      I did that too a few years ago in my backyard using one of those weed torches. Had large sections of nutsedge in the yard and fire was on the menu.

    Man just earlier this year i seeded my yard with tall fescue. Pete being the inspiration for it. Later the same year he’s burning down his back plot of beautiful fescue.. it’s been a strange year 😂. Keep rocking Pete!

    In the future start the burn from the location you want the most control at instead of going toward it, you can also start the fire from all sides and have it burn toward itself so that it can not burn anywhere else.

    There we go Pete!! Reminded me of burning off the wheat fields when I was young. With the direction the wind looked to be blowing that long stuff would have burnt good. I use fire on my Bermuda before it wakes up in the spring and it always comes in fresh.

    • @PatrickHealy

      What do you do with it after your burn it? Just water it down into the roots?

  • @traywynn9605

    I burned my old Bermuda yard at my old house a few years ago in the late winter when it was still dormant. Filled a backpack sprayer up with water and just sprayed down where I didn’t want the fire to reach. Had a lot of old thatch and it took care of all of it. My yard turned green 3 or 4 weeks before everyone else’s. I got pics but TH-cam won’t let me post it. Great idea Pete.

  • @djanes302
    @djanes302 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    A good idea to have on hand is a leaf blower. They work great for putting out grass fires. Much quicker than water. Good idea to use both but leaf blower is great to keep it away from areas you don't want burned. Learned that watching a rural county firefighter pull up and handle a whole grass fire on his own with a backpack blower. He said its the best thing for grass fires.

  • @frankc1430
    @frankc1430 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    I'm glad to see you took my advice! I did this to my lawn when I renovated it. Yeah my neighbor said I was kind of goofy but I watch the farmers do it to their crops all the time. It also adds Ash into your soil.

    • @Mityob67
      @Mityob67 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey Frank. So how'd the lawn turn out after the burn-off? Did you amend the soil prior to planting or just aerate and seed as usual?

    • @frankc1430
      @frankc1430 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@Mityob67 I just aerated and Seed. It turned out okay but I had rain wash out a couple times. I really didn't do any amending of the soil. If I was to do it again I probably wouldn't Burn It Down. Only reason why I say that is because I had a couple rain washouts and it was hard to try and keep the seed in the ground. At least if you had some grass it would probably keep the seed from washing out easily. But I have a lot of clay so the ground doesn't really absorb well and anything on top just gets washed off.

    That was a good controlled burn there Pete! My company burned off some old fields that were 6ft high in grass and cane for a client, and when the wind picked up, 150ac burned to a crisp in 10min. A "backing fire" like you had where it creeps along does a way better job at consuming material than one that blows across the landscape. Looking forward to your KBG!

  • @aradoran
    @aradoran 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Crazy Pete is at it again.
    I've burned our dormant bermuda the last 3 or 4 springs. You actually want the slow burn because it burns more completely. I always burn on a day with just the slightest breeze and burn from the downwind side, which purposely gets it to burn slow because the wind is pushing back against the flame.
    Nice work Pete.

    That was incredible to watch. This might make for an interesting portion to a video...I've heard that ash from a burn will raise the pH of the soil. So you might use your pH meter to measure the pH of straight water in a container and then add some of the new burned soil and it's ash, mix and remeasure. Could also compare to nonburned soil mixed in water. Not sure if that will work to accurately measure the affect but I've heard it can raise soil pH by 40%.

    Awesome result Pete. Can I suggest you still rotary hoe / till that ground up, rake over & over to remove all of below ground thatch etc. when all of that is removed, then apply your new soil, rotary hoe again to blend old & new soil then grade your levels. The worst thing you could do would be to not do this & create ‘layers’ within your soil profile. It would be such as shame after going to all this trouble.
    Anyway, cheers mate 👍🏻🏝🇦🇺😎

    • @AW-yv9sq
      @AW-yv9sq 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I’ve was told years ago (it may be incorrect)that tilling disturbs the natural soil structure and harms the organisms that live in those layers. Obviously if you have no real topsoil/organic matter there is no choice. Maybe that’s wrong. Are you saying you don’t want to just bury your original topsoil?

    I absolutely hate dead lawn debris when I do a reno. Thought of this before but regs prohibit this in most of my areas. I'm now experimenting with a heavy app of D-thatch mixed in my roundup to get the dead digesting. Dead lawn debris is the most time consuming part of most of my reno's.
