Today I'm going over how much I paid for the 2000 Harley Davidson Dyna FXDX. I found this bike used on OfferUp/Craigslist. Initially, I didn't consider it too seriously because of the high mileage (52k). However, after doing a bit more research, I decided to go check the bike out in person. I'm glad I did.

When you want a particular bike and you finally find one, book values go out the window.
Exactly. Especially if you aren't gonna be broke over it
Tru that
A few years ago I paid $12 grand for a 2006 Cadillac CTS Sport Luxury model with 78K mile on it. That was probably about $1500 to 2 grand too much. My reasoning? The car was beautiful inside and out, with an amazing upgraded OEM paint job and new brakes, alternator, battery, and some other things as well. I felt that I would not find a gem like this one again. Driving it plastered a smile from ear to ear on my face. (The Sport has OEM performance suspension and is fairly rare, as well). Do I regret paying too much for the car? Hell no.

Exactly!
Facts
This past week I bought a 2000 model FXDWG. It's super clean 22,000 miles, almost stock, with a Stage I, Vance&Hines, extra chrome, 3 different seats, 2 different sissy bars, luggage rack, stock take-off pipes, and a new tire and rim band in the box. $5000 here in Texas.
When I got it home I pulled the Cam Chest cover and inspected the Cam chain tensioner shoes. Both inner and outer shoes have minor wear. I think I made a good deal.
Got me an '04 FXDX for $6k... 3 months ago... in SoCal. 18k miles and mostly stock. No neutral issues. Starts up on first stab. Love the dual gauges up top. Blank slate for bolt ons and upgrades. Love it!
Just picked up an 01 fxd barn find. Sitting for almost ten years. 5k
Oil change , fresh gas, new batt. Started right up
@@robertlaube574Sounds like you found a great bike! I have over 60k miles on my 01 FXD, has V&H pipes, stage 2, and Legend Revo A shocks on rear and progressive springs on the front. They are alot of fun!
May wanna check the crank run out. Bought my 05’ for 7200 and eventually learned it had a bad crankshaft. Put a 1900 dollar crank in it including 1000 extra for bearings, gaskets, and so on. She runs like a CHAMP now but man it’s scary buying these 88’s. 🤣 (mines a 95 ci now)
I bought a standard FXD (not sport) brand new in 2000... I still have it.. 25k miles on it! The FXD was the entry level big bore Harley at the time.. I paid $12k brand new with the cobalt blue paint
Harleys are a sweet addiction. Got 25k wrapped up in a Roadster, another 30K in a sport glide. My 11th and 12th . Love my bikes. Riding 40 years. Nothing beats the sun on your face , wind in your hair the roar of a Harley. Freedom represented in a motorcycle. 💯🇺🇸💪
I don't think you got ripped off at all. Those upgrades are worth a ton - not to mention the cost of installing them (if you are not mechanically inclined). Here in CA, a bike like that sells for 14K EASY.
Yeah you did well, it's bad-ass dyna with the upgrades you will always want. I am getting my 01 Dyna FXD to that point, but dropped 4k into it over the past year. But it rides and sounds like a dream now! I think the Dyna's will hold their value.
I just got a 2011 street bob fxdb a few days ago for $4200. It’s got 42,000 miles. But a lot has been done to it. Reaper cams, stealth exhaust, legends rear and upgraded fork springs+triple trees up front, tbars, etc. Its also got a bunch of other stuff. It’s basically built as a “dyna bro” bike. My buddies keep telling me I over payed because of the mileage but I think I got a good deal. Just curious for your guy’s opinion.
Sounds like a steal to me! 💯🤙
Upgrades, close to home, bike you want… solid deal. I paid 9500 for a 2001 FXDXT with the upgrades and drove 4 hours to get. Made sense to me.
I just bought the 2001 FDX with screaming eagle stage 1 for 20k miles for 2500 bucks. But it has sat in a garage for 3 years because the owner passed away. I bought it from his wife. I can’t wait turn this machine into my own, I loved your video bro. Do more please
Temkin main crank bearings also make the crank bulletproof. Another reason the earlier twin cam motors are good...
Also John, make sure the cam chain tensioner is good...after 20 thou miles it'll fail if you didn't know that already...s&s cam plate is one of the best mone u can buy along with the gear drive setup...that thing will wheelie all day with that stuff....its expensive but it'll last the life of the bike...
Paid $3000 for my 97 Evo fxd dyna with 38k on the clock in very nice condition. Came with leather bags, windscreen and Vance &Hines long shot pipes. Its a keeper.
market value
Got a 99 Dyna FXDL a month ago with 17k miles on it a couple of upgrades (Bassani Exhaust, SS Super, etc) but mostly stock for $4.5k. Bike is in good shape, Sent it into the shop after for a full inspection and replace some of the aged parts (break pads, tires etc.) which cost me another $2.2k
I just paid $3500 for a one owner 2005 FXDX with 40k miles. It’s had some work done to the engine and came with extras. Meticulously cared for. Its super minty. Flying to MD next week and riding it back to TN. 🤙🏻
I know you said the Newer dyna’s are bigger but the pictures don’t do it justice. Would you ever do a comparison video?
I picked one up for 6,500 with the screaming eagle engine and Mikuni carb it had less than 17,000 miles but it didn't run didn't need much time to get it running but I got it running and it has over a hundred horsepower on the dyno. I've been looking for over a year for a similar deal because I want another but can't find anything close for under 10,000.
Have you tried revving the engine a lil bit to help it slip into nuetral
Bought anFXDX new in 2000 and enjoyed it quite a bit. You paid a fair price and got a clean , modded Dyna.
Jon. Not sure how well it would play in your bike because of the harder riding style you have. My FLH had a hard clutch especially when cold. I did some research and found a lot of Harley riders use transmission fluid in their primaries.
I took the plunge and switched from the HD primary oil to Type F trans fluid. It made a massive difference in the clutch actuation. As of yet no slipping or negative behavior. Could be worth looking into other fluid options.
Barnett recommends different ATF for different desired clutch behaviors. Bike clutches are quite like automatic transmission clutch packs (and some aftermarket performance clutches use car parts, it making no sense to invest in an oddball fiber and steel plate production).
I think the price is fair for what’s done to the bike. Love that purple
I was thinking $6500ish. Damn $9k is a lot haha. But at the same time it’s worth it. It’s purple after all 😉
Some of these prices for bikes are out of hand, yes all the upgrades are a plus. The FXR ,FXDX, and T, I don’t think I’d pay $9k for a bike that old. I paid $4500 for my FXR. That’s what the should go for. Nice bike enjoy
shiiiiet my 98 FXDL was only 4K
Hey Jon. I’m 5’8” and I find the perfect riser and bar setup is 4.5” pull back risers with biltwell tracker high bend bars. Gives me the perfect “dirt bike” like position that I love. Just thought I’d put that out there as you said you were going to switch up the risers
Got an 03 super glide for $5400 at the Harley dealership with 17k miles and it's stage 2. I love this bike.
Is that the original TC 88 , any upgrades in the cam chest ? Nice ride !
Yeah I got an 07 fxdb streetbob for that had goldfire pull back risers, Memphis Shades fairing, saddle man seat, chain conversion, piggy back suspension, engine and air intake upgrades, fresh paint job....etc with 60k miles on it for 6k. But I'm in Florida, not Cali so... big difference! 😂
We paid $4500 3 yrs ago for same exact bike for my girlfriend, minus the upgrades and hers had about 18k in miles, market must be a lot higher out there. She loved the color and it’s a good size for her. Hers had some engine upgrades, cam, exhaust and tune. I love earlier Dyna’s I had a 94 low rider.
Riding in the Ozarks west coast is super expensive. That bike would be 6-7k max out here in NC, especially with mileage.
98 Dyna FXD with 10k miles, no add ons, mostly stock, I paid 4 grand two years ago. Now I got the whole dyna bro look for way less than 6500. Guess I need to take my bike to the coast and sell it.
Some wheels and tires and brake combos can cost 4k.. You got the perfect bike to personalize.. The sky is the limit..
i just got one almost the same for 5500 and has some good upgrades, 24k miles, i just started riding so its my first bike
I guess I did better on my bike then I thought if a 20 year old dyna is worth 9k . I paid 10k for my 2015 dyna low rider with the 103 twin cam. Had 15k miles on it and had a stage one done with Vance and hines 2 into 1 pro pipe, big sucker air cleaner , and fuel pack. It also came with the day maker headlight and led blinker upgrade lights. Now I’ve added probably another 3k on my own doing suspension and risers and bars and such. But I’m
Happy to know I gotta a good price and I bought mine from a Harley dealer. Awesome channel John. Enjoy your vids bud.
I still love my 2000 super glide, I know it's not a ElectraGlide Limited Low or anything of that nature. But for day rides it is still my favorite of my bikes.
Im gonna go out on a limb here and say it might be time for a new pair of gloves soon brotha. I've been staring at those holes for quite a few videos now lol
LMAO me too, I didn't want to be "That Guy" we'll do it together
Maybe I just ride too much but my shit always has at least a few holes man. Even brand new ones don’t last more than a week or two from pulling over and tinkering with stuff from time to time & accidentally touching hot parts on the bike in the process. Just happens lol. I didn’t realize it irked people thought it just came with the territory kinda
I’d say you got that bike for a great price!, I got my FXD dyna 2009 model pretty much stock for 6500 and it’s taken a solid chunk of change to get it where I want.
When at stop, and wanting neutral, I pull in clutch and wiggle bike forward and backwards as I gently lift the gear lever with foot. It usually falls in easily, even on stubborn bikes.. I got my Dyna, totally stock, then dropped over $9k so far.. As long as your taking care of priorities, be good to yourself. If you make the bike what you want, it takes money and time. Everyone has their own vision, so you usually dont get all your investment back..
If I'm at a stand still and can't get the bike to go in neutral, I just give the throttle a lil rev and while it's revving, I try and pop it in neutral. Maybe that'll help.
damn i just got a 2010 dyna streetbob for 3k. 25k miles ive ridden it over 100 miles so far no issues. Def the best bike ive bought
Need to adjust the primary chain and it should go into neutral easier. At least that's how it goes with my Sportster
You got a good bike whatever you paid for it doesnt matter as long as your happy with the purchase, be sure to have the cam chain tensioners checked they are probably worn
also check the inside of the tank for rust
What you pay for a particular bike is always subjective.I just paid $20,000 for an 88 model evo softail and I am very happy with it but if you don't know my motivations for buying this bike you might think that I was ripped off. After 15 min of explaining upgrades condition and importantly history of the bike the value becomes much more personalized .
I think you did good for the money 💰 the seller put into it,it’s almost completely ready for the kind of riding you want it for.
Having a hard time finding neutral, you made need a new compensator or a clutch adjustment.
Has the cam chain tensioner issue been fixed this motorcycle. I have a 2004 Heritage Classic with the 88. I replaced the cam chain tensioner with the Harley Kit which includes the Hydraulic cam chain tensioners and improved oil pump. I also had a oil cooler installed.
So many extras you did good John. Upgrades alone were a couple grand, and not much traveling and /or shipping. Good deal for sure. Everything is so dam expensive today when buying parts
Go easy on the wheelies. Sometimes the front mounts break off of the crankcases.
Ripped off? Haha, best joke ever. Come to Norway, the fxdx starts at $10,500 stock with 37k miles. I would call your price a bargain. Im looking at one now, 00 fxdx with some engine upgrades, 2-1 exhaust, fairing and tbars 40k miles - It costs $16k
are those batteries for the Dyna non-serviceable ? (can you add water to the cells ?)
Good buy bud. Over here in New Zealand youd probably pay round $12000 $13000 NZ dollars for that set up. As for registration if the bikes over 600cc regos are $580.00 per year
Im getting my 2006 dyna lowrider today for $5600 bone stock now im going to spend a lil on my handlebars and rotors first then seat
I have a v max there is a kit I put on mine that can put the boost on at 3000 Rpm or you can lock it on or off . Keep off for just cruising for mpg always on for playing.kit was like 40 dollars and about an hour to install. Best mod I ever did on mine.
The one Harley I want
You made a good deal and don't worry about the miles, the motor is good for 3 or 4 hundred thousand if you keep up on the maintenance ...
I’m sorry but did you just say 3 or 4 hundred thousand miles ….😳, fake news ….
Recently picked up a 2011 FXDWG w/ 25k on the odometer, has Arlen Ness 2-1. Let's just say, I had to buy it for the price.
$9000 for the bike. Not a bad deal, FXDX is top dog in the Dyna world. I’d rather have a 2000-02 than a newer one myself.
I don't think the cafe fairing looks right with the relocated gages. . I think I a tsport would be alot nicer, it even has the round spots for those exact gages.
My dyna was doing the same thing going to neutral, after adjusting the primary chain to spec it fixed that problem, easily goes into neutral when stopped.
You got lucky man because that's never fixed any fxdx I've ever owned
I have the same bike (1999) 40k miles and I paid $4200 for it. I will say it doesn't have near the upgrades that you have on yours. I started upgrading mine and currently getting prices for more upgrades. Given all the upgrades I think you made out pretty good. It's an awesome bike.
dude the registration on my 2005 klr650 in ga is 13$ a year ins is $113
If you were in it for drifting, which one would you drift? I’m aware you don’t have any experience doing that on the Superglide Sport, but what would you say is better?
Now how about riding overall? Which one rides smoother? Which one rides like a “Harley” lol? The street bob or the superglide sport?
If you are happy you didn’t get ripped off. 5 months ago I bought a mint condition all stock 2009 Fat Bob in Pearl Black with new battery, rubber, fresh servicing and only 6100 miles for $4300. I truly found one of those deals of a lifetime.
That is a unicorn!
Hey Jon, i wanted to suggest something about your finding neutral issue. I have the same exact bike. I had the same problem. Take all of the slack out of the clutch cable. When the bike gets hot it will have a little more slack as well. Obviously not so much slack that clutch is being disengaged, but basically 0mm of freeplay. Giving the engine a slight rev will also help just like any other bike.
I paid 2k for aa 97 EVO FXDS-Conv 13k miles, needed battery tank clean petcock replaced throttle cables replaced and fluids.
Then im GIVEN an 09 Fat Bob, actually paid me $100 to get it outta his backyard! Sold it for 5k and then upgraded the EVO bike!
We should ride sometime!
I can tell u all there is to know about a FXDX
Hey Jon what length risers did this bike come with?
Came with 10" but I ended up throwing 6.5" cause I'm shorter.
I have the same one bought new in 2000 neutral is and stays a problem to find
I can’t believe the price difference from Tennessee to Arizona. It’s crazy but hey get what you want. I love it
I live in north ga and no longer feel bad about 8k for my 98 road king with 53k on it, and I used to live in Phoenix glad I didn't buy until coming out here....
Rego for my 2011 streetbob in Australia is $50 for road worthy every year and $600 for green slip and $400 for the taxes and fee at the roads we get ripped in Australia
That British Crown needs to be paid. You guys in Australia ever going to declare independence and kick out British Petroleum and cut that umbilical cord with England?
Robert Polkamp I wish we need big change hire it’s stupid we have no legal leg to stand on the government pushing in new stupid laws all the time and the minority rule half the country is in complete log down people are killing them selfs at a larger rate then the virus in one state alone
I had that same problem when I first got my fxdl 2002 it was hard to put it in to neutral but you will get use to it bro !
I can appreciate you saying your 2013 Street Bob is a little bit intimidating. I'm a new Rider I've been riding my little Rebel 300 All Summer Long. I do want to keep more of the light weight bobber side but something with more balls
I need a starter bike for my daughter interested in selling the rebel
Jon your a beast,,very athletic dude,u picked up wheeling and drifting,like a pro,,very quick
I paid $6500 for my 08 FXDL, with 10k miles. Only upgrade at the time was exhaust and a power commander. Thought shoot, under $10k for a dyna Lowrider with lowerish miles. Imma snag that! My Honda CB1000R I just picked up. Paid $2500 for that, full Yoshimura exhaust and little higher miles at 23k and some change.
Just bought a 2000 fxd with 16000 miles for 4000 dollars! It’s my first bike
Aye does anyone know where you Cld get that tank bib?? For some reason half of mine is all faded and the other side is shiny so I wanna replace it.
The neutral thing is more common than not. My 05 dyna, 08 dyna, and 05 softail wouldn't go into neutral at a stop unless i blipped the throttle and flicked neutral right as i let off the throttle. I just got in the habit if nuetral before I stopped moving
I have one im looking at its a 2000 as well for 8,500. Is this carb or fuel?
I have a 2000 fatboy and getting into neutral is also tricky have to be rolling the bike back and forth and still sometimes not always easy
20 year old bike for $9000? You can buy a brand new Softail for $14,000. I am avoiding touching any Twin Cam 88. was 2000 still Evo?
One year in Arizona for Jon: $65 One year in California for me: $312
what length rear shocks and handlebar riser is that?
How much would a Dyna FXDX Sport 2003 cost in the US, it was the one they sold for the 100 anniversary of HD. The owner put a lot of upgrades, it runs as fast as 120 mph or 195 km/h, the look is still very original. He told me he invested over 6000 Euros and more into this bike. It has 35000 on the clock. But he said because the engine was rebuild it is less mileage/ km. I also think the bikes like HD cost much more in Europe than the US, and after the pandemic everything has gone up, that’s a fact. Let me know your comments please, or advise. Thx BTW he wants €10k, is it worth it, but in a snuper mint condition. He really looked after it, looks like brand new, and then all the upgrades and he also got it serviced and the recent MOT or TÜV for 2 years. As some of you might already guessed the bike is for sell in Germany 😊
Yeah, I reckon you got a good buy so you should be able to flip it for a fair and reasonable price and maybe buy some safety gear, maybe a jacket and some new gloves seeing you like riding on the back wheel so much, good vid!
😅
Seems the seller brought the emotional component to the table as soon as he showed all upgrades/receipts. Those items might not make a bike appreciate. Why? They might not fit your needs. I was thinking the price was going to be in the mid to high $6k. I like the color, BTW.
Wow I wish I can find one for the price you said I got 7700 right now to spend and I can’t find nothing that’s even close to this I wish I could though everyone keeps telling me you can find the bikes for this price but I can’t
I've got my bike appraised and insured full coverage for 15.0000. That's not exactly what my bike is worth now but as I continue to go in the direction I'm going it will. I understand what you're saying. I think you got a good deal. It's took in some money and time to get my bike where is now.
Kruesi Originals "K-bars" only $ 280 and they're right there in Phoenix !
I just bought a 91 FXDB with 11068 on the clock for 10 grand. Ask me if I'm smiling ear to ear and feel I got a great deal. I have been wanting a sturgis since 1981. So I get it. Trust me you only live once and nobody ever died saying the last words "man I wish I had never bought that motorcycle and had that much fun."
Hey jon! What do you do for a living??
You got a fair deal on a really nice bike. Congrats on the FXDX!
Good buy John, fair price man...im sorry i didn't watch the hole video before ecommentimg on the cam chain...with 52 thou, thats probly already done and upgraded, at least i hope so.....if you want to please id like to know what was installed if you can find out....theres a few companies that make the cam plates....s&s and fuelings probly the best
$61 for 1 yr in the USA!?! Thats crazy. Here in Australia we are paying almost $400 Australian dollars for 1 yr. Thats around $250 US dollars.
Love that bike man...put amsoil transmission gear oil for harleys in the trans john and that should help you get neutral easier, also eliminate that huge clunk sound when shifting to first gear ....i run amsoil in all 3 places on my road king. Thats great oil man....20/50 in the motor, they have their own primary fluid, as well as transmission gear oil....
Purple has grown on me the past couple of years..
Nice bike, good deal
That fxdx is sweet, and the upgrades 👌🏻
Thank you and thank you for your support with our merch!!
Jon's Moto Garage 👍🏼 Anytime! You guys are awesome, keep doing what you are doing.
Great deal harleys never die my 98rk has 87k miles and runs great 👍. Be safe and putting ur bike in neutral at stops especially intersections is dangerous bro
Can I ask why? Just curious. Thanks
Robert Turnbull keep it in gear, that way you can always ride away.
Imagine this:
You are at a stop sign in 1st gear. Out of the corner of your eye you see a car coming too fast- just makes you feel uneasy. So you move to the side a little. All of a sudden that car zips past you and tbones the car going through the intersection. Now imagine being in neutral.
Bought my 01 DX for $6500 with 10k miles. You definitely paid wayyyy too much. I can understand that price with all the upgrades if it had 20k or lower, but damn dude, 55k miles is A LOT. Labor cost shouldn't factor into the purchase at all IMO. Mine came with paint matched rifle fairing that's $600 alone, 2 different seats, powder-coated odds and ends, stage 1 upgrade, and misc. parts from Harley like blacked-out mirrors, levers, etc, and not 1 scratch or dent, it is absolutely a mint bike. Guy I bought it from saved all the original parts in a box, and had every service done to it with a logbook and receipts. I put a 2-1 pipe on it myself for $400. I found one for $9500 that had a 96" with cams, custom paint job, 2-1, Saddlemen, bars & risers, T sport fairing, progressive suspension, and just about everything you'd want with 35k miles. I know they are hard to find, but the FB forums always have 1 or 2 for sale and they are much more realistically priced since all the guys know what it is. For that 9k, I would have bought an FXRT.
I paid 4500 for my bone stock 02 lowrider with 29k miles. 1 old man owner unmolested bike that had just had new drive belt installed and fluids gone through. I think I did ok.
Question...how tall are you? Wanna ride a HD dyna as well but i'm Dutch and im 6.13 feet...
Purple color drops the price by at least 10% on ANY VEHICLE.... Unless it has been owned by Prince....
I live in AZ, back in May I bought a 2005 FXST with 1400 original miles for 5500.00 from a Mesa car dealer. in showroom condition .
That's so cool
Oh and in 2018 I gave $3000 for mine, chromed out but zero upgrades to runabilty or comfort.
$61 for 1 year?!? WTF, that's so cheap compared to Australia. These bikes are triple the price here in Australia too.
61 dollars a year? Damn, after the conversion from New Zealand dollars to USD I pay around $425 a year for registration...
just paid 150 for my 80 shov in ca.
