    This is the video that sent me down the narrowboat rabbit hole on TH-cam... and I can't thank this channel enough for that!

    We ordered a boat off Andrew at Brayzel, at that boat show we are now living on a beautifully crafted boat. Thank you all at Brayzel.

    I'm on the other side of the pond in the United States and I really enjoy seeing the wide beem boats. It would be nice 2 see some of the boats here in the States. Maybe I'll make it over there sometime.

    Towards the end there was a map showing the canal network that wide beams can pass through. Where to get this map? It would help in choosing between wide and narrow beam. I like the wide beams - if I can get where I want to go.

    How limited in access to canals are widebeam boats? Are they capable of coastal cruising or only river and wide canals? Thanks, Alex

    for boats so big I think the designers have actually wasted a lot of the space inside.

    How much would the 12 foot width limit travel potential? I would think considerably

      Hoggarth The Wise Smeagol From what I’ve seen there are plenty of canals in the north and in the south you just cannot travel between the two you have to have the boat removed from the water hauled either north or south and drop back in. With a narrow boat you can travel from North to South without ever leaving the water

    just out of curiosity what dimensions should it not exceed in order to travel all canals? length width?

    • @yta6765
      @yta6765 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      This will help you see the details, but even so is not a complete listing. The narrowest choke point I have found listed is 6'9".

      @@yta6765 56 ft length is the approximate maximum boat length if your goal is to travel all canals - due to shorter locks

    • @yta6765
      @yta6765 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@p52457 Indeed. Actually I would like to find out just how extension and connected the network is that is accessible to wide beams. So many maps seem to forget to mention a narrow lock here or there.

      @@yta6765 Due to the virus, I'm a very bored Texan watching a million videos on subjects I know nothing about. Wide beams are separated by North and South routes and there is no way via water to connect the two. English countryside is beautiful. I wonder if the canals smell bad because the water isn't very "lovely" is it?

    • @yta6765
      @yta6765 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@p52457 Well, I'm a Brit but living in Asia these days - we've had 6 weeks of Covid induced lockdown so far and a few more to go. The results are a country with less than 100 deaths so far, so it is working.
      In general the canals in UK do not smell as they tend to have just enough water movement to prevent them being stagnant and a balanced aquatic ecosystem. There are strict rules about what can end up in the canals. Nowadays they are quite well looked after too so even in urban areas there are efforts to protect the water quality - more so than when they were primarily commercial thoroughfares. That is not to say there are not issues. I have seen videos made by a number of groups who go to the canals in urban areas and "fish" using magnets and grappling hooks to find metal and other stuff that has been dumped in the canals. They drag it all out and sell for scrap. They seem to "catch" plenty of bicycles, motorbikes and supermarket trolleys but anything goes and in one clip I saw it took 6 people to drag a heavy safe out (door already open). On some narrowboat vlogs you do hear them talking about sometimes hitting stuff hidden underwater - or even hitting something while talking about something completely unrelated. A lot of the canals are not very deep so a single shopping trolley can mean boats rubbing as they pass and I expect propellers can be damaged.

    its great but i would rather not have a black tank , sawdust loo and a composting bin on the back with saw dust , urine diverter and hemp waste bags then dispose of the bag once a week twice if two people , frees up much more room for clean water and no nasty cleaning out the black tank , it does not smell having this version of a loo, i would also have a water collection a huge battery bank and a drop down water turbine to collect energy while you move or while on a river , as well as the engine topping the batteries too , so basically you can run underfloor heating , in summer cooling , big freezer , washing machine , all that you will ever need to be comfortable , for sure i would need a bigger boat though i need at least 2 bedrooms , grand kids , for sure i will have a pantry / wood store too , in winter having an aga will mean water heating and help the electrical heat so you are not draining all the power to stay warm , heat water and cook , in winter i would try to stay on rivers so the batteries have good power

    These people know nothing about boats. All they do is compare room dimensions to their house and talk about internal fixtures and fittings
