Creating My Bog Style, Mixed Forest Planting, The Bonsai Zone, April 2021

  • เผยแพร่เมื่อ 22 เม.ย. 2021
  • I complete my first mixed species bonsai forest or penjing! The trees used are native black Spruce and Larch trees. I'm creating a northern bog style planting that should highlight the Larch trees in their fall colours.
The trees used are Picea mariana and Larix laricina.

It came together so well as you added the patches of wild chamomile, "bog" material and moss. Beautiful. The ground level close-ups of the sun dappled forest were inviting. A peaceful, meditative landscape to enjoy and visit over the seasons. Thank you.

You know, I apologize for not stopping by more often. But when I do, you’re like the perfect neighbor. You don’t care when I need to work , sleep and hide, but you’re always there when I actually feel like being social. And every time I stop by, you’re just doing some of the coolest stuff ! Thanks, man. It’s good to “ get away “ for a bit ! 👍 I aware time is worth more to me at my age now than money. Your videos are always time well spent . Be well !!!
Ps. You nailed my memory of camping every year in New Jersey !!! Bravo !!

I really love this scene you built and bogs in general. You make it seem very natural and miniaturized. I know landscapes like these from holidays spent in Sweden so the scene you made also reminded me of that. Thanks for sharing, greetings from Germany :)

That looks fantastic! The bogs here are muskeg mostly, we call it Loon shit. Stinky black slimy gunk. We have to build special roads over them with corduroy matting under, if you leave the road you will sink into oblivion. Machines have been lost. The trees that grow in them are small, thin and straight as arrows. Many bog lands do not have the Canadian shield showing through, they are just flat. Some places the shield shows through, it's beautiful, but there are different trees and styles there... Many bogs here have cedar mixed in as well, and birch. The moss grows right through, it's really thick peat moss. Even where you think no sun shines, there is still moss there. Some trees have a circle of shed needles under them. The shed needles can be an inch deep. That is what stops growth under the tree. Not so much in bogs though... The moss in some bogs will grow in little mounds, caused by frost heaves and water filling and draining. These areas, you will find pitcher plants in the moss mounds. :)

  • @invertevision4757

I'm not that far into the video but personally, I like to have small trees up front with the bigger trees, like a true forest. I understand you do it like you do for the aspect of a forced perspective, but that's kinda an antiquated approach now. Having small trees up front with the big trees as well as in the back gives it a generational approach as well as more interest and ability to do more with each planting other than "having" to have all the small trees in the back. I love your Avatar Grove especially for that reason of having smaller trees up front. Just my 2 cents, and as I have said before, we may not do a lot the same but keep doing what works for you haha. I still love your videos. You so remind me of someone I'd love to meet and even hang out with I guess you could say. I'm only 32 but I have always preferred the company of older people to people my own age. Not sure why but yea, back to the video.
Oh and the idea of using those dead spruce is fantastic! I love how different it is from your "normal" plantings. I hate that I can only grow Jap larch where I am (only species that can take the heat/humidity here in west TN and even then have to change the way we can prune them). I'd love to have way way more in my growing bonsai collection. Just 1 Jap larch isn't enough, especially when a larch is what brought me to do bonsai so many years ago in a book a seen. ...I always seem to ramble like I'm talking to a well known friend, haha, Cheers Nigel! Back to the video for real this time...

Hi Nigel! Wow, so far this planting is looking very good. I am so looking forward to watch this growing up and in. You know, I was thinking that some black sand around the bog plants would look excellent, I always think of darker ground in bogs. I know you can get small bags of different colored sand at fish stores.
Did I talk to you about 'hypertufa'? It's cement based, but includes perlite or vermiculite in the mix. This creates a much lighter weight finished product which is still sturdy. I'm thinking you could make your own smooth 'granite' rock in whatever size you want. Perlite is what I use to make my pots, but vermiculite should give it a darker, more rocklike appearance. If you put some folds in tinfoil or saranwrap like plastic, you could even get the ice scraped look to your rock. It's worth thinking about, especially since you already have all the ingredients except the vermiculite, if you choose to use it.
BTW, I went looking for the ingredient you mix with perlite to create your soil mix. What are several names for it? I can't spell 'Terfus', so the clerk couldn't help me with it. HELP, please!!
Love your channel, Nigel. Thanks for sharing all you do.

That’s one gorgeous forest Nigel! I’m desperately eager to create one but I’ve been unable to find the large landscape pots you have. Could you please let me know where you purchased the pot? I tried superfly bonsai but they are having trouble getting mica pots this year. Any help you can provide will be greatly appreciated. Also, where do find all your saplings. I’ve spent hours on the internet to try and find nurseries that sell young saplings like that but all I got were puny little plants that barely survived our harsh Ottawa winter, as well as been nibbled by mice and voles. Thank you so much for any help you can provide. The timing of my interest in bonsai really sucks, right in the middle of a pandemic! I can’t wait to see the progress of this forest. Honestly, you are the king of forest creation!

You can make a forest out of what is left. Then the black spruce can perferably be larger. Then you have one you have to trim and one not so much and trees are much bigger. I think you have many forest bonsai that are of the same height. Please make one where the trees can be much larger, over 50cm-70cm. please....
