Based on you having commented 8 months ago, that being the summer of '12, older trains were being used on the A to take advantage of the long outdoor runs to allow the really old air conditioning units to take a breather from being stuck on the (completely and boiling hot underground) C. The Q22 is also nowhere near the busiest line and does not require long bendy buses.
Update: All 5 boroughs of NYC have at least one Select Bus route, most of which use either XD60s or post-2016 LFSAs. Some are to be rerouted because of the ongoing bus Redesign and the Metrocard is slowly phasing out in favor of the new OMNY.
Once upon a time NYC had dedicated lanes for transit. They were trolleys. It seems like the city is reaching back into the past. Some boneheaded politicians decided that trolleys were bad and that buses were the way to go. So they paved over the tracks and bought in buses which belched out pollution. Way to go. I hope those responsible don't rest in their graves.
Once there was a southbound M15 SBS bus that was running regular, although after East 79th Street, it was running local. It was stopping at 75th Street, 70th Street, & even 63rd Street.
Traffic cops to give $100 tickets when you don't have the paper receipt. It's a scam when there's a metrocard machine in the bus, but if you use this method of paying, you are guaranteed a ticket violation when the traffic cops board the bus.
The fare inspectors are usually Police Officers. How you will know when Fare Inspectors are going to check for receipts is when a bus appears at the stop and you see a bunch of Police Officers at the stop, and they get on the bus. They check for receipts.
Manhttn & Bx are the first ones to get these articulated buses, why is the Rockaways & most of Queens always the last ones to get updated technology & service? The MTA fills our Q22 buses with ads bragging about the improvements to their systems but we don't see it in the Rockaways, it's a shame that the MTA replaces the J trains with new R160 trains & they give the old R42 to the A line. The A is the worst in the city, it comes by every 15 to 20 minutes & the commute itself to Far Rock is long.
It was very fast. But as a tourist, I did not know that unlike a regular bus, you could not simply board and swipe your metro card. I guess the reason you have to pay in advance at a machine is to save time at bus stops.
yea i know for some reason ppl in Manhattan dont know about this sbs and the bronx had it already for years now and we love it works fine here i use is all the time but just like we all know ppl dont travel to the bronx, so they think this is the first time the MTA done this and its old news now for ppl in the bronx you should see how lost they are
Well you don't know what you're missing. Buses now have cushioned, reclining chairs with cable and surround sound. They serve refreshments every 10 blocks. On weekends after midnight you can get a lap dance. It's just wonderful riding the bus. We missed you. Come on back.
Quick question. What’s the protocol for when the machines run out of paper? It’s happened to me a few times already. I asked the driver and he said I should call 511?? How’s that going to help me with the ride I just purchased but can’t prove?
Suinda San Juan There are two machines and if one of them runs out of paper, then the machine should say out of service. If that isn’t the case, then I don’t know what the hell they are doing. OMNY should help simplify this by moving the payment back on the bus, but at both doors. Ideally, at major transfer hubs, I would recommend off board fare collection using smaller machines.
So when is the select bus service gonna hit Queens? Glad it's in my hometown of the Bronx but, Queens needs them most epically the buses that goto JFK like the Q10, Q3, and Q6. While your at it MTA bring the SBS to the Q8!
I heard from the MTA, that they are also going to have another sbs service in Queens , the Q25 Limited is going to become Q25 sbs. There is going to be local service on the Q25. The Q20a/Q20b will provide local service for the Q44 sbs.
The Q53/Q52 are now SBS and it's awesome. Instead of having to wait 5 mins at each stop for everyone to pay it just leaves in about 1 minute and it's very fast.
Glitch94 The Q10 May be an SBS Line in the future. The Q8, not really. In addition, the Q5 in SE Queens was to be an SBS Route, but was scrapped in 2006 due to parking concerns. The corridor is being considered again as part of a new study.
@@TheRailLeaguer I thought Shade Jay said that they will get rid of SBS and that you will be able to get on any door you want. Even the latest buses don't have the SBS Decals.
Dream Journal Projects SBS will become the new LIMITED service, just with all door boarding. The branding will not go away as well. I will double check the plans for OMNY and SBS and provide updates as things go along.
A lot of people farebeat on the M35 so maybe that route should get SBS treatment, so that when fare inspectors show up, the farebeaters can get punished for farebeating.
MP.4 Channel You don’t need SBS on the M35. Once the new fare system for the regular buses are in place, and the MTA has all-door boarding, then there should be fare inspectors at random places along the route, similar to San Francisco’s method of fare inspection.
I was there a couple of years ago and I kept asking myself what's to stop someone from getting on for free. These bus inspectors, are they armed, do they have arrest powers and what is the penalty for riding gratis.
The S79 Select Bus Service is not exactly an SBS because it has onboard fare collecting at the front of the bus. It must be called Select Bus Service because it makes limited stops, and it runs more frequently. One thing noticeable is that the limited routes only run at certain times on weekdays, and the S79 Select Bus Service runs 7 days a week.
I just recently learned of this new system on some of the crosstown buses. I thought it was a new system but apparently it was started already in 2010. It's a very weird and awkward system. If you haven't already purchased a ride, you're told to get off the bus and buy a fare from the machines. I've seen many people get on in the middle of the bus, are they not purchasing a fare at all?
If they do board when a Ticket Inspector comes on board He/She will give them a Fine of 100$ For not paying before boarding The sense is so that It takes WAY less time boarding since all doors can be used as people should of paid before getting on It looks complex at first but once you understand it it becomes a heck of a lot simpler
alexvids 1121 M23 is already SBS. However, it was determined that all Crosstown (except for 125th Street, which carries 4 routes, and 14th Street during the L train shutdown) would have ALL local service replaced with SBS service, with some Stops consolidated to speed up service.
Nick Jablonski The Metro Card fare collector machines are very easy to use. All you just do is press the silver start button, insert the Metro Card Face-Up. Take it out, and a receipt will print out. Pull out the receipt. Keep the receipt for the trip. This is in case fare inspectors appear at the stop the bus reaches, or if you are boarding or exiting the bus with fare inspectors. You have to charge hundreds of dollars if there are fare inspectors on the buses, and you don't have a ticket. Also, the correct kind of ticket for you.
Nick Jablonski You will probably not know when fare inspectors are going to appear. You should always have the receipt ready for fare inspectors. They might surprise you.
Akhil P Walia The process for the M15 SBS is the same for every single SBS Route, except for the S79, which does not have off-board fare payment, and the Q70 when they waive the fares on the line for high airport travel.
