  • Inflation is at a near 10-year high in January this year, and it’s hitting our food prices hard. So it’s more important than ever that we stretch our dollar when it comes to our food. That’s the challenge that host Steven Chia issued to two families for a week - to either save money on their meals, or figure out ways to get more food for the same amount of money. How much can they achieve in a week? And can they do it without compromising on their current lifestyles?

A lot of ppl can definitely relate to these. Since 2020 we have tried to keep a small stockpile of non-perishable foods we regularly eat, which with rising prices have already saved us some money.
We also rarely eat out, but it's more for health instead of cost concerns.
Storage is very important for any pantry, maybe especially for perishables, so we don't wash fruits and veg and wrap/place newspapers to absorb excess moisture.
I'm also not too picky with organic vs. traditionally farmed produce, but try to keep in mind the dirty dozen that is better bought as organically grown.
Last is I try to buy in season(cheaper) and preserve in batches(i.e., kimchi, kraut, etc.), they're staples that I can pull out from the fridge for a quick meal for weeks.

in the first place, i noticed a lot of Singaporean are not cooking their own meals and bringing their own home cooked food to work and buying from outside instead
even the HUMBLE water... instead of buying Bottles of water, installing a water purifier at home and bottle your water at home and drink only water, will cut down money spent on sugar drinks.
if you need some "flavor" infusing the water with a fruit tea bag, can give it some flavor like lemon tea or blackcurrant tea bag..in water etc..
actually for "organic" veg, there are some veg that dun really need to be organic as they are less exposed to pesticides, like so like oranges with their thicker skin, usually veg with roots tend to benefit from going organic as they are in contact with the pestides most and absorb them more..

We reduced costs by buying milk for coffee which consumes less than using for cereals. Sometimes using milk for baking, and alternative is using oats milk, we found one that tastes good and stayed with this brand. It costs lesser than milk from cows. I do disagree with one tip when it was mentioned about grocery store sales having good prices. It's not always true. Always check the usual price and sale price to the gram or ounce or millilitre and other products like it.
Example: $2.50 for 100g on sale $2.90 24 count but the gram is 85g, sometimes the marketing changes the package or the digital price tag

End of day expenditure is money spent on food and not how much you spend per meal. I think Steven spent over SGD100 that day to prepare the luxury meal. If he can use the same ingredient over the week then yes he drives the cost down but the per meal calculation which was done wouldn’t be really accurate.

Hey smart alec, how about just eat 1 meal a year, eat less right? I'm sure we'll all be able to save generously. Ah heck, why not make it 1 meal in a decade. Can save even more.

I give you $10SGD, please replicate the pasta dish for me. How do I just buy 1 sprig of thyme or 1 tablespoon of oil? Not practical and the calculation just do not make sense at all.

Investing in crypto is very volatile and risky which is why most successful investors trade with professional brokers

The real risk in the Crypto market is the risk of not investing, not the risk of short term price volatility.
