- This is part 2 of working on the custom gaming PC that wouldn't boot! Turns out, the diagnostic LED was correct in it's diagnosis of the CPU being bad. And after removing the heatsink, there's no wonder why it failed. This thing was not making contact with the heatsink because the mounting nuts weren't screwed in flush with the board, leaving a small gap between the CPU and heatsink. This caused the paste to turn into this weird looking stuff and eventually fried the CPU. But with a new CPU and some silly hiccups on my part, it's all fixed and ready to go! The new CPU is an i7-7700, so the customer actually got a nice upgrade from the i7-6700K they were running before!

I found out about it by accident a few years ago. A custom build I did was stuck at .8GHz and sure enough it was that stupid switch

This only exists on super high end motherboards like strix or crosshair
This is used for ln2 overclocking. They turn this on to slow the cpu to its lowest possible clock to reduce ln2 usage while doing other things. There are few other usage of it aswell.
Generally you don't need that to test the cpu.
I just have a big chunk of heatsink that i place over the cpu any time i perform tests like this. It has enough thermal contact to keep the cpu from melting even if it runs at full power.

If I'm not mistaken, it's not going to do any damage, but the card either won't run at all, or will be very slow, possibly crashing.

Considering just how fricking massive and heavy heatsinks and GPUs are these days ( a trend which apparently won't stop anytime soon ), wouldn't a horizontal system work better than a vertical one? I mean, that CPU heatsink looks like it could fall at any moment, know it won't, but the stress it must put on the sockets must be huge, same goes for that monster GPU.
