As a South African, I always struggle with this. Americans killing our Big 5. There always seems to be a justified reason such as overpopulation or the funds going to conservation. Are elephants really overpopulated? Do all the funds really go to conservation? Or do we just convince ourselves otherwise? I'm sure the animal won't go to waste, but elephants are one of the most intelligent animals on earth and it sucks seeing one being shot in the head. Witnessing an elephant's life extinguished, only to be replaced by a callous grin for a trophy, leaves a bitter taste of despair.

      >"As a South African, I always struggle with this."
I don't, and no one actually cares about your nationality to begin with.
      >"Americans killing our Big 5."
Lol, I'm sorry. YOUR Big 5? Says who? How do they all belong to you? This isn't even in the same country.
      >"There always seems to be a justified reason such as overpopulation or the funds going to conservation."
And they're both correct, whether you like it or not.
      >"Are elephants really overpopulated?"
      In Botswana, yes.
      >"Do all the funds really go to conservation."
The funds go both to conversation and community upliftment, yes.
      >"Or do we just convince ourselves otherwise?"
Who is we? The researchers on the ground? They didn't "convince" themselves, they made a conclusion based on their own analysis. Game departments base their management practices off of said analysis.
      >"I'm sure the animal won't go to waste, but elephants are one of the most intelligent animals on earth and it sucks seeing one being shot in the head"
This isn't an argument, this is an appeal to emotion. It has no place in a logical discussion.
      >"Witnessing an elephant's life extinguished, only to be replaced by a callous grin for a trophy, leaves a bitter taste of despair."
Spoken like a true South African, total cringe. No one's impressed.

Just do a quick Google search and you will find how many peoples are killed every year by elephants. These are not pet elephants bro they do a lot of harm to crop fields, live stocks etc. And they can destroy forests. I live in Bangladesh and in hill tracks of Chittagong there are a lot of Indian elephants. Though not as big as african bush elephants these elephants every year cause considerable damage to villages there. But unfortunately Big game hunting is not permited in my country. And one more thing, hunting in the video is controlled hunting. And money spend by these hunters are helping to save these elephant. Coz this money helps their government to stop illegal poaching.
So bro next time before you decide to be a complete idiot by commenting such things, atleast make sure you know what you are talking about... Fool

It certainly isn't easy to hunt such big and dangerous animals, and these many couch sitting critics condemning hunting and hunters as reckless, murderous swine driving all species to extinction , etc, are for the most part a bunch of ignorant people! In the first place are elephants in specifically Botswana, Namibia, Zimbabwe, and South Africa all but on the verge of extinction!! On the contrary, there are areas where local communities' very existence is under threat due to an enormous overpopulation of elephants! Are you even aware of that? These herds of elephant destroy habitats by breaking and destroying trees by the thousands! I have grown up here, and have witnessed in person a herd of 5-600 elephants in the north of Namibia! Do you have any idea what that looks like? It is extremely scary! Where is Africa supposed to go with all these animals if their numbers cannot be controlled by selective hunting? As one African minister recently said: maybe we should send 20000 elephants to Europe and see how they deal with that!!

I find it revolting, and I have no problem shooting animals for food and protection of forests/agriculture. I just hope there's an element of game control here, too, and they don't just die as an expensive hobby for some bored Texan housewife. (Also, the elephants basically just stand there. Scent blocking clothing is ok if you care for it correctly. It needs to be washed in special scent free detergent, sealed in bags, and stored in a cool place when it isn’t being used.
But, even with that, there’s plenty coming off you deer can smell easily, especially your breath. I own a lot of very expensive camo, kuiu, First Light, etc. Including scentlok stuff, and I’ve definitely been winded while using it. Pretty much neocolonialism and glorified white saviorism.
“Local and Indigenous” Africans have been doing just fine living with lions, elephants and other supposedly “dangerous” megafauna for millennia before European colonizers came in, drove these magnificent beasts close to extinction due to uncontrolled sport-hunting, and then collectively said “whoops!” and then drove the Indigenous populations out of their traditional homelands just for the sake of these game reserves and national parks (same scenario as the U.S. government driving away Indigenous tribes for our own national parks like in Yellowstone for example), plus erasing thousands of generations-worth of Indigenous knowledge of how they lived with these animals to begin with, so much so that now they’re solely dependent on these white saviors with guns for *everything*, ironically the very thing that erased their knowledge of sustainable living and independence in the first place, and even then some of the locals hired by these hunting outfitters (“but it produces JOBS!!!”) actually have regret over foreign white dudes shooting their own natural heritage just for the sake of bullshit “sustainable use”, even though SCI, Dallas Safari Club and all Africans bought into this era of exploitation say they’re all either “pests” or “dangerous nuisances” to begin with:
      www.ecologicalcitizen.net/pdfs/epub-080.pdf
But yes, whenever all these folks and corporations say “facts over emotions”, they just mean thinking only a certain amount of “logic and reason”; too much so and then you’ll realize: damn, this shit really is “neocolonialist”.

Damien, are you saying the elephant “ had to go” because it was older, kinda like your parents or grandparents, they deserve death bc they are old? If you don’t have a minute to look up statistics I just copied this from Google.
By 1900 this had fallen to around 10 million elephants and by 1979 down to 1.3 million. There was a rapid decline in population size over the 1970s and 1980s such that by the mid-1990s numbers had fallen below 300,000. 20,000 elephants are killed yearly,
Not for food but for personal enjoyment. Safe management would be protection not extinction. I’m not wanting to sound rude, I’m just trying to give you facts. Do you know the “cute” huntress went on to kill a docile grass eating giraffe that she proudly posed next to the dead animal. I hope you are a respectful hunter for food not a dead head to hang in your house.

I wonder how many pounds of meat an elephant gives to the natives? It will feed a lot of people.

Wahidulislam…isn’t that like someone shooting your grandparents because they’re old and defenseless. The elephant was standing still, like a large paper target! A 5 year old child could accomplish that.

The elephant didn't have a gun and I obviously don't agree with anyone praising themselves for what she did sleep well madam maybe next time it will be your turn!!

How could the elephant have had a gun anyway? Is there some obscure anthropomorphic elephant species out there that you just happen to know about, genius?

What an asinine point to make. Would it’s death have been any kinder if nature had run its course? What do you think happens to old bull elephants? They go curl up under a tree & die in their sleep? Give me a break. A quick double tap is the best death any elephant can ever hope for out in the Bush, because the alternative is lions.

How anyone could shoot an elefant is beyond me completely... some egotrip of a human being... instead of apreciating the view of the elefant... and feel their remarkable soul... so much pure than any human.... and the loss of any elefant endangers their survival..so thoughtless.

Also: Terrible shooting. She pops 2 random shots in the general direction of the big grey thing and he kills it with the final shot.."She got him in the neck" ... yeah right... you did, and that's why they congratulated you first. "Hunting as a service" - ridiculous. You'd never get invited to a hunt again in the civilised parts of Europe.
