This is some of the best musicianship I have ever heard. Ever. And I'm not good enough to completely grasp just HOW good they are! I cannot think of any other group that uses such complicated rhythms and changes. The dynamics. The vocals. They all possess a level of mastery that is rarely found. The artistic thoughts they have in any given moment come out of their instrument instantly. Great reaction to a stellar performance!

I'm amazed at the fact that I've played this song almost every day for the past year and I'm not sick of it yet. It has me in quite the chokehold. Everyone is amazing in their respective roles and parts. BUT THAT BASS, THOUGH!!! I really don't think there's much Henrik can't do or any style he can't play. He'd probably disagree with that, as he often talks about stuff he doesn't think he's good enough at and I'm just over here like "dude, you're a wizard". One of the other things I love about him is his level of chill when he plays. He may pace back and forth on stage, and maybe a slight head bang here and there, but for the most part, he's chillin'. He makes it look so easy. I love that about him.

Right there with you, Jamila! I've listened to "Next To You" HUNDREDS of times since it dropped two years ago and I've yet to grow tired of it. I continually marvel at Henrik's bass playing and how incredibly in-sync it is with Aron's drumming. It's like they're psychically connected!

Jamila, totally agree, that song is so endlessly listenable…. And Henrik playing chill, yeah it’s uncanny especially when he’s rippin off those crazy runs and riffs. I think it might have to do with hours and hours of practising and technically being on top of his game, whether what he believes (that he sucks in so many ways) is true or not ;) It sure helps being relaxed when playing fast.
Yeah, he’s one of the world’s most humble and musical bass players, I reckon.

@@DougRawady When they were in college, they used to practice together for 5-6 hours/night, 5-6 days a week. They were legendary for their insanely disciplined routines of picking two new grooves every week, and practicing each of them 3 x 30 minutes every day they practiced together. I listened to a Swedish podcast, where they said they took turns being the one who had to get up early on Mondays, when the new practice room booking sheets for the week came up (it was paper based back then), and book them their 3 allowed hours each, back to back, for the whole week. The interviewer, who went to college with them, said that when he came to book, there were always 6 hr slots booked for them, and it was always the same handwriting booking for both of them that week. 😂 I guess that kind of practicing does tend to get you very well synced to each other. 😊

The drummer is giving me all kinds of Stuart Copeland vibes. Just such a rich and vibrant tapestry of sounds happening in this song. I'm sold. This immediately made my playlist. What's most impressive is that as crazy and wild as they're getting, it never felt show-off-ey or corny. Does that make sense? It never felt forced. Delightful reaction! :D
That choir is indeed just them. Or actually, just Jonah. Henrik (the bass player) said the following about writing Next To You, in an interview in BassMagazine:
"That song took forever to write. Aron and I wrote the chorus in 2016. We found it in a drawer and tried a bunch of new verses with it until we got the right one. Then at the last minute, Aron wrote the gospel choir parts. He sent a very funny demo in which he marked where all the different gospel parts come in and what kind of voice they had. When Jonah recorded them, he had a chalkboard with all the different characters in the choir, and he distorted his voice to match each character and so none of them would sound like him. The groove has our typical, swung-funk, triplet feel, but the key is the Bootsy funk formula of having a heavy one to make all the subdivisions after it work. Aron wrote the chorus bass line, which is keyboard bass-like, and it worked best with a combination of fingers and slapping."
If you want to read the whole interview, which gives a wonderful insight into their process and the creation of the EP Phoenix, just search for "Henrik Linder Songified", and it should pop right up. :)

Nice. i'll mention a couple of things that undoubtably will get mentioned a few times but those of us lucky enough to have been on the DLoops train for a little while are very fond of the Loops canon. First off all the vocals were done by Jonah, while much of the vocal arrangements came courtesy of Aron the drummer. The credits at the end while supplying a bevy of information, frequently have little demos of the bands quirky, yet wonderful sense of humor. I was a drummer for fifteen years and I feel like Aron consistently has one of the best snare sounds ever. All the songs you have lined up are great. Recently I've really been enjoying one of their older songs -"Wake Me Up"-. It starts in one really nice spot and ends with...well you'll just have to give it a listen. Great work and thanks!

This reaction was as joyful as this piece 😊 and what gets me is how I’m discovering new things every time I’m listening through someone else’s ears… I had this piece on repeat on my playlist, along with all the other DL stuff ;)
Just loved how you picked up on the little sounds and sound effects, on all the technical stuff going on in there (honestly, to me this starts feeling like a masterpiece already after the first few seconds!), as well as reacting straight out of the middle of your heart…
This piece, to me, is the perfect combination and delivery of flawless technical mastery (love the video visuals itself as well!) and emotional content…
Judging from other comments, there is a lot of gospel going on in there. I always thought that the sound gets brighter with every chorus, and really starts brightening up towards the end and that climax, -not just modulation-wise but also sound scape-wise, - it always feels as though the heavens are opening up in the best possible way…. 😊
Your comments “this is pure joy”, “he’s plucking my soul”, “dude can sing”, lol!
That drummer, Aron, to me he always sings, if that is the highest compliment to any drummer… yes, he adds colour to absolutely everything, whilst providing such drive - in the pocket, on fire whilst playing with so much engagement, subtlety and beauty.
Henrik, he sings!, whilst being super percussive and virtuosic. And again, always the right thing at the right time, what can you say…
Jonah? Forget it. The dude not only can sing (btw, he did all the of the backing vocals ;) but also harmonize and play those keys, holy….!
All three seem to be on an equal footing when it comes to mastery of their skills and also to crafting those pieces together, which I think is always the case with Dirty Loops… (as an aside, someone recently said that Aron, the drummer, had a hand in writing that very rhythmical chorus melody…)
This piece, to me, is like a happy tornado: it sucks you in and then spits you out at the other end, dazed, confused and totally happy 😃
Absolutely CAN’T wait for you to do “Work Shit Out”! 👍🔥👍

Lol! Love this comment! "Happy tornado" is a great description, (except now I'm picturing all the characters in The Wizard Of Oz being flung out of a Dirty Loops tornado, including the flying monkeys & the wicked witch), which of course would have drastically changed the whole plot. I'm taking this opportunity to thank you for your delightful comment as part of my ongoing effort to deter my frantic, happy brain from its apparent mission to drive me crazy with imagery that would have surely changed the course of cinematic history. Next up, Work Shit Out! Apropos, yes? 😉🤔😂

Every damn song is just locked, and their caliber, both individually and expressed within the band, are mind blowing. I think that the drummer actually plays the sample of the "inverted snare drum" with his left hand on the 1's and 3's.

    • @SteveOGRock
      @SteveOGRock  2 ปีที่แล้ว

Hmm. That’s not beyond the realm of possibility, but looking at it again I think he’s just triggering some other rhythmic tones with his left hand. I do think the snare lead-in is done in post-production. But you’re right that in theory this could be triggered. You’d want to be rock solid with your timing though otherwise there might be a gap between the end of that sound and the hit of your snare if you lag which would be jarring.
