      I'd think it would be quite hard for a top class player to come up with the helpful advice for a beginner, if they don't do coaching with the beginners, at best they'll remember something from the times when they were beginners themselves :-)) The level gap is too big for it to be easy for them to imagine what does a beginner struggle with the most, what is the most important thing at that level of play

    I would like to defend the decel vs pace. Don't have much snooker experience, but to me as an engineer this makes a lot of sense. It's true that impact is very short, but I would expect that if you hit the white at the same speed but acceletating, time of contact will be longer than when decelerating. Still short, but I wouldn't be surprised if it turned out to be as much as twice as long. I wouldn't expect it to have much effect on cue ball speed, but I would expect it to make a big difference in how much spin is imparted on the cue ball.

    • @alienck3901
      @alienck3901 5 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      They were talkin abt stun shot tht doesnt require spin on white ball

    • @piokul
      @piokul 5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@alienck3901 Yeah, I agree it won't matter there. Just wanted to mention where it would make a difference, because learning about accelerating the cue during impact helped me to understand imparting decent spin, while the often used expression 'strike through the cue ball' didn't do much for me.

    • @AD-kv9kj
      @AD-kv9kj 5 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      Yep. Smoothly "pinching" or gripping the cueball with the tip is a vital fundamental skill to learn to manoeuvre and control the cue ball. Keeping your grip only tight enough to stop the cue slipping out of your hand on the strike is important, to allow the cue that tiny bit of spring/buffering when the tip contacts the cue ball. When you get this kind of delicate strike right, you can hear the difference too as the balls seem to *click* sweetly on impact rather than *thunk*. @@piokul

    Michael is 100% correct on his explanation on deceleration. As long as the contact point is at the speed, decel or accel doesn't matter. Think of a boxer making contact. The accel or decel doesn't matter as long as the contact is at the correct speed.

    • @101spirited
      @101spirited 4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Nup, you want the your tip to be in contact with the cue ball for as long as possible. From the first instant of contact the cue ball is trying to get away. You want to push the cue through at the same rate to hold onto it. Compare the feel and work you get on the ball from a sweetly timed shot to one you have stabbed at. Only one of them you have accelerated though properly.

    Holt was making a fair point even if fairly pedantic. If a ball doesnt reach the pocket and has been struck properly, it's simply not been hit hard enough. Deceleration seems to be blamed for all shots that dont reach but if a player strikes it correctly and has accelerated through impact, you cant say hes decelerated, hes simply not hit it hard enough.
    I think deceleration is used as just too broad a reason which is his point. If you have decelerated and its caused you to miss cue then yeah, blame it on deceleration. If you simply havent hit it hard enough then, whether you decelerate or accelerate through impact them you simply havent hit it hard enough.
    Golf is the best example of where deceleration is a common issue, you very rarely want to decelerate through impact. When chipping for example, if you decelerate the result is often a mis hit shot where you fat it. If you hit it squarely the likeliness is you wont have decelerated even if you dont hit it hard enough. Snooker its just too sweeping for a bad shot.

      Holt's general point is that folk worry too much about stuff that doesn't really matter. Snooker's a hard enough game without filling your head with a bunch of mumbo jumbo every time you prepare to take a shot.

      Hendry has said multiple times that if you decel you can miss the pot on the thin side. This is absolutely true and if you know that you can intentionally decel and aim thick on a shot where you want to hold the white, try it for yourself

    The issue with a lot of these things Holt comes out with like the little argument over deceleration, is he's so desperate to be contradictory and sound clever that he reframes the topic to make a point that is true of itself but is ultimately talking at cross purposes... Hendry is talking about decel in terms of a player's own personal cue action. This action should be honed to, as consistently as possible, strike the cue ball at the right speed and timing for a given shot. Always having that properly controlled acceleration to some degree not only improves the spin control you can impart but keeps each shot more consistent and helps maintain a player's confidence in their own strike. If you're decelerating on little shots and then accelerating on longer shots or shots where you need to really grip the cue ball for spin etc, you're causing unnecessary inconsistency in your own game.
    It's all very well segmenting off bits of a problem and arguing over things like basic physics to be try and be smart, but he's often ignoring entire other aspects of a given discussion in order to make these points. Hendry looks a bit confused and increasingly annoyed with Holt over that decel discussion because he knows what he's trying to say, but he also knows he is ignoring other elements of the issue to just be contradictory and seem more clever than every other snooker professional.
    Hendry did just a little bit better than Holt in his snooker career, and was astonishingly consistent for about 15-20 years. Every other professional who has consistently won a lot of big tournaments all know not to decelerate on shots for this reason...of course you can pot some balls with an inconsistent and frankly poor cue action, that's not the point...you could pot balls with a broom handle used like a golf club if you wanted to, it's physically very possible, but you shouldn't practice and teach that way.

      Well I get your point but he also mentions that a player should play in a way which he can repeat, so if someone is always playing shots with decel it really wouldnt matter, wouldnt it?

      my take on it was not the decel or otherwise, it's that when your action is not within its normal parameters, the over (or under) reach means the cue's not straight, hence the miss. They're arguing in one dimension only, which is why the argument doesn't go anywhere.
