Lol I set my backyard on fire trying to start a fire in our pit this winter. It burned a little bit of our backyard. It was uncontrolled for a second before we put it out w our hose. But on the positive side of things the grass will grow back greener
I burned off a property I just bought had been neglected was about 14in tall what’s the next step for me. It appeared to be centipede before I burned it
what's up Brian this is Randy just North of you in Dalton Chatsworth area. I burnt mine for the first time last year and I will definitely be doing it again every year. I used a harbor freight torch that hooks to a propane tank. I have 22,000 square foot. we actually got a light snow this morning (super bowl Sunday) look pretty cool but I can see it's melting pretty fast.
A couple of things I like to add. You mentioned you get a earlier greenup but I got a 6-8 weeks more green time than I did from area I didn't burn. Also the black kind of disappears pretty fast, where it turns into like a brown look.. also the run off youre showing in your video, that's more from scalping not from burning. You really don't have nothing left when you burn. Also all that carbon that you normally would bag and take off your lawn it's going straight back into your soil which is a very good thing. Also weed seeds will be gone, burns them right up. I usually do my pre-emergent about a week after I burn. My neighbor came down asking me since I live on a hill that I would get a lot of runoff, with the Bermuda stallions and rhizomes are all down in that soil, it ain't going nowhere.
@@BermudaBrian only burned about 13,000 last time this year I plan on doing all 22. My Bermuda runs weird you know like I've got a lot of landscaping beds which helps me a lot.
I'm around you Randy and was thinking of burning. I did a small patch in the front yard about 10x10 today but I'm concerned about burning the green up. I have about 15,000 in the front and 8,000 in the back yard. I do have some green shoots so I figure I'll go ahead and scalp this weekend. It can definitely get out of hand quick if you aren't careful.
Did you get a Fall pre-emergent down? That's the important one. If you have a lot of weeds right now, you can do an app of post emergent and then do a pre-emergent. With the post emergent, make sure you put some type of surfactant like baby shampoo in pump sprayer to help chems stick to weeds. When done, either 1. Thoroughly clean the entire tank and hose OR preferably 2. mark sprayer as post emergent/weed killer and only use for that in future.
@@BermudaBrian I have not put anything down since I've lived here for almost 2 years now lol. And when I say bad I mean my entire yard is every kind of weed you could possibly think of surprisingly not that much crabgrass at the moment but everything else lives in my yard lol. waiting for it to warm up just a little bit consistently and then I'm going to go tackle it with something
I almost burned the house down yesterday. I guess a ember some how came out of the smoker. Half the back yard burned up. I covered it with hay, winter storm coming today. Will I have bermuda come March. It didn't go dormant until late November its been crazy warm until a couple weeks ago.
I always start as soon after I'm done to knock the soot down and wash out. Depending on where you are located, you will want to think about aeration and then hitting w a balanced fert (if your not going to do soil test). If you have done a soil test, you have your blueprint
Sorry.... It will grow on ANYTHING..... It depends on how much you have. Best to let it grow a little taller than usual, hit it with Roundup, wait a week, cut it and then wait a week, Roundup again.... 3-4 times will likely help BUT again, depending on how much you have, it will probably come back. Once Bermuda is established, it's VERY hard to kill off.
@@BermudaBrian OmG...that is so depressing...its literally the toughest grass i have ever met..that and johnsongrass....Will fire do anything? I will have my husband murder it with roundup...and then do the instructions you said...thanks!! Ugh!!!
Shit yes this is my favorite thing to do in springtime. I can hardly wait to do this to my yard. And it’s only one time of year I get to do it. Bermuda grass burn that sucker off goodbye
I have worked and worked on my lawn and to no avail still have weeds. Last year I put down Tuff Builders Plus Weed and Feed. Well I have never had onion in my yard and it's like I planted a garden of onions. They are every where. I almost had the dandelions gone but my neighbor must live the yellow look and they have blown all back in my yard. All that said my lawn is of centipede. I have almost thought about going to Bermuda grass. So what I think right now is burning my lawn off. This is how it was done in the 1950's , 60's and nit as much anymore. I can remember my grandparents sweeping there yard , and if a weed or a blade of grass came up they pulled it up. Then the lawn mowers came along. But I think burning your lawn kills all the weed seeds so , in my opinion you really would need a pre-emergent. Because you've killed the seeds by burning. Burning your lawn has been done for a long time and like you've said black soot is everywhere. Several questions , if I were to reseed my lawn after burning could I change it to Bermuda grass? And with centipede being so finicky, do you think it will kill it by burning ? I'm so sorry this is so long . I do apologize to everyone. I'm in the Upstate of South Carolina.
You would actually have to kill off the centipede in a couple sprayings to prevent it from coming back. The burning of grass and weeds effects the surface and not the subsurface.... So weed roots and seedling would still be there. The likelihood is that you timing of pre-emergent was off. Did you through my water the pre-emergent in? Is there a chance it got washed away? I would try spraying a post-emergent with some kind of surfactant like plain/original baby shampoo. Give that a few days and then cut your grass, apply a pre-emergent, and then water in. Bower, if you are going to seed any grass, wait 40 days from the time of your last round of pre-emergent. There will be a process that you'll want to follow. For sod, kill off centipede, til up the soil, add some amendments, rake in, and lay sod. Also, have a soil test done..... See what's going on in soil .... The weed problem may be there. Soil could be locked up w nutrients.....
@@BermudaBrian Thank you for your reply. It's I'm just over centipede. It doesn't like to be walked on , drove over you name. Bermuda , is a great looking grass. If you just keep it cut at one height . I was kinda thinking someone put onion seeds in the bag of Scott's. Thank you again .
Be careful burning any grass this late in the season. You could damage your turf. I'm assuming this is Bermuda you are going to burn. If it's not Bermuda, don't burn it. You have a briar weed.... It's not a vine... Right? you can use formulas of Dicamba, 2, 4D, or MCPP. Google those or look them up in up at: www.domyown.com You may have to do multiple applications. Hope that helps!
Advice is good but dont be so dramatic. Fire wont cross a water line. Drench an line using yiur hose and the fire wont cross if its just grass. The soot is only nasty while its burning. 2 rains and the soot is gone. Mulch mow on a scalp setti g after the burn (wear mask) to knock all the soot out and one rain it will look superb (no black)
I did it last year and the lawn is looking amazing
What kind of fertilizer should I use
To push new growth after a burn? A high Nitrogen fertilizer. Water it in thoroughly
Thanks for the help
Should I dethatch/scarify by lawn before burning the grass to make sure all the thatch is burnt?
Nevermind, you answered my question at 3:50 lol.
Sorry! Just seeing this. Been on vacation w the family. Hope video helps!

I take it that burning is geared toward warm season grasses? Took too long to get my KBG up and going. 😆

As many weeds as I have in my yard it might be best that I just completely burn my yard and start over. I'm gonna try to make it better this year

Ahhhh. Yeah. Start over. Use a starter fert that has weed control.... Scotts has one. Don't put any pre-emergent down or your seed won't come up.
Will it help kill perennial? Will it kill the grass? Do you have to re-seed?

Fire clicker like you start a grill with. The grass is so dry, it lights up and will burn a lawn off in no time

Is right now still a great time to burn my yard or I’m I to late? I’m in Texas and everything is just beginning to bloom.
Look for a green haze across your lawn. Water landscaping and borderlines down and go for it. Keep a hose in hand.

If it's that much w weeds, glypho it and start over. Easiest way.
Can you do it too early? I mean, it goes dormant in November. As long as you burn it while it's still brown, you should be ok, right?
That's what I'm wanting to know too.
Yeah... Technically you can and you could have winter kill off from roots freezing. The dormant canopy insulates the roots
