Poor Vincent. I mean sam didnt know what was going on he had thankfully as a kidnapped child a good life so far. Vincent had to live with the guilt he felt & the broken sad family .
And, in reality, a lot of families/marriages wouldn't have survived that. Couples break up all the time when a baby or child dies even when it's neither parent's fault.
I remember watching this movie with my mom back in 1999 when it first premiered. And I remember my mom saying something along the lines of what you just said. She said if she were in that situation she would have just let the boy alone and let him keep living with the family he has come to know as his family. Instead of trying to reintegrate him into the family he was supposed to grow up with. But yeah this movie would have had a whole different feeling if Ben (or Sam) was being abused by his kidnapped family.
I know right Ben/sam at least lived with a loving father and doesn't remember anything while Vincent blamed himself for his brother's kidnapping and carried that guilt for years, not to mention his parents' neglect and lack of understanding of his feelings until he became a troubled teenager, yet he still loves and protects his little brother.
wanna know something crazy. i use to do cc work at the community center. parents would drop their kids off at the play structres and LEAVE. assuming the other parents wpuld watch out for them. wtf!
i get where both parties are coming from but i still feel sorry for George. He's alone in his house now..although of course he can still visit. still, i feel bad for him.
Rachael Jacobs I saw the movie first and liked it a lot, and though I typically like books better than their movies (no matter what order I encounter them), I was not impressed by the book at all.
As per Wikipedia: At the end of the novel, many conflicts remain unresolved. Pat still has problems loving his sons: Ben because he can not relate to his personality and Vincent because he does not connect his teenage rebellion and cynicism to nine years of bad parenting. Beth has regained her position in the family as an equal parent, but Ben and Vincent's emotional scars may require years of intense therapy.
Angela Smith that’s so neat I accidentally in a good way went to the movie my friend at the time wanted me to watch with her at the movie Austin powers I said no so I went to a different movie in the theater so that’s how I came across this movie I am si glad I did it’s one of my favorites and never looked back.
I know what you mean. It would be more sad for obvious reasons but also less sad in a way because Ben/Sam reuniting with his biological family would have been much happier. The fact that he was raised by such a loving father meant that Sam wasn't even that happy to go back to them. Even this ending made me sad because I felt so bad for George (though I assume he'll continue to have a relationship with Sam).
@@gerdtt79 any sane person would never steal a baby, and even then you'd return them when you saw their grieving parents on TV. Also, sane people who can't have children biologically will know that their is a thing called ADOPTION, and tons of children need loving/stable homes.

Jonathan Jackson is such a good actor.
I feel bad for him carrying this guilt all these years.
I hate that he used that guilt into being rebellious but I understand he was just a kid he didn’t know any better
This would have been a very different story if Ben/Sam had been mistreated after being kidnapped rather than spending those years in a loving family.
