The first time I saw that Sleep Token did a cover of Hey Ya, I thought it was a goof. Like they were trolling us. But, then I listened to it and was thoroughly blown away. This is the epitome of what a cover is meant to be. Transformative but true to its origin. It makes you listen to something you've heard a dozen times and see it in an entirely new light. Makes you find magic and meaning in the same words you always thought were just empty lyrics. This is art in its purest form. Bravo, lads.

    My baby don't mess around
    Because she loves me so
And this I know for sure
    But does she really wanna
But can't stand to see me
    Walk out the door
Don't try to fight the feelin'
    'Cause the thought alone
    Is killing me right now
Thank God for mom and dad
    For sticking two together
    'Cause we don't know how
    Hey ya
    Hey ya
    Hey ya
    Hey ya
    You think you've got it
Oh, you think you've got it
But got it just don't get it
    When there's nothing at all
    We get together
    Oh, we get together
    But separate's always better
    When there's feelings involved
And they say that "Nothing is forever"
Then what makes love the exception
Why are we so in denial
When we know that we're not happy here
    Hey ya
    Hey ya
    Hey ya
    Hey ya

@@churchc1ty233 There are huge leaps in vocal strength and approach between each release. He has learned to use his chest, throat and nasal passages very differently over the years, and has tripled down on the stylistic vamping that was only hinted at in early stuff like this. It's always been heavily produced from day one - that part hasn't changed at all. The only rock singer I can think of who made a larger transition is Jim Atkins of Jimmy Eat World, whose voice was literally unrecognizable when he was the screechy, nasal backup singer on their really early 7" indie stuff, compared to when he really figured out how to operate his physiology properly in 2000.

"Hey Ya" is a BRILLIANT song; its got a happy energy but its DARK; the lyrics are emotionally complex, the song itself is in 11/4, not 4/4 so its NOT an even rhythm but its so subtle few people notice and people happily dance (off beat 😁) to it, it's just an amazing composition!

    • @TheUsernameDenied
      @TheUsernameDenied 5 ปีที่แล้ว +31

The song is written in a way which makes you want to dance and have fun, regardless of what they are actually singing. You don't actually care about the emotions in the lyrics of the song, just the beat that goes along with it.
"y'all don't want to hear me, ya just want to dance"
"Don't want to meet your daddy (oh ohh), just want you in my caddy (oh ohh)"
It's a song about just wanting the good times with a girl and ignoring the problems/commitment. Just like we just want to dance to Hey ya and ignore what the song is telling us in the lyrics.

How I had missed this before a few months ago, I’m not sure. In MY opinion (and many others here in the comment section), this is how it always should have been. It is beautiful in this version. The original is just fine for what it is and I mean no disrespect to Outkast or their fans. Sleep Token took a very popular song and presented it in a different style that makes the song more meaningful. And as many of us age, we find that listening to popular songs of the past, and really HEARING them, it opens your eyes and changes everything. Sleep Token, thank you!

    My baby don't mess around
    Because she loves me so
And this I know for sure
But does she really want it
But can't stand to see me walk out the door?
Don't try to fight the feeling
    Cause the thought alone is
    Killing me right now
Thank God for Mom and Dad
    For sticking through together
    Cause we don't know how
Hey ya! Hey ya! Hey ya! Hey ya!
    You think you've got it
Oh, you think you've got it
But "got it" just don't get it
'Til there's nothing at all we get together
    Oh, we get together
    But separate's always better
    When there's feelings involved
And they say that "Nothing is forever"
Then what makes, love the exception?
Oh why oh why oh why are we so in denial
When we know that we're not happy here?
Hey ya! Hey ya hey ya! Hey ya
    Hey ya oh, hey ya
