    The farm I was on bought a brand new one. I thought it was the finest machine I ever drove. It was so comfortable. I could see no room for improvement. It was the best machine ever made.

      We had the same set-up, the farm I was working for had a 4955 when I started and we traded for a 4960. Was a fine piece of equipment that I didn't think could get better until we traded for a 8400 and I felt like Captain Kirk in that machine !

      In 1994 the 8970 Ford came out and made the 4960JD look like a garden tractor , The Genesis totally buried the Deere' !

      @@paulratzlaff2935 and then the 8000 series from John Deere came out, and they absolutely crushed the competition. in fact, I think that’s the tractor series that made Case IH go bankrupt and sell out to Fiat.

    great video...I love those series and still remember being in high school when they came out; I honestly remember having a hard time accepting that side muffler design...haha. I never realized they came that heavy from the factory and could be field weighted up to almost 25k! We own a 4755 mfwd (pictured in my thumbnail)...its my favorite looking tractor out of our 10 John Deere tractors.

    An interesting thing about the 60 Series is that they were not marketed as such in Europe. They received all the same design changes and everything, but were still badges and advertised as the 4555, 4755, and 4955 before switching over to the 8000 Series for 1995.

    We we’re running 2 4960’s pulling Bingham Brothers 4 row paratills and when we got our 8200 first year model it would out pull the 4960’s . They were all great tractors! The 8000 cabs were just way better! I ran 8400s until I got 8420’s then there was no comparison! Great videos! Thanks

    One of our neighbors bought three of these new. Within a couple of years, all three of them blew up. I think Deere was asking too much from the 466. Aesthetically, these are my favorites from the iron horse line. They say "beauty is in the eye of the beholder" but I'm not sure anyone has made a better looking tractor since the 60 series.

    • @larryludy1382
      @larryludy1382 8 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      That's exactly what I saw, deere tried to get a little too much out of the engine. My brother had a 4760 with no problems at all.

      Bull crap the 5.9 Cummins is only a 359 cubic inch vs the Deere 466 and they are cranking out 325 horse power. We have a repair shop and that 466 is as good as they get!

    • @clinkerclint
      @clinkerclint 8 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@boomer1049 as a repair shop owner, I'm sure you realize that 325hp in a pickup is WAY DIFFERENT than 325 in a tractor. I don't think White ever pushed the 5.9 over 145, did they?

    • @boomer1049
      @boomer1049 8 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@clinkerclint Well either way Deere used the 466 in the 8300 series and they did just fine. Bottom line is we just don't work on 466 engines under 10000 hrs unless someone ran it out of oil it did something stupid!

    • @clinkerclint
      @clinkerclint 8 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @@boomer1049 that has not been our experience but I'm glad you have gotten longer service from them. I don't want this to come across as someone who bashes the 466. It is literally my favorite motor of all time. I wish you could fit one in a pickup.

    John Deere use to be a good machine until they put plastic and computers in them. I like the Allis-Chalmers 8000 Series and series IV D15 and D17 propane and Gas Burner tractors. I want to get myself a D15 that runs on Propane and use a common bbq grill propane cylinder ive heard some say Allis-Chalmers was one of the best you could get during their production run or creme of the crop and were ahead of others. Nowadays for new compact tractors that in my opinion would go to Kubota or Massey Furguson. Kubota has come such a long way older tractors were always more relaible i see in my area the gulf coast region a few old 1980s John Deere tractors Fords all the Smaller farms and landscape buisnesses and plant nursuries use Kubota and John Deere Massey Furguson is Making a comeback in my area.

    Ironically with the 4960 John Deere fell behind the compeition.Case International introduced a 215 hp 7150 & Deere never responded as they are wanton to do.CaseIH replaced that with the 215hp 7250 in 1993.From the time of 1991 Agco Allis & White inroduced 215hp tractors with no green ones to match them.Ford introduced a 210hp 8970.All 10-15 hp more powerful then the 200 hp 4960.The Deere 4960s compeitors were the Case Internationl 7140 @ 195hp,Agco Allis 9695 & 9690 & the White 195 & 6195.They had to wait until 1994 instead of reacting in the meantime.

    Hahahahaha. Did you just read the pamphlet or what? The tractor was not as popular as you make it to be. The dealership I worked for said that tractor really hurt business. That tractor shouldn't have been made with the problems it had. Wiring nightmares, undersized transmission, not fuel efficient, burnt motors out, outdated cab. Tractor pulled good, but my 7140 magnum would work that tractor under. I have vast experience on both and that 4960 was a terrible tractor.

      This is the truth. The sound guard Deeres had a good run but by the time the 60 series came out they were playing second fiddle to the Magnums and it wasn't even close. They needed the 8000s in a big way.

      The under hood muffler was an attempt to modernize the tractor without spending to much money to redesign it ,until the 8000 series arrived. The new magnum series caught John deere with their pants down.
