      Glad I saw this comment, cause I've been wondering if anyone else had shared the thought. It's that Bob Ross flair, for sure, and a unique approach to the subject that no one else has. Very matter of fact, straight forward, and straight to the point. It's perfectly concise, with a wealth of information start to finish. I discovered this channel about a week ago and have gotten totally hooked on it.

    I'm so glad I found your channel a while ago. You make by far the best tutorials for product photography. Might not match what you do but I would like to see what you would do shooting a car. Keep up the great work man.

    • @sohilh.m.5958
      @sohilh.m.5958 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Most important lighting theory for cars (or any reflective surface) is to light what the car sees, not the car itself.
      That's why most cars are shot at dusk in a scenic location -- the car looks great and so does the smooth gradients of the scene reflecting on the car.
      Same technique can be practiced in the studio w/ a miniature car.

    • @adamw2785
      @adamw2785 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      A tip I was given, even though I don't shoot cars, is if you are shooting the interior, drape a white bedsheet over the vehicle, so it blocks all the windows, and gives you a soft white light from outside.

  • @MuertoInc
    @MuertoInc 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Awesome video. Only thing I noticed is that the shadow does not drop in the way the light supposedly hit the subject. If it was composed as a front lit image, shadows drop behind the subject, not under or front.
    Thank you for the tutorial.

  • @BlueMonkey
    @BlueMonkey 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Absolutely love your channel. Such a variety of products and the appropriate lighting set-ups to accompany them.
    If you're ever looking for feedback, one thing I would mention is to set your voice recording to mono instead of stereo for when you're demonstrating the compositing stage. I can slightly hear your voice creating a 'spinning' effect in my ears from the smallest change to your voice direction. Mono would remove that so your voice is nice and central at all times in both ears. Super nit picky but might be helpful.
    Keep up this amazing work!

    • @workphlo
      @workphlo  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Blue Monkey! Thanks as always my friend, it's our pleasure.

  • @jongrall
    @jongrall 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    That was some pretty clever masking you did there! I like the idea of being able to use a single speedlight for product shots and then compositing multiple shots from different lighting positions using layers and the lighten blend mode. Very clever. Overall though, this seems light a lot of work in post vs. just lighting it well in the first place, and might not scale to a large number of items. Still, a neat technique if you're on a budget, have limited space & equipment, as long as you have mad Photoshop skills!

    • @workphlo
      @workphlo  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Jon, thanks! I agree, there are pros and cons to both. The deeper I dive into the minimal/composite style shooting, the more side-effects like the optional drop-shadow capabilities I keep running into. It's motivating! :)

    I'm have a hard time to follow this, your base photo is nice black and white, is it tweaked a little in Lightroom ? mine is not that black.
    Maybe my camera settings and flash power is wrong, what was yours on ?

    • @workphlo
      @workphlo  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Kent, as I mention in the post-production you need to make sure that frame is completely contrasted black and white. If your silhouette is not dark enough make sure that your flash power is not too high for that exposure, and mitigate spill light around the room (the dark card helps this as well) then crush the black levels in post!
      Best of luck my friend, thanks for watching.

    Do you do lots of composites when you do this professionally, or do you try and get it right the first time in camera, and then maybe do some extra photos in case you need to composite some things?
    Also, a tip from another video I saw. If you place the object on top of a sheet of clear plexiglass/acrylic, using side clamps to hold the sheet. Then put a white reflector behind it, so you can see the reflector above and below the plexiglass, and then bounce a flash off of it, it will completely isolate your object. Check it out > th-cam.com/video/TCjOujOg8TA/w-d-xo.html

    • @workphlo
      @workphlo  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Adam, I always try to satisfy a bulk of the lighting challenges in one "main exposure" and then leave anything to compositing that is necessary. Sometimes a composite is necessary for lack of additional lights, or sometimes it's to cheat reality and do something clever.
      Either way, I make sure it is pre-meditated. :) Thx for the vid!
