Witcher 3, I picked up and put down four or five times at this point. Every single time I go through the tutorial, fight those first few monsters, get on the horse, get to that town and go into that bar with the card game, and this is the exact point where I lose any steam every single time. When I decide to pick it up again I boot it up, realize I don’t remember any controls or mechanics, have no idea what to do and start anew. And the cycle continues… Maybe one of these days I will end up loving it, but by this point I seriously doubt it. It’s also exactly the same with Skyrim for me, too.

This is how I felt with Octopath Traveler 2, only that I took nearly a year to even play it.
I thought Octopath Traveler 1 was just ok, and didn't really feel like a sequel would impress me much (especially not at $60). I waited until the Holiday Steam sale, then finally bought it in January. It was so much better than I ever imagined, making me actually feel guilty I bought it at half price!
Aside from that, I've tried playing The Witcher 3 about 4 times, but never played more than 2 hours. Somehow I can push through 3-4 hours of Persona games doing nothing but dialog & cutscenes, but I can't push through 2 hours of The Witcher? I can't explain it! 😅

After I finished Metroid Dread, I started looking for other metroidvania games available on switch. I compared that list to games that were currently on sale and the common thread was the game "Guacamelee." It looked cartoony and goofy - not at all matching the aesthetic I was hoping for, but it was highly reviewed. I started playing it a few times, never getting that far into it. Then one day, I played for a little longer than before and was oh, so pleasantly surprised. It was the only game I played for a while. The platforming puzzles were very challenging, parts of the combat were very complex and hard, and the game mechanics were very unique. I also really appreciated all of the subtle (and not so subtle) nods to other games hidden throughout. I just got Guacamelee 2 and have been really really enjoying it as well.

The biggest seller for dragon quest xi is its demo. If you do everything in the demo it will take you around 10-20 hours, genuinely. You get up to 4 party members, can level up to level 20 iirc, and you get a big meaty chunk of the story and dungeons. Then if you decide to buy it, borrow it, rent it or whatever all your data carries over. Its incredible.

Many of the titles I came to adore over the years took bouncing off of a few times before I found them at the right time to appreciate what they brought to the table. Hell, that's part of why my backlog is so tremendous. There are myriad games that I recognize the brilliance of and that I can see how I'm going to enjoy them. I'm just waiting for the mood to hit to appreciate them properly.

I tried so hard to get into Monster Hunter in general. I bought games on the 3DS and even Rise on Switch, but it never clicked. This past January, I made the commitment to really give Rise my attention. Two hundred and twenty hours later, I am still going through Sunbreak, have gotten a couple of people (including family) hooked and I am now telling everyone to give it a try.

Gosh, I'd really like to get into Monster Hunter but the tutorial and UI are aweful! It's like they expect you to know a bunch of stuff from playing previous entries. And in the short period I played, I couldn't get used to the controls and movement. I will eventually give it another try though

    • @eggroll20xd6
      @eggroll20xd6 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

@patricioart4301 the training area was a BIG help to learn some basic combos in Rise. You can also look at your hunters notes for more combos for a specific weapon. Spend time trying every weapon until one seems interesting, then spend 10 minutes getting down timing. Do some HR 1 quests to hunt basic stuff until you have a good feel, then try going through the village quests.
It sounds like a lot, but in about 2 hours of gameplay, it will save you a big headache. If you have someone who plays that is willing to watch you and help when necessary, that is the beat teaching tool. If you have 3 other friends willing to give it a go, it is the most fun you can have in Monster Hunter and you really become a team.

I remember sitting there, watching the credits after getting ending E, hold the controller, wiping away tears, and thinking, "I'm not the same person now that I've played this." I will never look at life and living the same because of Nier: Automata, and I hold it as one of, if not the greatest video game I have ever played.

Then I got ending E. No spoilers but I was literally staring, smiling, shaking my head at the TV as the credits were rolling. I consumed all the Nier and Drakengard lore TH-cam videos a full week or so after that. Absolutely one of the greatest games ever made.

The first time I think I hadn't quite understood how the update system worked, and the fights were just getting too long and hard. The second time I really paid attention at the start, and suddenly the systems started making sense, and I finally could focus on the story that was fantastic. And about half way through I realised how great that game was and how much fun I was having. I ended up finishing the game in only a few sessions, I couldn't put it down!

DQ XI was one I instantly fell in love with. I would say that Witcher 3 is one of those games for me too. I beat the Baron quest but the whole time I wasn't enjoying myself because I kept expecting a jumpscare. The game was almost too atmospheric... also the large amount of side stuff was overwhelming even though I usually like games like that.
Xenoblade 2 is probably on that list for me... I started it a couple times and I WANT to love the Xenoblade games but so far I haven't done more than the first part. Breath of the Wild is also on that list of games I've started but never got too far into but I want to love it the way other people seem to.
I suppose one game that it took me awhile to really appreciate was the original Suikoden. I rented it and did not care for it but then I bought it as part of a buy 2 get one sale and that time I really did fall in love with it.

And I love simple RPGs so I think I want to try DQ, but I'm also intimidated by how long those games are.

Dragon Quest 11 at first I couldn’t get into but I think I was just more in the mood to play a different style game at the time. I think it was nearly 2 years after launch when I finally gave it another chance and I loved the game. I even got the platinum trophy in that game.
The Witcher 3 I fell in love with that game immediately and couldn’t stop playing at all till I finished.
Another game though I couldn’t get into at first was Dragon Age Inquisition. Played the game for an hour, literally fell asleep in my chair for a couple hours, played the game for a few mins more then I put it down. I eventually picked it up again and completed the game, and even done a second play through later on, but I much prefer the first Dragon Age game with its expansion over this one.

The way I've gotten past this hurdle with some games, is I take every game in my library and use a random # generator to pick one, then I force myself to stick with it the whole time I'm at my job (there is a lot of downtime at our hotel). If I still am not invested after a couple of shifts, it was never going to be my game and I'll watch the rest on youtube. The others, well I've gotten a few new favs this year like Demon Turf and American Fugitive, currently I'm immersed in Ni No Kuni (even though I can't stand most jrpgs), and looking forward to whatever comes next!

I had a similar experience with the Witcher 3 where I got into it every now and again (thankfully remembered enough to never restart). Definitely an all time favourite! One game that took me a second try was Warframe, tried it out on PS4 when it was fresh, didn’t get into it and then tried it again on PC and it clicked. It does take a little bit to get into but definitely an improved experience nowadays. Trying POE but haven’t gotten into it.

Hollow Knight doesn't really lend itself to short plays, so I've never played it handheld. Its a game I found you really need to get deep into. After 35 years of gaming (I started when I was 4) Hollow Knight has actually topped my favourite games of all time. It overtook A Link to the Past, which for 30 years has not been beat and its a game I replay every year. But Hollow Knight, its an amazing game of systems, and world building, challenges, and great ideas, and good DLC.
But the funny thing is, I also found the beginning of the game a little lacking... It comes off more like a Limbo clone on first visual impressions but the world and challenge increases quickly once you get to the first boss and go beyond this. I have completed it 3 times now and own it on Switch, PS5, Xbox Series X and Steam. And the Devs deserve every penny i spent on it.

So funny enough, and blasphemous as this may sound. I initially had a hard time getting into ToTK. That alone is a crazy statement because Zelda to this day is still my favorite franchise! I loved the opening and a lot of the sky island tutorial, but after I landed in Hyrule I just kept dying over and over and over. I then decided on a whim to just progress the story and it started getting better, got the hang glider, did the first dungeon w Tulin and then found the depths for the first time and was both shocked and a bit terrified of what that whole area was. How Nintendo kept that a secret till launch is frankly amazing! 😂 But yeah those first like 10 hours I was not feeling it at first. Glad I kept moving forward with it though. As for Witcher I just got it a couple of months ago and I absolutely love it. 118 hours in so far. 👍😊

I also put down both Witcher 3 and Hollow Knight after trying to enjoy them, so It's interesting to hear you had a similar initial impression. That was especially true w.r.t. Witcher 3, I could not STAND the combat. It does make me wonder if I should go back at some point, but there just isn't time. These days I tend to view games that aren't clicking with me as somewhat of a win, since it means I can move on to one of the other massive games that require my attention :P (either new or in the endless backlog)
Also it's interesting you mention the animations of Xenoblade Chronicles DE. I played the original, on Wii, and instantly fell in love with it, but when I picked up the DE re-release I started playing for a bit and then fell off of it. @@ishkapiska4516It's possibly just me who didn't get it, ultimately, but I found the moveset and attack timings were a challenge to get working reliably and the magic had a fairly minimal impact. It felt clunky and unsatisfying, but maybe I was missing something obvious? I did enjoy preparing for the fights by crafting things like poison coatings for my sword, etc. that I learnt about from the monster compendium, I just wanted that strategic planning to have a big impact on the actual fights and it rarely seemed to because I found attacking so finicky. I gave it a good 10 hours before throwing in the flag, but it's such a huge game it's certainly possible more mechanics open up later that would have improved things.

@@dufflebagg i think to see if the preparation has a bigger impact on combat you gotta up the difficulty. I noticed that I used potions and oils far more often on hard difficulty then on easy/normal. Xenoblade 3 also incorporated the whole game section to learn mechanics and it took around 10 hours to pass that one.
