My wife used to buy fresh chicken from NTUC and freeze it in freezer. Unfreeze it when needed. So, frozen chicken won’t affect our family.

The fresh chicken is bigger and quickly frozen and probably not stored for long before you eat it. The frozen chicken you buy from NTUC really taste and looks poorer in quality. It looks as big when you buy it but after roasting, it shrinks by 50% and a lot of water leak out from it.

For the time being, as long as the ban stay, we should accept any alternative as long as it is chicken rice and when we have cravings for it . It is for the exporter to resolve the issues before we are getting used to the taste . The more there is a demand, the more challenging we are going to get . Batam is a great place to explore . By then , the ball is on the exporters to quickly resolve the shortages . We should promote that frozen chicken is as good until the ban is lifted .

When companies freeze the chicken its not a regular freezer..its a blast freezer that freezes the meat fast not like our regular fridge or upright freezer. Bacterial growth is more when fresh chicken freeze in the home fridge then thaw then cook. Better buy the frozen and store in your freezer. Maybe you have to choose which variety of chicken and quality of the supplier.

Frozen chicken drastically shrinks after cooking. Some are pumped with lots of water in order to bulk up their weight for when it is sold. Besides, it doesn't make economic sense to obtain food from so far away. There will be even more supply chain issues with countries supplying from the other side of the world.

    • @brandenburg2388

The extreme cold temperatures make the cell membranes more fragile due to ice crystal formation inside the cells. And since the humidity in cold storage is quite low, this has a dehydrating effect on the meat. So when the meat is thawed, the cells will easily rupture and as the ice melts, it turns to water that seeps out of the cells. That's why the meat looks dry and shrunken after cooking.

The problem is not the chicken but the chicken feed. The price of the feed had gone up substantially but we can still buy fresh chicken from the wet market here in M’sia albeit at a much higher price. For places like the supermarkets that is selling at the ceiling price set here in Malaysia of course there is a shortage! If the farmers sell it to them they will be facing heavy losses. So govt is actually forcing them to sell at a loss by banning the export.

Hence, gomen banned the export of chicken to 'stabilise' the price. Anyways.... don't know should I label it fun or stupid fact, the chicken price increased anyways. Perhaps its just the cartel's plot to force a price increase for better profit. Just like durians, 2 months ago... they claimed due to the weather and shortage of manpower, the yield would be much lower and expect a price increase of 30-60%. 1 month later.... OH... We wont die without fresh chicken, and we should not be held ransom for it. But i think we should accept the facts, and stop trying to convince ppl frozen chicken can taste as good or better as fresh chicken.
1 thing we fail to mention, how much or is there any price different of the frozen / chilled chicken ( eg :drumstick ) compare to fresh chicken last time?
What are or are there any cost/time increase in processing of frozen chicken to make it taste as close to fresh chicken.
