  • Paul is on top of the world. He shoots wild boar every day of a three-day hunt in Portugal. It’s a farm shoot, and he is out there with friends to help landowners reduce wild boar pressure. He even gets a fox. We are all about thermal this week, talking up our Ultimate Guide to Thermal Spotters and Scopes. And news correspondent Deborah Hadfield tells the story of a gundog trainer in Nottinghamshire who had his guns seized by police and can’t understand why. We are giving away a rifle drag bag from Ian Hodge Fieldsports. David has the latest on the news stump and Charlie brings you the top hunting videos on TH-cam with Hunting TH-cam. It can only be #FieldsportsBritain

    Exellent episode amd partly because it shows why 6.5 creed shoud not be used on anything biger then roe deer. All 3 shots are near perfection and still 3 were needed to lay him down. 7 mm should be minimum for hunting boar.

      @@8asw8 in driven hunt definetly. As for stand goes 6.5 does have enough energy but if you are not to good shooter even then I would not recomend it. Not everyone can do vital zone shot and it takes a bit of luck even for expirienced shooter. Bit of a flinch combined with boar moving his head can easily result in bad shot placment.

    I must say I normally agree 100% with Paul’s choice of firearm for his shooting escapades but I think he erred here in choosing a 6.5 Creedmore for Boar!As the results show , he had runners and failures to stop these formidable creatures! I think he got a little too excited with his trip to Portugal! Even a standard 308 , 30-06 or 270 would have done a much better. Job!🧐🤔😉

      I was wondering myself (as a 6.5 owner) I had previously asked the question on recommended calibers, and most of the pro's in Europe are using 9.3 x 62 for driven hunts , 308WIN as a minimum and this is due to the size of wild boar in the EU (specifically)

    I wasn't impressed with the capabilities of the 6.5CM on driven boar.
    I've taken boar from a high seat with 130gr 270 with no issues, but my go to for driven is the 30-06.

    19:40 again. That would have been a "1shot deal" with a 8x57IS. witht hat shot placement the boar HAS to drop with one shot, no questions asked, and never get back up.
    This video really drives home my opinion that even a .308 is just barely a driven hunt round. The CM being slightly lower in performance doesnt make the cut for this kind of hunt. you put it right, know your kit and its limitations! And I feel vindicated in my belief that my Tikka is not a driven hunt gun. You didnt show the shots on the second boar but none of those 3 were "1shot deals". I like childerley but this performance just wasnt up to spec.

    • @nathan22outdoors8
      @nathan22outdoors8 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      so he uses a 120gr 6.5 creedmoor and that "drives home" your opinion that a .308 isn't sufficient enough for driven hunting?
      Do you know anything about ballistics and the difference between 6.5 vs 308 vs 8x57 ?

    • @8asw8
      @8asw8 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@nathan22outdoors8 as a lifelong hunter with some hundreds driven hunts under my belt, yes. The fact that none of the boars drop in their tracks despite decent-good shotplacement, is what you have failed to mention. now its your turn to form a coherent argument, which you failed at so far

    • @nathan22outdoors8
      @nathan22outdoors8 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@8asw8 you could have a million hunts under your belt for all I care. 308 literally out performs 8x57 with comparable bullets. The fact that you even tried to consider the 6.5 creed as something comparable to a 308 and stacking the 8x57 above is completely false

    • @8asw8
      @8asw8 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@nathan22outdoors8 have you ever shot a gun? this is so laughable it almost makes me cringe. we are talking about a driven hunt scenario still. long range shooting is a different beast.
      8x57IS is around the 4000 J E0 range. say 3800-4100J depending on the exact round
      .308 sits around 3500J, 3600J max. so there is a difference of roughly 500-700J right out of the box.
      advantage 8x57IS. beyond say 300 m the .308 starts pulling ahead but since this is a driven hunt scenario with shooting distances of 70-100m max it doesnt matter.
      The 8mm round clearly takes the cake from a ballistic standpoint for this job, you dont know what you are talking about.
      as for the 6.5, it sits at roughly 3200J of energy E0. so the difference 308-6.5 is smaller than the difference 8x57IS-.308. Yes the creedmoor is absolutely comparable to the .308 but weaker. However it outperforms the .308 ballistically at longer ranges easily. the creedmoor is fast surpassing the 308 for similar uses in gun sales.
      conclusion: in a driven hunt scenario the 8x57IS plays in a differnet league than both of the others. its not even close. the creedmoor is slightly weaker than the .308 which just barely makes the cuts for driven hunts in my book. if we are sitting in a high seat and shooting say game up to 100kg the .308 and the creedmoor are good options. if we need to reach out a little further, they surpass the 8mm. but again, we are talking driven hunt. you need to put the hammer down on those pigs. 8x57IS, .30-06, .300WSM, .300winmag, 7x64, 9.3x62 etc are valid choices. .308 barely makes the cut, the creedmoor doesnt. simple as that.
      still waiting on a coherent argument on your part btw. substantiated by some numbers or facts. I have seen more boars shot than you have even seen in your entire life, I'll wager, so when I tell you this you can take it to the freaking bank.

    • @nathan22outdoors8
      @nathan22outdoors8 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@8asw8 you can't just look at energy when the creedmoor is only a 6.5mm bullet with alot smaller wound cavity than a 7.62mm 308 or 8mm 8x57, ontop of that your still wrong because with the energy. A Hornady 178gr ELD-X precision hunter has 2670 ft-lb, a Nosler 180gr 8x57 is 2599 ft-lb at the muzzle. Your over here probably comparing a 180gr 8x57 to a 150gr 308.

    7:30 oh come on.... the big recoil on a 6.5CM and you had to use a muzzle break? I have a tikka t3 in that caliber and it shoots almost like a .22lr.
    two shots were good-decent on placement, the one on the neck should have dropped it as well. the problem was not the shot placement or the muzzle break. the problem was the caliber first and foremost. 6.5CM is a great cartridge, I shoot it myself, but just not the right stuff for driven hunts. there is a great example why. use a 8x57IS or a .30-06 and that pig quits running after the first hit (any of those 3). with the creedmoor, it just keeps running as if it was a fleebite. That is ok in a spot and stalk or ambush kind of situation. but in a driven hunt, where other peoples dogs are concerned it's just not enough gun. and that should be the first thing in driven hunts. use enough gun.
