Holy shit this was actually so helpful. I didn't grow up playing hockey and am trying to learn by playing adult pickup and beer league, but as nice as most folks are, this is the kind of breakdown you really need to learn fundamentals that you rarely get if you didn't play as a kid under a coach (or have a family member to teach you.) So very, VERY invaluable. Thank you so much Coach J.
I second this!! I just got back from a morning stick and puck session and it's so discouraging seeing all these other guys sniping absolute rockets at the net. Coach Jeremy is that coach we didn't have growing up. I'm 23 just getting started playing ice hockey. I can't wait to use these tips next time I'm at the rink. My shots are muffins right now
I think I have to memorize that bit at 03:40 and use it as a mantra until it sinks into my bones and muscle memory. 😄Thanks for that video, it is really helpful as I'm doing exactly the same errors that you talk about in the beginning. 👍
Hey Jeremy thanks a lot for the video. Its always good to be reminded of getting back to the basics. Sometimes in the heat of the moment we get back to bad habits. I am 64 years old and I still play street hockey down at the local roller rink. And I also play roller hockey and ice hockey. There are similarities to the three but there are also some differences I find. Mainly getting a feel of the puck on stick. it's a bit of a challenge transitioning from one to the other. But practicing can make a world of difference. I just want to say that I love your videos. I have Incorporated many of the advice that I've learned.
ya ought to try using what us old timers used, wood stick almost no flex. lol like using an oak tree. i have never used one of thos fancy expensive carbon sticks. Of course i havent played in 25 years either. lol
my wrist shot or ANY shot in fact sucks cause i just dont shoot enough, on paper i know the steps to shoot but only time i have to practice is the 5 minutes of warmups during pickup games, and during the actual game i never shoot i just try to set other people up cause i know they have a higher chance of scoring
Get a shooter board and if you have a back yard shoot them out there, if you're in an apartment get foam pucks to work on your form, stick flexion, and follow through.
this is an awesome video Jeremy, even as someone who’s been playing for 5+ years getting that extra power/speed on my shots is still difficult for me. quick tips like this are gonna get me on top of my game! 🔥
I've played for over 30 years, I still look up tips and tricks. The game is always evolving, I used to use a really heavy flex now I'm down to a very whippy stick and absolutely love it.
about 75% way through the video and I had to pause to say thank you for the editing style and what not of the video, it's to the point...thank you for respecting my time, like and subscribe inbound...
Bend your knees Bring puck between your legs before you shoot, at the midpoint between your legs, or slightly in front of the midpoint Lower your bottom hand down the stick Open your stick blade a bit when you follow through and point at the target Practice practice practice
I've got one more I learned from Brent Severyn. Bring your hands closer together. It makes it more difficult but also allows you to shoot the puck way harder.
This is next level and depends on how strong your forearms are, but basic physics tells you this is the way. When doing this you need less backlift, catches goalies out.
Do you know if colt hockey is still making sticks, they have not been on social media since 2018 but there website is still functional and selling sticks.
It’s called Ultrabase. Great as a concrete alternative and basically any sport, pucks slide on it, but not as well as smoother surfaces. This has a bit of grip to it
Is it weird that one of my sticks I have a decent shot with and my other stick my shot is horrible? The stick of the shot that's horrible is slightly shorter than the other one
Do you have any tips for coaching a player who does the mechanics properly but just doesn't seem to put enough force into their shot to get that power? The flex is appropriate their form is good, they have enough strength to create the lever action, but they just don't get that explosive quick twitch muscle action to give their shot some pop. Struggling to find a good way to teach someone to be not so timid with their shot. A good shot seems to be a controlled but aggressively explosive motion and I'm not sure how to teach someone to be more agressive to get the shot to have more power other than just saying don't be afraid to get angry with it but that doesn't seem to be working
@@SgtPepperakaYou ok, I ask because with young players it can be a bit harder. At 40 it’s usually just a lack or practice. Once you get the fundamentals it still takes time to get the right rhythm, timing, and quickness. Those will improve with every training session. To see what I mean just try it yourself. Shoot a few pucks, but do it with the wrong handed stick. You know exactly what to do, but it will take a lot of practice to program the muscles.
Don't forget the heal of the blade is the best place to start the puck, all that flex and power is right there, you wouldn't be firing slappers off the toe. Roll the puck around the blade and finish pointing where you're aiming, those corners will be easy to hit.
@@alexpayne1364 They pull it to the heel when snapping, that's what I used to do. But the power comes from the flex in the shaft, if you're shooting the puck off the toe you'll always get some give in the blade, hence losing power.
@@mdipltd7404 most still snap/ shoot it off closer to the middle or the toe. Its mechanically harder to shoot the puck off the heel. Thr myth of generating more power off the heel bothe the blade and shaft are gonna accelerate the same because well there attached
@@alexpayne1364 That maybe because of new materials that form the blade being stronger than they used to be, 25 yrs ago there was give and flex in blades from heel to toe. But I liked my theory then and so did my teammates, the opposing goalies didn’t. Also they can’t be passing off the toe, rolling it heel to toe allows those lovely flat floaters to the tape. I wonder whether you mean the puck leaves the stick off the toe, but it still travels along the blade. When a puck is just tapped with the blade and not caressed it’s just a Chippy little pass. When caressed it can be fired far more accurately at pace.
@@mdipltd7404 yea stick technology has improved and still is improving now and shooting has also changed then it used to like the style Bedard and Matthews have adopted or like Laine and Pettersson the new style of shooting seems to increase power and the quickness of the puck off the stick. Yes back then that style of heel shooting was the way but now its adapted
Me who hasn't played hockey since I was little but still watching Coach Jeremy's tips and tricks like I'm trying to go to the NHL tomorrow

Awesome videos Coach Jeremy! Going to try and up my Intramural/ pickup games w/ these
What song is used at 1:54 by the way?
Very Informative video and Not boring. Excellent teaching video. Thank you.
Awesome video. Clear concise, great way to communicate.
Great video Jeremy!

Conveniently showcasing the CCM Jetspeed FT5 Pro stick as well :)

We were using carbon 30 yrs ago, Easton. I still think the Vic' 4050's and 5000's were better than carbon's, killing goalies with those things.
A quick suggestion for another shot video, explain the different stick kick types and what you can expect for each when shooting.

What do you use for your floor?
Hey Jeremy, I’ve got my wrist shot and snapper pretty much solid but I need help getting air on my clappers, any tips?
Bend your knees
Bring puck between your legs before you shoot, at the midpoint between your legs, or slightly in front of the midpoint
Lower your bottom hand down the stick
Open your stick blade a bit when you follow through and point at the target
Practice practice practice
Drop your back leg lower when taking the shot. The lower it goes the higher your shot will go.
Thanks guys I see matthews did these when he roofed it will be practicing soon
what are those tiles?
Where do I get those ice pads for outside

My coach always say to have my bottom hand under my head like in line with my head
Do these tips still work for inside Leg shooting?
💯

Not at all. Anything from a change in the height, the lie, the curve, or flex can affect your shot.
Also if the stick is old it can have lost a lot of whip in it due to microfractures
Sticks get worse as you use them
