The P4 is the bomb. I can open every tool with one hand and they are all on the outside. The Phillips flat bit on the P4 is very durable and I can open small and medium Phillips heads with ease. The box opener I use daily on those Amazon boxes. P4 is my choice.
I am using my wave+ heavily for 2 years. Now i can open and close it EASILY with one hand. Once I loosen a little bit main blade screw, it opens like a folder knife with a flick. Leatherman Wave is the best.
For me the fact that the wave has a shorter body and longer tools is a clear winner. Not to mention the blade shape and flat grind of the wave blades are a winner also. The only improvement on the wave would be to use the same precision and workmanship they did on the p4 and also an open frame design like on the mut, to save weight and to make it look like something the terminator would use !
This is a big improvement over the Wave, much easier to open one handed. The only negative is that it does not have a #2 Robertson bit. As a contractor I frequently use a #2 Robbie as it is the most common screw used for various uses & I am sure I am not alone on that request. The saw blade could be a toch longer for better stroke.
Yeah that’s the downside with not having a bit exchanger you’re stuck with what they put on, I work on computers a lot and the ability to have torn is huge! Thanks for watching!
The flat Phillips on the P4 works great on the small Phillips on plug covers and medium Phillips on kitchen door hinges. The box opener is a must that I use daily on the P4. One hand operation including deploying all tools with one hand is nice when you are holding something with one hand and reaching for the tool. Can’t do that with the wave.
I use the scissors on my wave for trimming my finger nails fairly often. I also abuse the eyeglasses screwdriver by using it for poking and prying. I have broken a few of them but they are fairly inexpensive and easy to replace. I also do some work with metal so having a tool with magnets can collect metal filings so for me the wave is a way better tool.
@@kylepilling1226 I am not sure although everything with a magnet in my shop tends to collect fine metal dust. Even my ear buds that use a magnet to hold them in the case collect stuff. I like my Wave and the p4 isn't interesting enough for me to risk getting a tool that might not work out.
I've seen, read, or heard nothing that convinces me that the P series overall is equal to, much less better than, the Wave. Sure, the P4 has more outside tools, but if the tools are crap, what have you gained? I do like the P's serrated blade and scissors, but that's about it. The Awl, ruler, and file are jokes without a punchline. I recently did some checking and found out that I can get a Wave with two sheaths, including a leather one, for $20 less than a P4.
All. My stiff leatherman get smooth in 2 days with 20 or 30 hard wire Cutts! (wave charge surge rebar) Indeed, they even become too loose and take play after many cuts
on of the other things I think you missed is that the p4free has much better locking system for all tools including the knifes etc the wave + has locks for trhe knifes etc but they arent as sturdy
The quality built and ingeneering is uncomparable between free and all other leatherman. Free series is on another planet in terms of precision, tolerance and construction quality. Zero play, perfectly symmetrical, super smooth. I repeat : another planet. First time leatherman surpass victorinox in terms of precision an details.
The wave and surge are hard to beat! I like that the pliers on the free feel smoother but I agree not sure it’s worth the extra $$. I like that leather man is trying new things but still currently the wave and surge are hard to beat

Nice comparison.

Take Care!

Just ordered a P4. Hoping I like it.
you will :)
The second inside tool that you named was actually a pry tool and a package opener

I've collected some extra bit drivers too, easy to swap out as needed!
Hey im a machinist so im always covered in metal chips from work do you think the p4 would be a big issue

@@diyVT very true i think ill pass on it
They should just make a magnetic wave+ its by far my favorite multi-tool after changing the saw for wingman scissors.
Man I love my wave but that p4 is a beautiful tool
Unless you're running a bit kit with the extender the free series is better. Having longer tools makes them far more useful than what's on the wave

I see nothing in the Free series that' could make me give up my Wave or Surge. There's just nothing about it that makes it worth the extra dollars.

😊😊cool
I rather have the wave
The wave has been a best seller for years for a good reason! it's an excellent design!
