. Dre on Mr. Ice Cream Man, when in fact that song is sampled from World Class Wreckin Cru - Turn Off The Lights . A Group Dr. Dre was in before N.W.A

Glad you made this one, brings back memories. No Limit had it locked down in the late 90’s early 2000’s. Was always something to look forward to from them.
Amazing review of Master P! I think your Dad would really enjoy a few songs from Project Pat from his “Mista Don’t Play” album. He’s another legend from the south, he came from the 3-6 Mafia camp
No Limit put out 23 albums in 1998. 10 went platinum, 11 went gold. That is just in-sane! It had to do with the deal he got. He got offered a million and his brother C Murder wanted to take it. P was smart and brokered a deal unheard of. He was like the only rapper in the game with real money.
Master P always said he was not a great rapper. He put his money behind his brothers Silkk and C Murder. Many have done so afterwards, but Silkk was the first to intentionally rap offbeat as a signature style. None of No Limits music was prolific or profound, but P changed everything known of the industry by amassing a huge group of artists on a label and releasing albums every 20-30 days. This was honestly made possible by the label’s exclusive producers “Beats By The Pound” (KLC, MO-B Dick, Majic) who worked night and day on production and even singing hooks on the songs. When they left the label, it essentially fell apart.
No Limit released a new cd almost every Tuesday between 1998-2001. They had over 20 artists. They were going gold every week. 500k copies sold was a huge accomplishment weekly. They had a production team that really led to this consistency of sales.
You guys NEED to check out 2 no limit artists in particular.. Mac "Mac Phipps" , he put out 2 classics on No Limit. He's the most lyrical and best story teller from no limit. He got falsely accused of murder when his career was going to take off. Spent 21 years in prison for it and now he is out doing great things. Also Mia X is one of the greatest female emcees , if not the greatest .
I was having flashbacks this entire video. A nice stroll down memory lane is what you guys gave me this evening. Today is Saturday, March 9th, 2024. I was graduating middle school and getting going in high school around this time. The lyrics weren't amazing from Master P or Silkk; but they were on some really nice sounding tracks.
Fiend was one of my faves on the label. Hes the second artist to rap. His albums are so good, oast to present. He's one of the few that is still putting out music. Silkk is very well known for not ever being on the beat, he's even admitted it. As a 42 year old adult, it drives me nuts. But back in the 90's, you couldn't tell me anything bad about any of them. Brings back so many memories, I love it! Mia X was the "Mother" of the whole label. Aka "Mama Mia." I have so much useless knowledge of No Limit Records, lol.
Growing up, my favorite ever was No Limit. I have every CD they came out with... Every Movie DVD, Master P Clothes, Doll, speakers and amps, food... Man that dude had so much! He got his start out here in the bay area where I'm from. Smart man...
I never understood why Master P isn't in the mainstream music anymore, as I commented before my father told me to listen to less music but I never listened now that he has transitioned I can't help to wish I could have the time with him and explain how music is so important to me and then I realize he knew but he also trying to help work less. But also is music that helped me feel and connect with him in the spirit world and the dream and feeling I felt when I came to New York and had forgotten about manifested and came back alive. So music is the connection.
You guys have covered most of the top southren artists except for one group, and that's "8BALL & MJG." Here are a few tracks I think your dad may like. Thingz- from the Spaceage forever album. Nobody But Me- from the In Our Lifetime album. Mr Big- from the Coming Out Hard album

You nailed it - it was the scale with which one of their hits would hit. Make em Say was massive - then Mystikal had some great features and Shake Ya Ass was massive - it was particularly cool because they were independent

Mac- Boss B***** (w/ Mia X) Master P- Bout it Bout it Mac- M$rder M$rder K!ll K!ll (w/ Mystikal) Silk- it ain’t my fault (w/ Mystikal) Lil Jon- I don’t give a F (w/ Mystikal) Mystikal- Danger Mystikal- shake ya a$$ Snoop Dogg- Woof Friend is good too but I can’t think of the names of the songs I like. It’s so funny your dad said that the horns remind him of James brown. They use to compare Mystikal to James Brown… the rap version though…lol. Check out the song with him and Brun Mars. Perfect example
Mo B Dick is part of Beats By The Pound... They do their Production/Beats. Those dudes were the best thing that happened to No Limit Records. They were really good at making hits
I think your dad would like: Master P - Burbons And Lacs, Master P - Always Come Back To You, Snoop Dogg & Master P - Snoop World! Other No Limit-records: Snoop Dogg & Mia X - Slow Down, Mystikal - Ghetto Fabolous, C-Murder - Ghetto Millionaire, C-Murder - Where Do We Go ✨

I'm 45 and kai hope I'm not spelling it wrong I love what you're doing. I sent my dad one of y'all's videos because while I of course listened to his music I never really sat him down and played mine. Love the concept love the channel
You nailed it - it was the scale with which one of their hits would hit. Make em Say was massive - then Mystikal had some great features and Shake Ya Ass was massive - it was particularly cool because they were independent
I was hoping you’d do “Burbons and Lacs”. I wanted to see if your dad would recognize the beat they sampled for it.
I love No Limit so much! Mystikal and Mia X are my faves. I owned all of their CDs I think.
Mac- Boss B***** (w/ Mia X)
Master P- Bout it Bout it
Mac- M$rder M$rder K!ll K!ll (w/ Mystikal)
Silk- it ain’t my fault (w/ Mystikal)
Lil Jon- I don’t give a F (w/ Mystikal)
Mystikal- Danger
Mystikal- shake ya a$$
Snoop Dogg- Woof
Friend is good too but I can’t think of the names of the songs I like.
This makes me wanna find those CDs. Lol gotta make a playlist. lol
When pops asked what “slang” means! 😂 I love that he’s listening to the beats and the lyrics. He’s definitely got an ear for music!
Master P is 🐐
Master P, Fiend , Silk, Mia X, Mystkal on Ugh...
Didn't you guys do Jay Electronica? He is from New Orleans originally.
When you talk about peak No Limit you have to talk about MAC, Shell Shocked album is still in rotation to this day.
In order of appearance for "Make 'Em Say Ugh"
Master P
Fiend
Silk
Mia X
Mystikal
The shiny suit wasn't an influence from Diddy. It was from Bishop Don Magic Juan and the Player's Ball.
Master P started before 1999. Sold cassette tapes and cd's out of his car. He also had a Nickelodeon show with his son Romeo.
Down South Legend 💯💪
Everyone knows we were all just waiting for “Make em say ugh” to show up in the video 😂
Another group which released many mixtapes is g-unit with their g-unit radio stuff. Since your dad loves 50 maybe show him some stuff from g-unit too. Love you guys and your content❤
Gangsta Lean by DRS will definitely break him down especially if he sees the video
You may also enjoy Feels Right, it was a collaboration between Mystikal and Bruno Mars performed on SNL
dont forget he had a 10 day contract with the hornets in the nba if im right ? or it was only training camp for 10 days , correct me if im wrong please people . respect to master p tho !!!! shit im old lol im 37 now pfff
This is indeed played at funerals to this day.
It’s so funny your dad said that the horns remind him of James brown. They use to compare Mystikal to James Brown… the rap version though…lol. Check out the song with him and Brun Mars. Perfect example
Mia X / La Chat and Gangsta Boo were the rap queens of the south
Mo B Dick is part of Beats By The Pound... They do their Production/Beats. Those dudes were the best thing that happened to No Limit Records. They were really good at making hits
Master P got me thru some rough times in the 90s MasterP will always be part of my life somehow.
C-Murder - Akickdoe (ft. UGK & Master P)
This was one of my favorite No Limit songs from that era. C-Murder is another one of Master P's brothers.
Mia X Top 5 female rapper's all time
He's a great entrepreneur. I remember in my WWF days he joined with his own crew and blessed us with R Truth lol
Lil Wayne
I was hoping you were gonna play bourbon n lacs but still a fire video
Dad is keen. He mentioned Dr. Dre. The beat is a sample from The World Class Wrecking Crew, which was Dre’s first group!
Cover TRICK DADDY! He definitely was doing it in the South.
His hits:
Shut Up
Lets Go
Ima Thug
Take it to the House
In The Wind
I think your dad would like:
Master P - Burbons And Lacs,
Master P - Always Come Back To You,
Snoop Dogg & Master P - Snoop World!
Other No Limit-records:
Snoop Dogg & Mia X - Slow Down,
Mystikal - Ghetto Fabolous,
C-Murder - Ghetto Millionaire,
C-Murder - Where Do We Go
✨
Master P also played in the NBA
