I'm trying to remove a distributor cap from a 1988 Mercruiser 5.7 Alpha one gen one and there is not enough room around screws to get a socket so having difficult time doing it with a standard screw driver. Do you have any tips!!
@@NKPGarage it’s labeled. #1 plug wire is about 11’oclock position(near the transom) however it’s back firing. I read some forums that it should be at 5 or 7’o clock. I thought someone here may have a 7.4 that can look.
@@TheBchau When you put the distributor cap on, it really only goes on one direction. There's not a way to put it on clocked in the opposite direction. Were you able to figure yours out? If not, I can try to get a better visual for you.

@@Hf0205 when you turn the key the engine is not even turning over? If that’s the case it doesn’t have to do with the coil or wires. You’re not getting power somewhere. Could be one of the breakers that popped and needs to be reset. Could be the on/off battery switch if your boat has one. Could also be the ignition breaker. Or possibly a dead battery or loose battery cable.
I have the same engine. 6.4 mpi v8. Last trip prior to this mod. Boat fires up no problem. I had lose of power on the lake. So I figured I needed a tune up. And sure my cap and rotor were corroded. So I also replaced spark plugs and wires

Hey I’m new to boating , but might b a dumb question , but do u disconnect your batteries before u change everything or turn the battery switches off or neither?
Like my old shop teacher used to tell us in high school, "the only dumb questions are the ones you don't have the courage to ask"... You don't necessarily have to disconnect the batteries, but it is always a good idea so that you don't accidentally bump a live wire somewhere. If you have a battery switch it's always a good idea to turn it to the OFF position before doing any work on the boat.
Would have been better to show how you removed the old rotor. Some are on so tight need to pry off with screw driver or other tools. Also you have to show that the new rotor needs to fit all the way down on the shaft tightly. You need to show more of your work.

Do your screws have a philips head in addition to the hex head? Or are they hex only?

I saw one video where the guy had to drill the distributor screws to get the cap off😒

I have twins 1991 mercruiser 7.4 L V8 454 my question the distributors go in the same position or barias
Same location I think. SHould be the same no matter if you are single engine or dual engine.
I removed my all plug wires vs transferring one at a time. Which plug on the distributor cap is the #1 cylinder?
On most distributor caps each one is labeled one through eight. Look closely on yours. Do you see any notations?

Did you make sure to reconnect the coil wire in the middle?
@NKPGarage yes. So weird it won't even turn. Nothing. No 100 dead. Batteries are new. Thank you foe the quick reply 🙏
I even flipped the small middle coil wire around figured maybe wrong ends. But nothing

Yes sir! Love those 502's! We have an 8.2GSi VP on our 292. By far one of my favorite motors!

That's great feedback ! I'll definitely capture the things you mentioned When I do the cap/rotor again this season.
I can't get the wires off the spark plugs. If I pull any harder I am going to break them.
When they get stuck like that I usually take my time and wiggle side to side, and sometimes try to twist as well until they break loose.

100% agree. We need more American companies to bring manufacturing back to the USA!!
