  • The AT-PT should be ashamed to be mentioned in the same sentence as the chad AT-AP. We'll talk about why this walker is bad, and more on today's Star Wars Lore video.

    It's like a FRIDGE with LEGS, look at it's side profile it's GIGANTIC. It can't turn well, a problem shared by most walkers, it's weapons are forward facing, it has horrible visibility (You see that big "viewport" on front? That's not a viewport, that's the anti-glare panel for the viewport which is that small little slit above it.), and just LOOK at it.

      The ubermechs star wars counterpart...well not really. As bad as rep teh walking trashcans get, they least tend to do better. Especially in urban areas with arrogant clanners mocking them. Mmm wonder how various walkers from star wars do against mechs from battletech/mechwarrior.

      If it's a fridge with legs, then it's a perfectly viable military design.
      The reason being, it can withstand nuclear strikes. At least if you believe the nonsense that is Indiana Jones and the Crystal Skulls.

    • @kabob0077

      @@danielmcphee2546 The Urbanmech at least excels at what it does, and that is fighting in cramped, urban environments where other, larger mechs are far more unwieldly. Oh, and it has a Torso Twist and the pilot can see more than just what's immediately in front of him. The Trashcan is a very respectable design when you look at what it does, how cheap and easy to maintain it is, and what you can mount on the thing.

Better alternative than trying to outrun an AT-AT by foot if you ask me.

    I'd imagine the AT-PT achieves its stated 60kph top speed through a "running" action not unlike the AT-RT. We've seen in sources like Star Wars: Demolition that even the AT-ST is capable of running. Additionally, the AT-PT's lower height relative to the AT-ST is an advantage. You don't want a vehicle like that sticking up far enough to be a tempting target for the enemy, and one of its stated advantages is that the vehicle is able to access many of the same areas that infantry can, which is not true of the AT-ST.
    And this is conjecture, but I would say that the reason that mission in Rogue Squadron is so frustrating is that you have Rebel commandos stealing these things who don't actually know what they're doing - they just hopped into a vehicle that they don't know how to drive and are just doing their best. They very probably literally just don't know how to kick them into high gear.
    Additionally, those blaster cannons and concussion grenade launcher are no joke versus infantry. Though likely not as powerful as the guns on an AT-ST, they're still powered by a vehicle-sized power plant and pack enough of a punch that they're said to give a single soldier the firepower of an entire squad.
    The leg joints, though admittedly a point of vulnerability, appear to be quite robust, at least when compared with something like the AT-RT. And there is no question that the AT-PT provides better protection for its driver than the AT-RT.
    Overall, it's a vehicle meant for infantry support. Imperial walkers - as is fairly typical for Imperial equipment in general - are specialized for their roles. And in its capacity as a light infantry-support vehicle the AT-PT does well what it's designed to do.
    TL;DR: You leave my little baby walker alone.

    • @knobgobler2639
      @knobgobler2639 2 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Finally someone with some tanking knowledge. In addition the AT-PT's likely role as an infantry support vehicle would need a lower profile rather than a larger one. I think Eck doesnt take into account what dangers its missions might entail. for example in urban pacification, you are more likely to be attacked from taller heights due to buildings. Thus things like armor distribution can be very important too. Fighting in rocky, flat, or lightly hilly terrain would favor less top armor compared to front and sides or rear.

  • @aaronbosen6743
    @aaronbosen6743 2 ปีที่แล้ว +8

    It's worth noting that the AT-PT was in the legends canon, one of the *first ever* two legged walker vehicles ever employed by any faction in the setting's military, and was based in large part off of an existing utility freight and specialized maintenance or transport vehicle used in shipyards, freight facilities, ect primarily for moving standardized cargo pods between storage or delivery points, and was hastily improvised to fill a specific deficit in the republic and various republic loyal planetary militias: their lack of relatively agile vehicles that could provide crucial supporting fire while maintaining unit cohesion with ground infantry. The thing's basically a starr wars version of a forklift that had it's arms or lift ing plate removed, armor welded to it's frame and the hydraulic and electrical systems used to now operate a norrmally man portable but bulky repeating blasting system, a rudimentary sensor and communications package, ect so it could be used as the star wars equivalent of a machine gun carrier vehicle. The primary people to really use it known in setting was the crew of the katana fleet, which used it against it's own people following a hive virus going through the fleet and driving most of it homicidally mad, and several clone troopers before it was replaced with later, better more capable walker units, including the AT-PTE, a purpose built version that uniquely for smaller walkers, ect.
    Part of the reason why the AT-PT has such complex legs is because much like the civilian walker vehicles it was based off of it's designed to be able to raise and lower it's height for additional visibility, more cover, ect to better let it's pilot manipuate objects in it's environment, ect. That this wasn't as much of an advantage as a set height to begin with was literally learned by the republic and later empire from this vehicle. So yeah. Flawed vehicle certainly, but, that tends to happen with hastily thrown in proofs of concept.

      what I'm reading from that top post in this chain is that in legends, the AT-PT was Star Wars' Mackie, only done with typical Imperial... competence... and several dozen tons lighter... not that the Mackie was all THAT great in the grand scheme of 'Mechs from the Inner Sphere.

    • @aaronbosen6743
      @aaronbosen6743 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@diabreon3094 No. Closest actual mech from battletech to it in terms of weight, size, equivalent armanents, mission role ect is probably an ultralight industrial mech like the Exo with a machine gun and some cheap commercial grade armor mounted on it being used by a particularly down on their luck mercenary company or planetary militia's infantry or mechanized infantry that for whatever reason can't get a wheeled APC or even flatbed truck to mount a far cheaper, easier to arrmor and keep machine gun array on instead. the AT-ST in comparrison is pretty much an arbiter, and the AT-AT The Mackie was designed specifically to compete against then ubiquitous and quite successful tanks and support aircraft, and had many of them of the Terran hegoenomy/early Star League era beat out on sheer armor performance though not necessarily always speed. It really only sucks in comparrison to later better built or more specialized mechs.
      Star Wars doesn't really have perfect equivalents between the roles and capabilities mechs show in many settings. When arguable mech type vehicles show up at all, they're usually either specifically designed with infantry support in mind (The AT-PTE, the AT-PTE, which is simply a version of the AT-PT that was upgraded to be less derpy, and more functional, including having a double light repeating blaster turret mounted underneath the chin, and a raised cabin section mounted *above* the legs and gyro, more similar to both the AT-ST and most humanoid style mechs in Battletech) AT-ST or at least as much as terror weapons (the AT-AT, MTAT, ect) or pretty much only in the late first Republic era, as an equivalent or escort to already existent hovertanks generally for the fact that they can operrate in conditions repulsorlift craft can't. A small handful of worlds in the Star Wars setting also have weird electromagnetic conditions which actively interfere with repulsorlift vehicles being able to operate, though most non repulsorlift based vehicles still function just fine. Many repulsor lift vehicles, which since they directly repel gravity to function also work best in conditions very similar to "galactic standard" gravity ranges for inhabited worlds, meaning you can sometimes run into unexpected problems if a world or moon has to light or to heavy of gravity, mostly along the lines of the vehicle engine now being to powerful, or not powerrful enough.
      Whereas walkers can work on almost all terrain or in almost all gravitational conditions barring those so extreme as to prevent both vehicle and crew from having any chance in hell of surviving thep lanetary conditions to begin with.
      So walkers in setting basically tend to be pretty specialized vehicles. Not the generalist combatant units like in Battletech.

    I've always loved the AT-PTs, as much as I also hated that mission...
    However, being realistic about them being an early walker design, they're less than ideal in most instances but I could see them being useful to carry cargo or supplies while keeping a lower profile. I can also see them being useful in some harsher environments where a sealed cabin would be beneficial over some other units.
    I imagine that some could be retrofitted with better sensor arrays or weapons and visibility, but on a mass scale likely not worth it.
    I also don't really see them being on the front lines, either. They're definitely just a small, outdated, support-class walker at best.

    I'm sorry, are you insulting my precious AT-PT by pointing out all of its flaws?
    You are absolutely not wrong in any of them. With its wide side profile, meh sensors, slow turn rate, poor visibility for the pilot, cramped cockpit, and laughable armaments in the face of anything its size, it is a terrible walker.
    Its much like trying to defend a Victory Class Star Destroyer when comparing it to any other Star Destroyer. Its flaws outweigh its strengths.
    But I enjoy my scrappy units anyway. =P

    I just hate walkers in Star Wars.....in any Sci-fi movie or video game (Command & Conquer: Tiberium Sun).
    I would prefer hover low to mid air vessels, something similar to Jabba's Sail barge, only militarized. You've got the armor, the speed, the height advantage, lower cost for patrol duties compared to a star ship, and if you kept the sail, being basically a friction-less vessel, using the wind would allow other functions to only operate when necessary, lowering cost even more.
    I imagine a Rebel hover fleet going between cities on Tatoonie, battling it out with an Imperial hover fleet, while the orbital just sits back and watch.....Oh good Lord, that would be a great scene in a movie or show, something like the age of sail, only upgraded.

  • @delta5297

    I'd say the AT-PT makes more sense than other walkers. It's small and got that low profile...unlike the AT-ST and AT-AT which would just be giant missile magnets.

    Thats around 37 miles an hour, thats not that rediculous really. Depending on what it weighs. It might be light and able to pivot fast, that might be one of its main advantages. It says it can also climb a 45 degree angle. Its classed as a Light all terrain personal transport. So yeah it seems being small somewhat fast and nimble are supposed to be part of its features. At-st's are claimed to move at 90 kmh/55 mph, to me thats even more unbeleivable then these moving 37 mph. I would of thought At-st's moved slower than these. Its actually more realistic to have there speeds reversed, with the at-st moving at 37 mph and the at-pt at 55 mph.

    Eh, my personal opinion that is no doubt going to cause a flame war, walkers suck, Tracked and Wheeled vehicles rule for so many reasons. I think id much rather have conventional tank, because it works and is not some stupidly over complicated nonsense like a walker which often exists solely to sci Fi up a setting, not because of any practicality. The AT-PT is just even dumber than the normal dumb. I dont even know how the thing doesn't just tip over forward because it doesnt even look like the legs are under the things center of gravity.

  • @darkangel7542
    @darkangel7542 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    There are two big things that could really save the at-pt if they were not mentioned in the source books. Cost of production and ease of production.
    If these vehicles were easy enough to produce with any basic machine shop available to a basic imperial garrison then that would allow this a greater amount of value in an intergalactic setting. It is all terrain, making it so that any garrison force or scouting force has not only acces to this but the ability to produce it independently would be insane.
    Cost. If this thing could be made using easily available resources and nothing too high tech that would also allow this a little bit of forgiveness. Who cares if they cant turn well or have only one field of fire when you can build 3-5 of them faster, easier, and for the same price as an at-st.

  • @knobgobler2639

    Why would a high profile be so valuable? typically you want a lower profile for combat vehicles. Sure being tall can give some advantages but it mostly makes you a glaring target for literally every weapons system.
