5 of the BEST Beaver Stadium Crowd Reactions - Penn State Nittany Lion Football Roars at the Beav

  • Penn State Nittany Lion Football's greatest moments in Beaver Stadium History. (My Top 5)
    Loudest Defensive Series - Penn State VS Rutgers 2015
    5) Derrick Williams Electrifies Beaver Stadium WhiteHouse crowd, going 76 yards returning a Notre Dame Punt in the 2nd quarter VS the Fighting Irish. The Nittany Lions were avenging a 41-17 loss to the Irish from a year earlier (2006) in South Bend. The all time series between Penn State and Notre Dame is tied at 9 each with 1 tie. Both schools longest winning streaks in the series have been 3 games each. The Largest margin of Victory for either team has been Notre Dame 44-7 in 1984, and Penn State 36-6 in 1985. (Funny how these two matchups which saw the largest victory on either side in the series took place in back to back seasons)
    4) Penn State pressures Jamal Lord during the Nittany Lion's and Cornhuskers matchup in Beaver Stadium in 2002. After review of the play, the ball clearly slipped out of the Nebraska QB's hands, a few plays later, Jamal Lord throws an interception to RIchard Gardner, that absolutely turned Beaver Stadium inside out. The pick six gave Penn State a 26-7 lead in the 3rd quarter essentially handing the Cornhuskers the knockout punch.
    3) Penn State Nebraska . 1982 was known as the best game in Beaver Stadium history (pre-whiteout era) as a game when the crowd in Happy Valley was deafening, and into the game from the start. McCloskey's catch prior to the game winning throw by Todd Blackledge has been reviewed countless times, and even as a Penn State fan I have to admit that it wasn't a catch. Regardless, those things used to come and go back in the day, and sometimes you got the call, sometimes you didn't. The win was the marque victory for the Nittany Lions in 1982 that lead to the Nittany Lions first National Title in 1982.
    2) Penn State VS Ohio State 2016, where the Nittany Lions block a punt, and a Field goal in the 4th quarter of the matchup with the 2nd ranked Buckeyes. Most people will point to the fact that Penn State would have never won this game had it not been for the blocked field goal returned for a touchdown, but people forget that Penn State had actually given up a Safety, had a field goal of their own blocked in the 1st quarter, as well as a Buckeye extra point. The Penn State Field Goal block, did give the Nittany Lions the lead, however had it not been for superb defense and a blocked punt leading to a Nittany Lions field goal, the blocked kick that lead to a Nittany Lion score would have never mattered in the first place.
    1) The reason why I chose the Penn State Ohio State game from 1997 as my most insane crowd reaction I can remember at Beaver Stadium is because at a young age, I remember watching this on the TV with my grandfather. We were both screaming at the TV as the Lions roared back to take the lead in the 4th quarter. You have to remember Penn State was ranked #1 preseason 1997, so when this game was played there was a lot riding it. Penn State as ranked #2 and Ohio State came into Beaver Stadium ranked #7. Up until that time, the matchup was one of the biggest ever in Beaver Stadium. Later that year, the Nittany Lions would host #4 Michigan still with their #2 ranking, with the Wolverines ranked two spots behind them at #4. The Wolverines came in and manhandled the Nittany Lions in all facets of the game winning by a final score of 34-8.

    I’ve been to all the big games and to this day without hesitation PSU vs OSU 2005 17-10 victory, was the most incredible atmosphere I’ve ever experienced. Not one living soul sat down that entire game, the stadium had a slight rock to it the entire night from the entire crowd jumping up and down the whole time. It was the best sporting event I’ve ever been too. Not only did the student section invade the field at 00:00 but so did many fans. I got on to the field and grabbed a nice chunk of the playing field, which I have in a vacuum sealed jar to this day🤘

      My Freshman year, I'll certainly never forget it! We had been anticipating the matchup from when they announced it would be a night game over the summer, and I remember looking at the schedule and thinking it was doable for them to be 5-0 when the Buckeyes came calling. Every play was so intense. Poz and Connor tracking down Troy Smith time and time again. Gives me chills.
      Thanks for watching

      I was also at that game. I sat write next to the student section. After the game everyone was hugging each other. Awesome. Best PSU game I have ever been to. I have gone to 1 game every year since 1994.

      I was also at the big house in 94 when Mr. Kerry Collins threw the game winning touchdown pass to Bobby Ingram, and obviously it wasn't loud then, but when Tyrone Wheatley had a touchdown run, it didn't sound close to as loud as Happy Valley, at all!!!!

      I was there and on the field after the game. I’ve never experienced another game like that one in my life. That stadium was bouncing the entire game. My ears were ringing and I lost my voice by the end of the game!

    • @KeystoneState
      @KeystoneState  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Valid point, however the stadium probably only had about 80k in when that play happened. Personally, the Ohio State game in 1997 stands out to me because it was the first game I can remember where the stadium actually lost it's Shit.. I'm about to post another video with 5 more of my favorite moments. If you haven't already, subscribe you don't miss it. Love the feedback!

      That was my senior year and I agree with you. It got to a point where we expected to destroy everyone and there weren't too many plays that needed our help. The best opponent, OSU, we scored 63 on them! It wasn't even close. The Michigan game on the road was the only real test. And then there was the Illinois "drive"....

    • @KeystoneState
      @KeystoneState  6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      And then 2000, 2001, 2003, 2004 happened, and #weare ROARED back. I think our fan base realized that football sucks when you constantly lose.... and you literally, get your ass kicked. Literally.
      Penn State didn't become the most insane setting in college football over nothing... It took 4 LOUSY seasons of football to kickstart our fanbase. It was during #thedarkyears that Penn State found it's identity in the world of home field advantages.
      I love it.
      BTW...
      I read in #LairoftheLion that it actually took the students a few YEARS of yelling WE!ARE! without a response from the West Side. In the 1970's, there was no social media, no dialogue that everyone could contribute too... It took a few years to make half of Beaver Stadium know that they wanted the alumni to say #PENNSTATE back to their #WEARE!
      Now the #WhiteOut is a setting in college football and in sports in general, that doesn't even come close to being replicated.

    • @KeystoneState

      The Media would lead you to believe we struggled with Indiana too... which is complete B/S.... Cost us the Natty Title.

    • @KeystoneState

      You know it's funny... After we beat Miami on the road, things really did seem to fall apart, it just took until the Minnesota game for it to actually set in, when someone we faced could come up with JUST enough offense to get a Win, because our defense was SICK. The only times they really struggled were when the offense put them in vicarious situations. I feel like In 2018, if you look hard enough you can pretty much find ANY college football highlight online for every power 5 team. I'm a Penn State football re-play junkie, and I've yet to find a posted compilation of highlights from our 23-10 victory over Ohio State that year. It's like a win that has been erased from history.
      This is pretty much all I've been able to find:
      Last Meeting
      A superlative defensive effort and 211 yards rushing by Eric McCoo propelled Penn State to a 23-10 win over Ohio State on Oct. 16, 1999 in State College
      The Nittany Lions limited the Buckeyes to 143 yards -- 65 rushing and 78 passing -- and no offensive touchdowns. Ohio State managed just 11 first downs and did not advance past the PSU 29-yard line.
      McCoo caught a 20-yard pass and ran for 53 yards on Penn State's two first plays to set the tone. McCoo became just the sixth Lion with multiple 200-yard rushing games and had four carries of 20 yards or more, accumulating 258 all-purpose yards.
      Penn State led just 13-10 at halftime, but a five-yard naked bootleg by Rashard Casey and Travis Forney field goal, his third of the game, combined with the superb defensive effort sealed the win. Casey was 11 of 15 for 109 yards."

    Good list but very prejudiced to recent games. Nov. 21, 1987 - Notre Dame ranked No. 1 and undefeated. Happy Valley in deep freeze - 20 below zero with 30 mph winds. ND scores with seconds left and down by one decides to go for two (this was before overtime play). PSU stops them and wins by 1. You should also look at Cappelletti's four-TD game against WVU for his ailing brother Joey.

    • @KeystoneState

      +ctgprguy the list was put together with an emphasis on the stadium's reaction to the play, not necessarily the play or the player stats specifically, but I appreciate the feedback. I'm working on posting another collection of Beaver Stadiums best, so stay tuned! Thanks again for watching

    05 vs OSU was the best football atmosphere I’ve ever been in. Season ticket holder for over 30 years and we were at the 2016 scoop 6 game. I’m telling you, god as my witness, not one ass was in a seat that entire night. It was incredible. When Poz intercepted Troy Smith, people were crying with rejoice, literally. It was such a great moment. I framed the ticket stubs and have a chunk of the field in a jar to this day from storming the field. We are!!!

    • @KeystoneState
      @KeystoneState  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I was at both games as well, and I"d say I have to agree. In all honesty, I think I re-watched the 2005 OSU game so many times that I'm somewhat numb to it. Lowry's interception return was insane too...Tamba's sack brought the house down. Thanks for watching!

    • @TM-bn8pv
      @TM-bn8pv 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      I am also a longtime ticket holder and I'd agree. We have similar stories! I stormed the field to with my brother as we had tickets right around the 45 behind PSU bench. And I found something on the field that I still have to this day, kept away in a box. Almost getting maced, which a teen did right near us, we ended up helping him off and ran into a guy who owned one of the bars downtown, who also helped the kid with water from the sidelines. But, as we were walking to the sidelines with the maced kid, I looked down and found a Kennedy Half Dollar laying their with it having landed on JFK side at some point. I have kept that half dollar since, and have brought it out on rare occasions and zipped away so I wouldn't lose it. My father is a arm cgair historian of JFK, so since a kid I've also read up on JFK heavily. It's just one of those little things you hear about and think its a BS nade up story, and I still can't believe it 'til this day.

      I'm about to post a video highlighting that moment in the 2005 Ohio State game.. From Tony Hunt's run getting us closer, Mrobs scramble, the speed of D-Wheels, the TD, the Zombie nation when Brutus got the ball, the Sack of Troy Smith on first down, the incomplete, then the Int By lowry, was the most insane series of plays ever at Beaver Stadium. Our fan case was SOO hungry for a quality win. Every in the stadium was hoarse for a week!

    someone else mentioned the 94 team being SO good that the crowd was sometimes less than crazy because we were smoking so many opponents. and I do agree. but there were 2 times that the crowd REALLY stood out and went APE$#!% !!! The USC game was still early and they had just had a big write up in sports illustrated that they were back. Ki-Jana broke this amazing run and the stadium ERUPTED !!!!! a short time later Freddie Scott caught a bomb from Kerry Collins and again the crowd was SO HYPED !! In the last game of the year again MSU we just got a turnover and on the very first play back on offense Kerry Collins bombed to Bobby Engram and we all knew we were going to the Rose Bowl for a shot at the Natty !! the players and crowd were AMAZINGLY euphoric !!!! hugs, laughs, jumping up and down ...everything was so great to see !! these are great videos !!! nice work !!!!!!!!!!

    I have been to over 100 games. There are 3 moments that will always stand out from the games I went to. The loudest I ever heard it in there was 2005 Tamba's fumble recovery against OSU, followed by Gardners INT against Nebraska in 2002, 3rd would be the entire crowd going "no more Heisman" when Purdue lost in Happy Valley with Drew Brees. I remember security and TV thought people were shaking the camera towers and went on the field, however it was the noise! The blocked kick would be the honorable mention for me. I mean that place went nuts, but I cannot ever remember it any louder than those 3. I couldn't speak for a week after the 2005 game, honestly that stadium was the most ridiculous I ever seen it that night. Gardner's interception, the crowd went crazy because they were hammered drunk and super pissed at the refs. I remember shit flying for like 5 minutes in celebration out of the press boxes and upper decks. I could go on and on about special moments in that stadium, but those 3 were unreal.

    The 2005 Ohio State game should be in the top 3. I was at that game and literally the entire game the crowd stood as it was defining in Beaver Stadium. After that game Beaver Stadium was ranked one of the must see places to watch a football game in the country and was called the greatest show on turf. ESPN did a special the next week, because College Game Day was at the game, and the Ohio State players said they couldn't even hear plays being called from the huddle throughout the game. I have been privileged enough to attend hundreds of Penn State games and that game was the most memorable that I have ever been too.

    • @KeystoneState
      @KeystoneState  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      I don't disagree with you. It was insane. I did a better job of highlighting the environment VS Ohio State in 2005 in Part II of this series. I've been to hundreds of games as well, and for some reason, when I put this first video together the Ohio State game in 2005 didn't stand out to me like it used to. The Nittany Nation was out for blood during that game in 2005, and it wasn't just the Ohio State game... The Minnesota & Wisconsin games in 2005 were electric as well.
      I've re-watched Penn State Ohio State 2005 dozens of times, and it's by far my favorite game. Check out this video for the clip from D-Wheels TD in the 2nd Quarter through M-Robs option Keeper after Lowry's near pick 6 of Troy Smith on the following series.
      Thanks so much for watching! I appreciate your feedback. Subscribe to my channel for more highlight vids! I'll be posting regularly throughout the season. #WEARE!

      I think we've got a chance to break the stadium record at least twice this season depending on the weather. I could see Ohio State and Michigan State being up over 110k as well as Wisconsin later in the year.... I'm already jacked for the Ohio State game. That is going to be entirely off the charts. It's already the most expensive ticket in Beaver Stadium history. Fingers crossed they do the right thing, and make it at night.

      StateLionPro Agreed. I graduated last year and after seeing this year’s schedule made me wish that the schedules were switched. I honestly believe that we don’t lose to OSU or MSU at home. This year, OSU, MSU, WISC, IOWA and MICH are must wins. Especially the ones at home.

    • @KeystoneState
      @KeystoneState  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      If Penn State finishes the season unbeaten at home.... Where we would then be riding a 21 game winning streak in #BeaverStadium. Even if we lost to Michigan on the road... I could still see us getting in. First things first, we have HAVE to take care of App St. (obviously) and PITT on the road. The fact that it's a night game makes it tougher... but remembering how we lost in 2016, I know Trace McSorley won't be over looking anyone this year, especially Pitt! If you haven't already, would you mind subscribing to my channel? I'll be uploading content every other day until the season starts.... Including more videos like this one! I'll get Allen Robinson's catch in the next one for sure.

    I thought the 2005 game was insanely loud!!! Literally, the rafters were shaking, Kirk Herby and Fowler said after that game, it is by far the loudest and best college football atmosphere on the planet!!! They still say that by the way!!! Lol

    #3 - the one you say isn't a catch - the big "3" on the screen makes it harder to see, and the camera work is bad, only showing the catch at the last second. I can't find a replay of this anywhere.
    With that being said, you don't need two feet in in college for it to be a catch. I don't know what the NCAA rules were in 1982 regarding a catch, and I don't know if all of that stuff about control and everything else that we see today was in there. But what we can see is that both officials on that side immediately ruled it a catch, and we can also see that Tom Osborne didn't put up any kind of a fight, at all.
    Even with instant replay, they still get it wrong all the time. It's even more noticeable now.
    Also, the blocked punt for touchdown against OSU was 2012, not 2014.

      @KeystoneState  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes, You're correct... I digress, it absolutely should have been. I missed that game back in 2013, so it doesn't have the special place in my heart as some of the other victories do. I included Robinson's catch in part II, which I posted two days ago. You can check that video out here: th-cam.com/video/fY0buBRTW4c/w-d-xo.html - As always I appreciate all feedback! • @KeystoneState
      @KeystoneState  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      They were all fantastic plays. When I think about these moments in Beaver Stadium I try to put in perspective the scope of the victory or the play. When we beat Michigan in 2013, you have to realize how seriously out manned we were with the sanctions and scholarship reductions.
      The 2005 was insane, and as I experienced it as a Freshman in the student section I take a lot of pride in the fact that the student body took it upon themselves to chnage the game and really get the word out that we were doing something not a lot of other schools did before. It might see simple now, but back in 2004,2005 it wasn't reasy to get everyone to coordinate to wear the same colors. There was so no social media to spread the word, so everything had to be done word of mouth.
      Regardless, arguing over this kind of things is apples vs oranges to me. Either I was at the game I chose to showcase, so it hold a special place in my blue and white soul, or the result of the game was responsible for turning the program around from a national perspective. You may love a game for one of the many reasons, i've been at some great games, however got stuck around so shitty people "the DOWN IN FRONT crowd" I've also been to some lackluster opponents and the fans that were in our section mde the game a blast, it all just depends!
      The one silver lining because of the sanctions Penn State was unlawfully dealt, was that it rid the program of the boo bird, down in front fans. With more season tickets sold in the past two, than in the history of the program, I hope the new fan base that want to call beaver Stadium home Saturdays a year are up for a good time,... This is the toughest home schedule Penn State has ever had, we need to be deafening EVERY GAME!

      I was at the Penn State Ohio State game in 1997, one of my first actually, so that game holds some personal sentimental value. I'd have no issues with the upset of Marino's #2 ranked Panthers in 82 if you put together your top moments. Let's see it!

    • @DCAbsolutJohn1

      Keystone State - I was there too - nothing was anyone quite like Aaron Harris that year IMO. Spinning and stumblin the whole way in. Too bad he blew his knee against Minn. that year. That moment in that game was the quietest I ever heard that stadium.
      Been going to games since 1979. Also saw PSU destroy the likes of Herschel Walker, Flutie, and Brady.
      Surprised they didn’t rank any student section A$$-hooooole
      Or the opening 1999 shellacking of #2 Auburn.

    • @KeystoneState
      @KeystoneState  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@DCAbsolutJohn1 You mean the Arizona shellacking in 1999? I guess I shoulda been clearer about what my ranking qualifications were... loudness, overall atmosphere, craziness of a specific play VS the craziness of the entirety of a game? ... There are some games that were absolutely deafening from start to finish, that I'd list in my top 5 that may surprise some people. For example Minnesota in 2005 was extremely loud the ENTIRE game. The crowd, especially the student section knew that a win likely got us game day for the first time since 1999, (VS Arizona)... so there was no way we were dropping a home game to Minehaha... From the opening kickoff the team and crowd whipped up on the gophers on each snap.
      Specific plays? ... the missed field goal VS Pitt a couple weeks ago was a crazy moment in an otherwise ho hum game where people felt more anxiety than they did excitement... There's the type of moment at the Beav when things get so loud, they don't seem loud for the split section the noise is deafening.... Blocked Field goal VS Ohio State 2016, Richard Gardner pick 6 Nebraska, doinked field goal by Pitt in 2019 are all examples of that.
      I need to make a new video haha.. you should subscribe if you haven't already so you don't miss it!

    • @DCAbsolutJohn1
      @DCAbsolutJohn1 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Keystone State - I would say do it. Maybe do a video of all the times Beaver stadium’s 12th man changed the game. There’s a load of good examples I’m sure. It’s just finding them.
      The final JoePa game vs. Northwestern in 2011 where it was horrible weather, cold and raining but the crowd moved behind the goalposts and made the kicker miss - also hitting the upright.
      Others would be the 1999 game vs. Northwestern
      The 1995 snow bowl vs Michigan - game had to stop due to snowballs hitting the Michigan players. JoePa was pissed.
      There have to be others like whiteouts where there crowd was just so loud the opposing offense couldn’t execute.
