I've been using a sidekick for a couple years, and thought that it got lost. So I went to replace it. Did a ton of research, and decided I wanted to get the OHT. Then my wife told me she found my sidekick and had it in her purse and forgot to give it to me. Decided to get a new one anyway since I had been thinking about upgrading. Went to a nearby Lowe's, and didn't see an OHT, so I decided on the The Free P2. Quickly fell in love with it. I spent about a half hour before actually getting into bed last night just flipping it around. It's pretty addicting.

My Skeletool CX and Supertool 300 are my favourite multitools, offering a choice between lightweight and heavyweight tools. I don't use my Wave (1st gen) much - the wobbly inaccurate closing on mine just bugs me. The Crunch is a masterpiece of design and reminds me a bit of the Free in that it's totally floppy until snapped into position - I love it though don't use it a lot. The Free appeals to me for its innovative design though on first look I'm not that keen on the handle scale design. The UK prices are also a turn off. I'd be delighted to get one as a gift though!

Thanks Cody! Yea, I'd like to see a bit driver in it as well. They could have just not put in all the dedicated screwdrivers, and used the space for an interchangeable bit driver. BUT, I guess they didn't want that for this multi!

You are absolutely right: the FreeP4 is in no way a competitor to the Wave - the magnetic lock will get clogged up with metal dust and shavings, they missed to put a spring to the pliers, which would really be an advantage, and I don't like sheepfoot blades, what are they good for?
I don't like combined tools e.g. that can opener/caplifter-combo, it's not very good at either task, same as the reamer/small flathead-combo, try to drill a hole in some seasoned hardwood or punch a hole in some stiff leather.

I am light bushcraft oriented. The Surge will remain my main MT. However, I collect MTs, and the new magnetic architecture intrigued me. I was also tired of carting around super kit with bits and blades and extenders, when not needed. I like the self-sufficiency of a single tool kit in a minimalist carry, for non-bushcrafting around town days.
To each his own. I have 40 MTs, and enjoy the engineering. I never wish one model had this or that, or suggest what is missing.
But if the Victorinox Spirit is put out with replaceable cutters, watch out Leatherman!

I really wanted to like this tool, but will wait until and see if future versions have exchangeable bits. As a side note I have no problems opening my Wave one handed and they must really have an abundance of slotted screws in the USA because in Canada my experience is that they are only used as prybars and to include four slotted screwdrivers on one tool seams over the top.

I have two MT, the original wave that must be at least 22 plus years old and a new supertool that was replace under warranty for a 25 years old super tool.
The wave is what I wear 5 days a week as a school caretaker (you might call us janitors or property managers). The wave is slightly too small, but is good to carry and has extra tools if I need them. The supertool is a tad too big but is way stronger and the tools it has are better.

Leatherman Wave and Juice CS4 are my multi-tools of choice. Juice CS4 is a random pocket carry(I honestly rarely grab it but not for any fault of the tool), Wave for when I am able to wear the sheath on my belt. I carry 1 cartridge of my most useful bits in the back of my sheath and the Wave has saved my bacon so many times that it takes all the gold medals. I don't leave the house without my Victorinox Farmer in a pocket though I only switched to it from the Wave when I moved to a more corporate work environment. The Free looks quite decent but the lack of the changeable bits is a deal breaker for me.

I always roll my eyes when i hear leatherman quality. Granted my old wave that i sold was very solidly made, but i bought a wave+ 2h twice, both times horrendous tolerances, stiff pliers, sharp edges, floppy handles. My new surge bought used (made in 2017) is so stiff when opened, it requires a lot of force to close it. Try a swisstool (the big one). Its made since 1997, has all tools from the outside (revolutionary stuff) and the walk and talk blows anything else on the market out of the water, no contest. Granted, you need two hands and fingernails and its quite the old school design (some would say outdated) but i have yet to find a better one and i dont think leatherman stepped up their quality control. The idea of the free is outstanding, the execution is another story.

I have the wave. Usually leave it in my tackle box. I pretty much have every tool imaginable pretty close at hand but after watching this video I’m going to try carrying mine for a while and see if it’s beneficial to have on my belt !!! I’m 55 and my Dad bought me my wave about 10 years ago. It’s been in my tackle box ever since. I’ve probably fished twice since then but I’m not sure if I ever used the wave or not. Like I said I have every tool in my van so it would be more comfortable for me to get what I need out of the van where I know where it is. I doubt that I’ll like the extra weight on my belt.

I agree except I'd add a stamped rule to the frame and ditch the little rule. I'd sacrifice the serrated blade for a large file. And bring back the eagle claw combo tool. That one is too useful and compact to not be there. Basically repackage the wave tools in this frame and it's perfect 👌. The magnets don't get gummy with metal shavings either and it's easier to wipe clean than the wave anyway, so that wouldn't matter. Though my largest structural concern are the omega springs.

Thanks for nice review. After watching many reviews, I think I get Rebar or ST300 to replace my 22 years old Super Tool (still in good condition, perfect for my use except weight and no clip). This new tool is a bit too complex and compromise in its design and its magnet thing is there only to keep tools close. Personally, I like simple things, I like the old combo can/bottle opener better, the file is just too short, not compatible with bit kit is a deal breaker (I guess they purposely did that so they can release a new separate adapter for Free series later). It is an interesting concept but P2/P4 is just not for me, still waiting for K2/K4 though.

For those three things is it worth a 235% price jump over the $60 US rebar? Not imho, plus the rebar is lighter and comes with a leather sheath. I know you said it's not competing against anything but unless you're a multitool collector then it's de facto competing with the multitools people already own

Can u swipe tools between the two like if u want to add the file on the wave to the free would that be possible?

    • @mackjones7688
      @mackjones7688 4 ปีที่แล้ว

No, the outside tools such as the file are not swappable to the free series P2 and P4. The toolset in general is shorter because of the outside tool accessible design, the locking system, and the platform overall. The full size file on the Wave + and the Super Tool 300 are just so convenient. Really is a step back that they didn't put a bit driver and t shank holder into the P4 for that price.

Leatherman surge is more versatile than the Leatherman free. The Leather Man free could have did better with the available accessories they failed in that department in my opinion

Hello, I'm leatherman fan! But.. .. If American multitools reached Swiss European standards in terms of quality, quality control, Tolerance machining, uniformity etc, they would be the best in design and warranty. Unfortunately, however, the objective reality is that the Swiss of victorinox create a superior product in build quality. I have 7 leatherman(and 2 gerber) , I always wanted to believe they were the best multitools, but after having 3 swisstool spirits, I gave in to reality. Victorinox is better. And it makes me angry because it would be enough for the leatherman (or other American producers) to raise the quality standard. If they don't, they will soon be overtaken by the Chinese too.
ALL MY LEATHERMAN (and also gerber), also a !!!179 euros!!! charge g10, have some play in locking tools or different friction between one side and other.
All my swisstool and Sak are PERFECT, zero play, zero difference.
Someone say leatherman and American tools are less refined but more heavy duty, more rugged , but the simple reality is that victorinox swiss are better built.
Maybe they make on free p series??
Unfortunately I still don't have one!!!
In European union (almost Italy, Germany and Spain, country that I stay) leatherman is some much expensive that victorinox.
We pay an average of 20 euros more than the USA price.
A wave plus cost 120/130 euros, a swisstool spirit X cost 90 euros.
Maybe in the USA is the opposite and victorinox is much expensive than in Europe. I don't know.

That's an interesting take, my friend. I have yet to try a Swiss, but now you have me wanting one!

    • @fc436

Hi, thank you for your reply.
Don't get me wrong, I think leatherman has 3 top points of the whole multitool market:
-The only manufacturer to offer premium blades and premium materials.
      - unbeatable guarantee, you buy one and if you break it by throwing it under a train 100 times, 100 times they will change it for free
      - innovative design.
But the Swiss are the best in terms of build quality and precision.
If leatherman achieved these building standards, he would be the undisputed leader for the next century.
But I don't understand why it doesn't add that extra touch of Swiss manufacturing precision.

The Free series is a joke and will fade away. Once people are over the flashy one-hand gimmick and actually use it in a practical way they realize the design of the Wave is far superior. The Free is designed for people who barely use their multitools and want something flashy they can fidget with.
