Nailed it as always!! I think another reason the 2001 was so desirable, along with the brakes and suspension was 1999- 2002 were hot forged crank assemblies with the Timken bearing on the output shaft. They could take more power thrown at the 88 🤘🏼
Yes! The Timken bearing I understand is the more desirable version. My '03 FXDX just missed the boat but it's a clapped-out death trap and that's quite alright with me.
@@FXDLSBrooklyn no they are all stock harley mounts, but when i bought the bike it only had 13000 miles on. i replaced all the wheel bearings, headstock bearings, swingarm bearings and bushes. Rebuilt the forks with uprated springs and oil. I bought a predator front mount to use on mine but i had it 2 years and my bike rides that straight i sold it to my friend as i didn't want to risk messing up the handling on mine. Engine wise, mines got S&S 97", S&S 510 gear drives, thunderheader, mikuni. And now its chain drive too. My last dyna had lots of dyna wobble at around 80/90 mph.
Great video as always man! I'll throw my 2 cents in. Since 2018, I've had a lot of different Harleys. I started on a late model Dyna, then went to a M8 Softail, an FXR, an FXDLS, a 2022 Road Glide, and now I have an 04 FXDXI. My bike is honestly kind of a clapper. The front brakes barely work, it has stock pipes, and when I got it, the motor mounts were so bad you could move the engine in the frame with your hand. Despite all of this, it is hands down, no competition, my favorite Harley I've owned so far. I changed the motor mounts and the thing is straight as an arrow up to triple digit speeds. I did experience gnarly wobble on my 2017 Low Rider with only 2,000 miles so the fact that this bike with beat up 19 year old stock suspension is out performing it is really insane. Here in Western Pa, we have a lot of these really narrow winding backroads that have a lot of 15 mph turns. I used to love crushing them on my supermoto, and my FXDX is the first Harley I've had that I can really hit these roads the way I used to. I attribute it to the 28 degree rake and phenomenal ergonomics of the early model frame. My only real complaint is the terrible gas mileage. It's fuel injected but it usually gets about 30mpg on the dot. But I'm really excited to build this thing out over the years!
@@FXDLSBrooklyn My FXR was a 1993 with 98,000 miles on it. I rode it 4 times over the course of a year and it broke down 3/4 times. Throttle cable snapped, then the belt broke, then the transmission went out. Each time I was really far from home and the bike was just too much drama. It was fun but a total money pit.
I bought my Buell Lightning in 99, a friend of mine had bought a 99 Dyna and proceeded to ride it to California after breakfast it in and the cam timing chain let loose and HD gave him the runaround about it so he u-hauled it back. My buddy Kurt bought a Bagger with a 88 and had no problems. But the timing chain issue scared people at the time. The dealer that I had to take my Buell to for the recall work had a FXDT and I almost traded my Buell for it. I wish I had now, but at the time I commuted 80 miles a day, and couldn't risk having mechanical issues. I've had a couple bikes with the Dyna wobble and i believe expensive motor mounts and the True track cures it abeit expensive. My FXRP never wobbled and i just put stock motor mounts back on it. My RK wobbled but only when you let the throttle at high speed in big sweepers. My Electra Glide Standard doesn't wobble at all but the motor mounts and suspension is very fresh.
2001 fxd.. modified. One of my bikes. Definitely worth it. Upgrade suspension, exhaust and you have a solid reliable cruiser. Make it even better with 95” kit, headwork(or even just 2006 newer heads cause they flow better), update cam chest and you’ll have an amazing ride👌. Love that bike u got. Dope.
Have a hot rod 99 fxdx and a mild 87 fxr, and although i love both for different reasons if i had to choose 1 it would probably be the fxr. Just feels more stable on the highway.
I absolutely love my 2000 dx, motor mounts are one of my next upgrades along with doing a hot rod 88 build. Race techs in the front and legends in the rear made my bike handle like crazy 🤘🏼
Super glide history class lol great video with lots of great info i have a 2008 super glide and im coming from the street bike sence to this fxdx and i love my bike and yes wobble is real thought it was my riding glad to hear its not that lol
Heck yeah! Best bike I ever owned. bullet proof. I owned suzuki, yamaha, honda, HD: wideglide, softail, but nothing beats the FXDX. Get the 99 - 03 versions.
My late model dyna had the wobble for years. Always at 90mph, and 50mph in a corner. I never understood why. Replacing my head bearings and using kinetic structures motor mounts fixed both problems. I'm curious if an early model dyna still has death wobble with motor mount stabilizers?
How is your 6in LED light bar mounted? I have a 2000 FXDX, do you use the break cable mount screw under the head light, because the headlight mount most people use to mount those lights isn't present on these dyna models?
Hey man, just saw this vid after you referred me to it. Good informative vid. One question I still have: would a 2012 superglide custom still have the same visceral sound/vibration and overall feel as the ‘99 one? Or did some of that get engineered out in the later years.
A 2012 is definitely going to feel different than a pre 06 Dyna - However, I think it would still have that feel your after | Best thing to do is test ride a few different years and models
This video just made me never to want to sell my fxdx I found mine 10k original miles cammed 88 performance machine break and upgraded suspension for 800 bucks !
What the hell was harley thinking mounting the swing arm to a rubber mounted transmission rather than the frame? The world may never know. Fresh motor mounts and stabalizers do make a huge difference, provided its all aligned correctly. The wobble is uncomfortable, especially if your bikes worn out in stock form. But if you know the bikes tight. You can just keep pushing that buckaroo as hard as you can hang on.. it ain't going to jump off the road. Just slow you down a bit.

Really good point, the 2000-2002 is definitely the golden years, and you can include 99 in there too with a few changes
I’ve been looking for one for ever
just inherited my dads 2000 fxdx superglide cant wait to ride it
Damn that's awesome man, huge congrats!
my 2000 fxdx rides spot on and never had DYNA wobble on this bike even with 97" kit. Just set it up right and use good tyres.
You run stabilizers and upgraded motor mounts?

Yeah I can't imagine an FXR doing it - I always forget you had that Buell

Classic!

Yeah I know a few people with that 95 kit, makes those bikes crazy
What about the fxdx fuel injected you missed that. Could you do a video or share your thoughts on thoose please
dope video as always
Much appreciated!
You touched my only complaint with FXDX, ignition switch/key location. Unseen on lower right side, instead of up front dash location?

Depends on mileage and what you have into it
