  • Francisco Pizarro and the Conquest of Peru - audiobook
    Frederick A. OBER (1849 - 1913)
Francisco Pizarro (1471 - 1541) was born into poverty, the illegitimate son of a Spanish soldier. After a brief career as a swineherd, he volunteered to join an expedition to the colony of Darien in Panama. He rose through the ranks to become right hand man of the governor. After hearing rumours of a rich country of gold to the south, he received permission from the king of Spain to lead an expedition to explore and attempt to conquer the Peruvian empire. This biography describes how, with an army of only 168 men, he was able to subjugate an entire nation. - Summary by Patrick Eaton
    Genre(s): Early Modern, Exploration

Well written, and well read. Thanks to Patrick. I prefer it when one, good reader read the whole book, instead of many changing voices.

I find it puzzling that all those thousands upon thousands of Inca warriors were so impotent against the few hundred Spaniards. Even when the Inca ruling class got it together and incited an uprising, they were still unable to defeat the invaders. Obviously this is what happened, but I fail to understand it every time I encounter this history.

      A LOS 130 sobrevivia.
Por otro que los descendientes de esos pueblos originarios aún sufren de la misma discriminación racial que llegó con occidente.

Because those Spanish were highly motivated, supremely confident, polished professional warriors with state of the art weapons, armor, tactics and strategy. But, most important was the perceptive, pragmatic, and decisive intellect of their highly ambitious commanders. “He who dares, wins”.

I agree. But Hollywood would never glorify a man like Pizzaro. Even as a "bad guy" his skill, ambition, luck, and overall story commands respect. And they can't have that.

I wonder why, could it possibly be that the only records we have of the conquest are written, due to the fact that all those involved are long dead and the Inca didn’t have written language? It’s told the best way it possibly can be. History will always be centric to the language it is recorded in. You don’t see people complaining that the history of the Ming dynasty is “Sinocentric”.
