    In USSR you had these very commonly, and there was also the bigger version at 1750 or even 2000 or 3000w. They were 30 cm long and you used those to heat tubs of water at a time. My grandma when she was young in 1950s she didn't have hot water heater in her house so before bath time she would fill the tub and immerse one or two of these huge heaters for 10 minutes and water would be nice and toasty.. God old times.. well, not so good.

    A few days (maybe a week ago) I had this high current transformer I made and I used a bit of steel wire (maybe 1-1.5mm?) to make a heating element to light some pieces of wood on fire. A butane lighter wouldn't keep them alight, but the heating element worked so well.

    Power does not have to be exaggerated. Resistance might drop with temperature depending on alloy or heating element. Ideally you would need to measure resistance at heating element operating temperature, which can be due to insulation well above 100°C.

    • @Xackus
      @Xackus 6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      He did measure current at the end and it was only slightly different.

    • @DiodeGoneWild
      @DiodeGoneWild  6 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      The power of heating elements generally doesn't go up as they heat up. Most metals increase their resistance when hot, so the power goes down a bit.

    • @DiodeGoneWild
      @DiodeGoneWild  6 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      The measured current was slightly higher than the calculated one, because the nominal voltage of the heater is 220V, but EU has 230V nominal and sometimes 240V actual voltage.

    • @9712teo
      @9712teo 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@DiodeGoneWild Maybe they give you 800W due to the resistor tolerance and the maximum nominal voltage (250V) (considering the worst case possible). If you do the maths the resistance is a little bit less than 80 ohms (the current is 3.2A); this is the case if they're using a 100 ohms resistor (nominal value) with a tolerance +/- 20% and that is a possible explanation, considering that they try everything to sell making ridiculous prices.

    • @Agent24Electronics
      @Agent24Electronics 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      They probably got that 800 Watts figure by using the peak mains voltage instead of RMS.

    Cool. So is that little "6" almost "B" symbol always the cyrillic character for voltage?
    I wonder if this little guy would be an ideal element for a small reflow oven. It could probably work as a preheating device for crude SMD reworks too. The plastic and wire would obviously need to go.

    • @JaMoBo265
      @JaMoBo265 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      В in cyrillic is equal to V in latin, so i actually just means Volts :) The latin B in cyrillic looks like this Б or this б (upper vs. lowercase)

      B stands for volts in cyrillic. The B symbol is actually pronounced "V" in russian.
      I think this element is going to fail quite soon. It's very poor quality and it's not designed to run in free air. I also forgot to say that after the experiment, the tube has mains in it! You probably should use something of a higher quality and also designed for free air operation.

There isn't such things as a standard in all reality, they may call it 110 or 120, but it's all over the place. We have the same receptacles for 110~120v normal utilities as that water heater.

      If you have a water heater that draws 2,27A from ~120 volts it needs 272W. If you plugged this heater into 240 volts, it would draw 1,09kW; so 4 times the nominal power, because the voltage and the current are double, so quadruple power

    That heating element with a metal case, doesn't have a ground wire, wtf?

    • @jerryspann8713
      @jerryspann8713 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Theres a thin heating wire that runs through the middle, then there is fine sand that us packed around it between the heater coil and the steel tubing.

    • @wolflicious8912
      @wolflicious8912 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@jerryspann8713 I know that, it's filled with magnesium oxide which spreads the heat onto the metal case by the heating element (coil inside), but sometimes the resistive wire can get in contact with the case.
