Are variegated Hoya special anymore?

- I have been seeing more and more variegated Hoya and I got this feeling that they are not so special anymore, something I definitely did not feel when I first started getting some of my first variegated Hoya. I wanted to talk about this today and our perception what is a special Hoya.

With the current mad state of “everything variegated”, I really started appreciating my regular green Hoyas and all other greenies in my collection so much more. Totally over variegation which automatically made the hobby I love so much a whole lotta easier and enjoyable.
Yes, I am still "digesting" how awesome all of the plants I have are and I don't feel such a need like before to get all the new ones on the block. Which is good I suppose :)
Couldn’t agree more with everything you’ve said here. Thank you for this video. Small side note in case you didn’t know already, the Hoya Polyneura outer var was originally created here in NZ by a Eion Scarrow. Sadly he’s passed away in 2013 but his wife still has the original mother plant.
All the points you make are very valid. I don’t have the money to splurge on the fancy, new variegated Hoyas so that’s not an issue. I do so enjoy my recently purchased ‘Crimson Princess’, the variegation and pink stems are just delightful. It may be an oldie and unfashionable, but I personally really love it and have little interest in the latest variegated Hoya. 🌿💕😊

I like or "love" all my Hoyas (variegated or not). I guess this is a +(plus) and I no longer am sad that I'm not an expert, or collector, or rich. I just buy ones that I like and don't have and can afford. I know I say this every time...but I really enjoy your videos. Thank you!

Firstly I love your videos, your sense of humour makes me smile ❤. Although i do love variegated plants, i could've agree more in that 'they' are trying to variegate just about everything, often to the detriment of the plants.
I live in Antalya, Turkey, and bought my Hoya carnosa in 2020. It had a mix of a classic green leaf and a variegated Crimson Princess. Unfortunately, my Hoya died. I successfully propagated new plants from the green cuttings, but my variegated cuttings died. I could no longer find the Crimson Princess in 2022. I ordered one online, which was imported. It has been thriving, thankfully,. I don't understand why some people are "over" this type of plant. I find the variegated Hoya crimson princess so very beautiful. It is my favorite Hoya, especially with the red tints. Also, it was not expensive. Perhaps it depends on where you are.
I pretty much always wait until a Hoya can be found at 3 or 4 inches for $20. :) So until then, I will admire from afar. I look forward to variegations being less expensive, like Pothos.
Well sad and so true. I‘m less older and love watching your postings. I‘m not a collector, my plants are not rare and not expensive. What I Recognized in the past years, that a lot of people started collecting plants. Mainly during Corona. I did a Little Research, the branch has a volume of 2.7 bill Euro within the EU. This is massive if you consider you can buy plants for 2-5 €. Having sad that, what i Further viewed, a lot of young collectors try to sell their Collections currently. I can understand that, i mean it is Summer, holiday season, i prefer travveling Instead of taking care of plants, eather.
So before you buy a new plant check out market places. Even if they try to amortize the prices, you can find a lot of plants for Nothing (compared) especially airoids. Pls do not waste ressources. Next generations will be greatful.
For all the others, stop thinking a plant is an Investment, it is not. Corona is over, a lot of People will stop buying plants. Let us Return to the 70 s were we shared our cuttings. This would impact the high prices. Stopp buying new expensive plants. 😮 thanks

I'm still fairly new to collecting hoyas (about 2 months in) and considering that I'm literally just driving from a plant sale with a lil baby Krimson Princess, safe to say variegation is special to me 😊

I have to agree! I love hoyas but the prices on some are unbelievable! I have saved for months sometimes to buy something only to find that after buying it the price dropped so dramatically, that I just felt cheated. Now I just select plants I really want and if I have to wait a few years, we'll so be it. Looking forward to seeing what carnosa Madara comes down to.
Oh I heard that one is very expensive! It is not even available in Europe, so I will revisit that in 10 years maybe :D Not that I am actually looking into getting one. But yes, I think right now it is better to wait :)
I love my variegated plants but not enough to spend loads of $$$. Plus, many variegated options are so much more sensitive than the green versions.

To answer your question i agree with you on variegated hoyas i really like the ones that i bought initially (lisa, kerri) but the new ones don't really get my attention along as their price tag 😅

So true. People need to step back and decide if they even like the way a variegated plant looks. I just don’t like many of the inner variegated Hoyas that are just yellow. It’s not nice. I do like margins, especially if they are black. And the ghost/silver types. But I’m not paying more for it, I’ll wait.

I can surely remember when was the last time I was excited about a variegated hoya, and it was when you made a haul video with those pretty variegated hoya lacunosa, which is still on my wishlist. And I just added hoya sulawesiana variegated to the wishlist also :))))
Couldn’t aggree more 👍🏻 I’ve started to wait for a while if considering getting a new specie and see how it goes with both the price point and variegation/splash wise if it make sense. At the end I decide which form I like the most and I end up getting only that one for the most of the time now 👍🏻

SUCH a sensible and intelligent analysis, I found myself exclaiming YESS!! EXACTLY!! throughout...lol. a 'stable and sustainable' market - exactly. People should absolutely be able to make a living doing what we love, growing plants, and with such an insanely unstable market that is made hard. I also like the distinction between novel and rare, that's it exactly.

I have seen not long ago that Costa farms here in the US sold mauna loa compacta for like under $20 for a full hanging basket! Now you can pay huge prices, sometimes over $100 for a rooted single strand. It is so confusing to me the price swings! Ugh This was a great video! Thank you!
I appreciate your good points.. I have never really been a fan of variegation. I have had houseplants for over 3 decades and have only had 1 variegated and it’s just my ficus benjamina that I paid $9.99 for over 4years ago.oh actually I am fibbing 😮 I have an outervarigated Hoya Bella 😊
Same thing here in New England there is not much for Hoya in our stores either except for some greenhouses.

I only have 2 hoya that is variegated and it is the Hoya Heuschkeliana Albomarginata and the Hoya crimson queen, I absolutely love it so much.
I do really love variegated hoyas and variegated plants in general, but I also don't need and cannot afford the latest new thing. I was thinking recently that I probably do not need more outer variegated hoyas as many of them pretty much look the same. I am trying to only add hoyas that are unique and different than hoyas that I already have.

My very first hoya ever was Carnosa Compacta Variegata that I got my dad to buy me when I was a kid. I don't remember when that was nor in what manner I killed it (I'm guessing early 80's and underwatering), but I know Dad didn't splash out an exorbitant amount of money for it because that ain't how Dad rolled. I was astounded when I saw how much they were going for a couple of years ago since I knew they had been around for many years. I am still drawn to variegated plants to an extent, but I won't buy a plant just because it's variegated nor because it's the new "must-have" that people are freaking out about. I have to live with it and care for it, so I need to find it beautiful and/or interesting or I can't be bothered.
That is a great way to look at things! :) Yes, both 'Regalis' (the outer variegated carnosa 'Compacta') and the 'Mauna Loa' (inner variegated carnosa 'Compacta') were QUITE expensive until 2-3 years ago. I can honestly understand 'Regalis', that plant does not grow :D 'Mauna Loa' is for me a fantasitc grower and I love both of them. :) They have been pattented in the late 70s or so, and have been around for a while. :) I am sure the interest dropped in Hoya and the stock got very low probably at one point... and then you get the demand & availability story. IMO, since they were widely cultivated before, I am sure they can propagate them in large quantities now as well :) I have seen some photos from the 70s - some of the plants were quite small, but I think that is okay too :) Recently, there have been big pots of 'Mauna Loa' in Europe, and they were going around for $100 - quite a lot. There are 5-6 cuttings in there with 40cm or so of vines, so maybe when shared with friends it's not too much. I am not sure if there were larger plants back in the 80s. Was your plant bigger or smaller? If you perhaps remember :) I love hearing these stories!
@@BasiePlants Oddly, I remember where we bought it (supermarket) and what the tag said (Jacob's Ladder. Wildly inaccurate.), but I don't really remember how big it was. It definitely had at least one trailing vine that was about 6"-8" long. Currently, I have two green Compactas (a larger multi-vine pot and smaller "insurance plant" in case the big one bites it) and two 'Regalis' (Regali?) (I had a smaller one, but found a big multi-vine one at a good price later). The green ones definitely grow faster than the 'Regalises' (seriously, what is the plural here?), but they are making progress, so we'll call it a win. I've never seen a 'Mauna Loa' in any of my local (Central Ohio) nurseries, but I'll probably get it eventually. Guessing the prices will drop now that people can obsess about 'Jodie's Silver.' :)

Thank you, Miro, for being so sensible and for your talking points on this topic of variegated Hoyas and the ridiculous prices they demand because there are collectors who are easy targets for high-pricing and gimme gimme gimme!😩🙃Like anything that can cause a *buzz* ~~addiction and FOMO make folks go cray cray for the next fix, the next New Thang, the latest novel Hoya at any cost!😂🤦🏻♀️🤪 PlantHos notwithstanding, I’ve been recovered from my Orchid addiction for over a decade, the struggle was real, and Hoyas can be a weakness for me, but over the years, I’ve cultivated Self-control and patience. I wait and I’ll find a coveted Hoya at a very reasonable price. It’s a bummer that the Plant Community enables greed, fraudulent practises, and egomaniacal offering and chasing of the coolest whatevers-I just don’t fall for any of it! 🙄😂 .

As about prices, and I am by no means an expert on hoyas, or economy for that matter, novelty hoyas are like top fashion items that not everyone can have, but after a while everyone wants.
If I see a certain plant that I really love and its price is high, maybe I would be tempted to buy it anyway, but novelties - not.
I am glad to hear that :) I am not denying that some cultivars perhaps do "deserve" a higher price, but I think too many get that high price just because they are new and people get the wrong impression. I especially think it is disappointing when someone buys a plant and within a year it drops 10x or more in price. To me, it doesn't seem like a fair system. Of course, no one is pushing you to buy anything, but I feel this is not the case for many other industries.

Another thing bothering me recently is Hoya Liniaris, I ordered some cuttings and rooted for a friend a few months ago for $1.00 each and failed to get some for me, went to order me some a few days ago and they are asking $15.00 for a 3 node cutting. What happened there? I feel like that is not right.
Variegation is a dim a dozen now. The Hoya boom has truly gone. I am not paying anything more than $50 lol. The prices are silly and dropping super fast. I am resizing my collection. Less is best. I am sick of them dying in winter. Root rot chop and start and then die again.😂😂😂
Oh yes! I remember seeing the argentine princess on etsy for like $1,000 US at one point, now it’s a hundred or more. Too crazy 😮.

For all the small businesses out there trying to keep up with the market it seems like it could end their business very quickly because of the drastic drops in prices. I'm just a buyer and I find it sometimes overwhelming to see how many new varieties are out there. Oversaturation usually leads to a big slump and I think that's going to happen.
The hoya economy, and I guess the entire houseplant economy, over the past three years is so interesting to deep dive into. With a lot more "popular" plants being tissue cultured now, the aroid market has taken a nosedive. I think in that market, variegation holds a higher value because it cannot be reliably TC'd (or at least not as far as I am aware of). In the hoya market though, we hadn't seen a ton of tissue culturing up until now. I have noticed that there have been more and more of certain species like variegated heuschkeliana, serpens, parviflora, etc popping up in shops that traditionally import TCd plants. It makes me think that all of these new variegated hoya species/cultivars are the result of mutant TCs. I may be completely wrong, but that was the first thought that came to mind with everything coming out with a variegated or silver version now.

I have a variegated Bella, but I don’t love my green Bella any less. I was actually more excited to come across a Krohniana Black. I just love it. Do we need a world of lemon lime plants?
I have never been a chaser of variegated plants. They always looked flawed to me. As they say beauty is in the eye of the beholder. I prefer species (rather than hybrids) as nature produced them over time without the variegation.
I mostly also like the species but there are some hybrids and variegated plants I will want :) But I will definitely be more of a species- chaser :)
It does seem less special when every plant comes in a variegated version.
I won’t pay more than 20-25$ for a plant. However I did pay 40 for a 4” string of turtles and 32 for 4” string of dolphins and do feel that was robbery prices
When I open a social media or a website and view a sea of albos and variegatas, it doesn't interest me anymore. It's looking more common or basic.
Miro, what I Find kind of incredible is how many hoyas being sold here in my country are imported and priced way up high, considering that Majority of the hoyas we know (if I’m not mistaken) are endemic to my country, the Philippines. I Find it so frustrating and kind of infuriating.. imagine na endemic Hoya being imported from Europe and sold here at a very high price !!
Honestly I have come to love splash much more than variegation. Only when I see that the variegation is stable or mostly stable do I take that into consideration when looking for new Hoyas. Even in my short time collecting them I have have had plants revert and it is always annoying.
I never was a big fan of variegated hoyas. I have around 40 to 50 species and only a few cultivars like tequila sunrise, none of them is variegated.
Variegated plants can be expensive, they can lose the variegation, and they grow slower than regular green plants.
And for me, no variegated Hoya can be prettier than a Hoya Hanhiae or funghii in full bloom, filling the house with lovely scent.
I do have quite a few variegated ones and other crosses. I do find some of them interesting, but a lot of them I could also do without. I am interested in getting all the possible clones of a certain species, but I feel that is a different thing. Oh Hoya fungii - mine is making the most gorgeous leaves at the moment. I cannot agree with hanhiae xD I grew to dislike the plant because of the markings it often gets on the leaves in higher light (for me). :D
I cannot get excited about "Argentia Princess" or "Nova Ghost." They are still terribly expensive.I did buy a variegated lacunosa. It is seriously pretty.
Yes i saw someone selling a hoya curtisii super silver i was like wtheck my hoya curtisii have splashy silver and some leaves is fully silver and for a cutting i saw a big wooping 60
Oh I have seen those! Same thoughts! and I think there even might be variegated curtisii as well. Oh, and there is a full silver serpens.
