    80s: we finally fixed all those tape problems. 2020s: we finally made a great pedal to recreate those tape problems.

      I grew up in the 80s and was into hi fidelity, so yeah it's pretty funny to pay 400 for all the stuff we were trying to get rid of. And yet, I love this pedal.

    I got one one of these and have also purchased most other lofi pedals and plugins out there. The GenLoss2 is clearly Chase Bliss working hard to make the best of them all with all the variety and algorithms they put in this thing. I would say, the real magic of this is when you use it in a subtle way. Out of the box, its easy to get into its more extreme settings, but in my opinion, it truly shines and becomes more useful when everything is applied subtly.

    Jorb getting me through my lunch break! I’m used to the even up and down modulation of my 404 tape effect. True tape saturation calls for a tape machine that’s just serviced enough to record and playback fine, but the rubber bands are a bit dry or stretched out 😂 this pedal does a way better job then the 404. That failure knob is so sweeeet.

    I'd love to get a Generation Loss, but to be honest you can piece the sound together with other (much less expensive pedals) - and of course within software, but there's something nice about have a little self contained box that does it all . . . . I've got a Fairfield Shallow Water and a Demedash T120, which are both great, and a couple of homemade devices that get really close to the original Generation Loss . . . but at the end of the day - for those who miss out on getting a Generation Loss, the sound can be made fairly easily with other gear.

      it actually sounds kind of bad on drums and anything percussive. theres is a tiny slap-back delay that cannot be tuned out with any settings. it really sounds like theres an audible delay between the wet and dry signal, even if you have it set to 100% wet.

    Add something like the zvex instant LoFi in parallel with the Gen Loss as that way the near silent drops will be far less pronounced. The LoFi will keep it going during these drops. Besides that, the sound of Parallel LoFi effects is so much better than series or just one.
    This is how I plan to use these two pedals. I have both, I just need to finish making the (dedicated) parallel looper box.
    The LoFi is an excellent pedal in its own right, same with the LoFi looper…I have that too. 😂

    as someone who is gradually shifting from "all analog" to "all digital", there are still some pedals and modules in my line that bother me for sounding too clean, too crisp, and too refined... i do appreciate the irony of purposefully adding the noise back in, but the footprint is way smaller than analog gear, and the parameters are way more controllable!

      I think the user experience is really great, what seemed to be less than ideal? The hidden controls are all well chose, theyre the sort of things I dont need direct control of.

    • @kylenowcrylater
      @kylenowcrylater ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Two you pointed out so far - the LEDs not changing to reflect the model (or really any kind of feedback something changed) and the inability to modify the volume drops so that it doesn’t cut out completely.
      As a whole it seems like all these features have been retrofitted into a typical chase bliss pedal, when perhaps a more specific design, tailored to these features, could have worked better. I own the warped vinyl and that pedal seems fairly intuitive, so the UX can work, but I am skeptical here

    • @JorbLovesGear
      @JorbLovesGear  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@kylenowcrylater I think the model thing is minor, easily worked around by listening.
      Plus if I *really* need a specific model, I can save them in a preset.
      Spread slightly mitigates the full scale drops, or they can by bypassed all together if that was the only deal breaker.

    "or your budget, Or Your Budget, OR YOUR BUDGET"
    i tend to see the Generation Loss pedal as a tool (or perhaps array of tools, in its singular package ?) as worth the cost, especially if you are actually going to keep it and use it long term, and not just flipping pedals, thus price-gouging peoples eyes out and skull-fucking their wallets.

    Hey Jorb, great video as always! I have two questions for you:
    1) do you ever teach how to use pedals. Your ability to know what the more complex pedals do is really impressive. My job is extremely demanding and i am wondering if you ever teach via zoom. May seem like a dumb question, but it would really help my learning curve to have someone walk me through pedals/ synths etc.
    2) What do you think about the generation Loss versus Ribbons? I really dig both, but this one looks like it would be more user friendly.

    Thanks for this I always wondered what the original Generation Loss did. As predominantly I am guitarist, I already have Chase Bliss pedals and the midi box on my pedalboard so MIDI control isn't really an issue. Unfortunately I don't actually see many musical applications for it except for SFX or the supposed "modern" lofi trend. To be honest if I want something like this I'd just use the Empress Effects ZOIA or VSTs. The new controls seem more useable though especially for synths.

    • @JorbLovesGear
      @JorbLovesGear  ปีที่แล้ว

      Shallow Water is cool, input dynamics controlling the filter is a really effective design choice. and at no dry signal its just a single delay from a bucket brigade, randomly modulated for something similar to wow / snags. A pretty different approach to lo fi, and a really cool one

  • @integerdivision
    @integerdivision ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Stop feeling bad about selling a pedal for more than its list price. In fact, you should feel good about it since the person who bought it probably got way more out of it than whoever would have bought it at the list price and you got some extra dough to help you in your ventures. There are many problems with markets - this is not one of them. Markets compress innumerable factors into a single mechanism: the price. This allows us to make better buying decisions and allows companies to make better production decisions. The fact that you sold it for more is almost certainly one of the reasons that there is a MKII. So thank you for not hoarding gear and actually making use of something in short supply by selling it.

    • @fffffffffax
      @fffffffffax ปีที่แล้ว +1

      this thing is a weird market of its own but a symbol of supply/demand / demand subject to coolness/improvement…now everyone is loosing money on it if sold now; scalp price plummeted over a few months but the cost to compare both versions to know what one likes the best is pretty elitist level but just funny to think how newness can be an easy marketing trick more than actual improvement in some cases.

      If I recall correctly, the MIDI standard stipulates that a MIDI In jack needs to be optocoupled, to avoid ground noise. Because most guitar pedals with TRS MIDI input are not optocoupled (or even TRS MIDI A or B; e.g., Meris and Empress receive on tip and send on ring), a MIDI box is advised, such as those made by Empress Effects or Disaster Area Designs (the box’s TRS outputs are optocoupled).
      I’ve been able to alternatively connect MIDI to a Chase Bliss pedal in a complicated, but box-free manner, like this: MIDI DIN to 1/8” MIDI TRS A cable, 1/8” connected to a 1/4” TRS adapter, which is connected to the TS ring input of a HOSA y split left/right 1/4” TS to 1/4”TRS insert-style adapter, with the 1/4” TRS connected to the Chase Bliss MIDI In jack. The tip input of that y split adapter can allow for remote operation of the left switch at the same time that MIDI is used on ring. God, I hope that made sense.
      tl;dr: guitar pedal TRS MIDI is mostly non-standard, not even TRS A or B. Chase Bliss receives MIDI on ring (and left footswitch remote on tip). A Disaster Area MIDIBox 4 is a good option.

      Someone needs to design one that recreates the old classic film-reel projector degradation audio flutter. Growing-up in the 60’s/70’s (before video-tape was common), most schools in the US, had old 1950’s film-reels, and projectors, that were SO old, the sound would flutter, and warble in pitch, to the point where you couldn’t even understand the narration.

    The stereo adapter deal is a dealbreaker. How annoying that must be! Those things NEVER work properly in my experience. And for some MIRACLE they do, they will predictably STOP working the minute you have an important session, then the backup you have (in case of this exact emergency) will definitely be defective. LMAO! 🤣

      For other pedals that do trs, its really convenient to route a single cable, but i hear ya, extra complexity.

    • @JorbLovesGear
      @JorbLovesGear  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I think they're so different, really think about which you would use more, that'll matter for you.
      By the numbers I guess there's more diverse functionality in the microcosm, but if you'd rather have tape warble than fancy delay, it doesn't matter.

    Mixing in the dry in order to not completely drop out… you took issue with the wow flutter - why not just turn them all the way down?

    • @JorbLovesGear
      @JorbLovesGear  ปีที่แล้ว

      I still want the pitch modulation of wow, but its a chorusing when the dry is present, which i find distracting.
      I mentioned it later, the stereo spread option is probably the best call for mitigating the total drop outs.

    • @mpw116
      @mpw116 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Oh, gotcha. That makes sense. Yeah, it would be nice if they offered some tweakability to allow for partial drop outs. I noticed the same when using mine, spread helped them not seem so abrupt. Nice video, thanks for the reply.

     @tonyhill2318 I've pulled tape decks and vcrs out of dumpsters that stunk of indescribable filth, and if they worked at all, they never, ever sounded as bad, or had such extreme sonic degradation as the most subtle effects of this pedal (let alone with more extreme settings dialed in).
    I think that is the real generation loss we're talking about here, the loss of the reality of the former generation in favor of the delusions of those in the contemporary generation about the past generation. Even by people who were alive, sentient and active during that long lost generation.
    The generation loss at play is not a simulation of sonic degradation, but the actual degradation of reality, memory, history, lineage, heritage, culture, etc. But not really, more like, with a little and a whole bunch of and a smidge of .
    Pedal sounds good, if I found one in a dumpster I'd use it, if it worked, even if it smelled like hot dumpster filth. I'd rather spend imaginary money (in this future, toilet paper is worth more than the dollar) I don't have on synths, samplers, a basket of fx, rather than spend four hundo (what do they cost a year after this video was made, six hundo, eight?) on a pedal that makes things sound sh!tty. Especially when I have all of the gear and tape this pedal is simulating patched in and ready to analogize, generate loss, and overall sprinkle with sonic fairy dust. And Especially x2 when I enjoy using and when appropriate, abusing, this analog gear by sequences of gain staging, roughing up, stretching, crinkling tape, etc. And Especially when I (and everyone else on the planet, it seems) has a vst that does all of this, and I can instantiate it 20 times in a project and dial in the same effects as the pedal (though FAR less satisfyingly than with the actual analog gear) in just a few seconds if time and productivity are motivating factors in what I'm doing.
    It sure sounds like I'm sh!teing on Chase Bliss, I'm really not, I have a deep desire and respect for every pedal of theirs, that I'm aware of. This is just my morning's meth fueled thought omelet.
    So my apologies, with the caveat that I'll never be able to afford or use even one of these extremely quality fx pedals, so there is some lament about economic realities, and the classes they create, and really, more so my intractable, terminal personal situation.

      "Whatever you now find weird, ugly, uncomfortable and nasty about a new medium will surely become its signature. CD distortion, the jitteriness of digital video, the crap sound of 8-bit - all of these will be cherished and emulated as soon as they can be avoided. It’s the sound of failure: so much modern art is the sound of things going out of control, of a medium pushing to its limits and breaking apart. The distorted guitar sound is the sound of something too loud for the medium supposed to carry it. The blues singer with the cracked voice is the sound of an emotional cry too powerful for the throat that releases it. The excitement of grainy film, of bleached-out black and white, is the excitement of witnessing events too momentous for the medium assigned to record them."
