2017: Original from the 1970s! A Full Store Tour of JCPenney at Millcreek Mall in Erie, PA

  • Yes you read the title right! I've found a Penney's store that is in near mint condition from 1975 (with the exceptions of a few minor renovations); and yes... It is indeed original to the mall and is the only original anchor tenant left in the mall since the closure of Sears! Also I highlight the all new appliance department as well as a couple of secrets that most people don't even know about this store (including one or two that I actually discovered while recording this video)! Watch the video to see what I am talking about. HINT: It has something to do with food...
    Full video of the elevator in J.C.Penney to be uploaded soon.

    Thanks for posting this video. My first job was at JCPenney's in Walnut Mall in Petersburg, VA circa 1975 - 1978 . I wish I would have recorded or even taken pictures of the store
    before it was torn down in 1990. Your video brought back a lot of memories from the past. I will never forget the large Muzak Machine located in the upstairs offices that played that
    constant background music we all shopped to in the 60's, 70's and 80's. Back in the 70's Penney's sold just about every thing; carpet, furniture, electronics, sporting goods, hardware and paint, music records and cassettes, and even camera and photo processing along with a snack bar in the back that sold hot sandwiches for lunch. Much different than today's store.

      I wonder if that old kitchen I highlighted in this video was where that "snack bar" was at, like similar to the one at the long gone Walnut Mall. If not; maybe that area near the now closed off furniture department.
      Did they have like maybe "two" cafes or restaurants in this Penney's originally (like one was only a snack bar and the other was the full-blown sit down restaurant)? Or did they take the food and stuff from that old kitchen on the first level upstairs to that area I said looked like maybe an old restaurant dining room.

      @@NathanDavisVideos The Penny's at Walnut Mall had the "lunch counter" as it was called back then, located in the very back of the store on the first floor. It was adjacent to the Catalog Department. There were no other food services offered in the balance of the store. The employee break room was located on the second floor behind the Layaway center but had no cooking facilities.

    Do you remember the fountain in front of JCPenney? Or the pits. Well what I called them. Stairs in the ground leading to a lounge with payphones and stuff.

      I remember the fountain that used to be in front of JCPenney! It was there for the longest time and was the last fountain that was in the mall. I'm not sure about the pits and stairs that lead down to lounges or whatever you call it; sunken seating areas?

    Holy crap this video has gotten nearly 3K views?! WHAT?!?!?! It also appears to be my 8th most popular video on my channel as well! Wow I never thought people would be so interested in this exact JCPenney store. I do got to admit; it is one of my most favorite JCPenney ever! Hell it was early-childhood JCPenney as well!

    You gotta come to NY some time! There are old wooden escalators in Macy's in NYC, and there's some really old escalators at the tri county fleamarket in levittown, NY. I just recently filmed the escalators in there. They used to have some really old elevators in there too, but they took them out and replaced them with new ones. I was so mad when they did that! I'll give you some links ot my videos that have them.

      At one point it was the forth largest mall in the US; probably about around the time it first opened back in 1975.

    I used to work in that store in the late 80s and early 90s. There was never a restaurant in the store. Dude you need some serious help in camera operation if your going to keep doing this.

      It was a great job then. I made a lot of life long friends. Even though it was a long time ago and I live in another state I keep in contact with them through facebook. We were all like a family back then. As far as the work goes I would say it depends on what you are doing. I worked in every department in the store except womens. Back when I started there was a sporting goods dept.that I worked in as well. Customer service can be challenging and rewarding. Good fortune to you.

      Are you sure? Looks like it did to me it might of been way before you were working there and just don't remember it.

    • @NathanDavisVideos
      @NathanDavisVideos  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah I think it [the cafe or restaurant] might have closed a little bit before you started working there Scott. TBH; I'm not quite sure, but it does show "some" possible evidence that there "may have been" a cafe or restaurant in that Penney's at one point.
      The only other one I can confirm being in a department store up there was the Tic-Toc Cafe in Kaufmann's (now Macy's) up on the second floor where the public restrooms are, or by them.

  • @PearComputingDevices

    Yeah unfortunately most of these stores kinda all sell the same thing. Mostly cloths. Not much to attract customers and thats part of the downfall.

    • @NathanDavisVideos
      @NathanDavisVideos  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah unfortunately that seems to be the case (which by the way online shopping isn't really the main reason why [even though Amazon is trying there best to eliminate stores like literally murdering them, and they kind of are getting with it] many brick-n'-mortar stores, malls, shopping center, or any other form of retail alike; but it more to do with people being too damn lazy to do anything except stay at home all day -- probably watching porno or god knows what else; or just don't have enough time to do shopping at a store).

    • @NathanDavisVideos
      @NathanDavisVideos  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      However when I was visiting the Penney's at Southern Park Mall; I've noticed not only they are bringing back full-blown appliances -- but; they also appear to be bringing back electronics (i.e. TV, stereos, etc.) as well! I guess my prediction of J.C. Penney bringing back the electronics department was right.
