    When it comes to seized pins, I used to centre punch and then drill out a large hole in the pin but not drill all the way through, then heat up with welding torch then install drift and knock out. Lots of swear words in development, after that no problem worked every time.

    "Muff Couplings" - the bane of my life 35 years ago. I have much empathy but only a little sympathy since it's warm, dry & you have a workshop to do it in. Try it in a -20C West Germany, freezing cold, soaking wet, covered in much & in the go for 36 hours with 20-minute nap-breaks to give you the illusion of sleep 😂
    Clever idea to check the final drive ratios & that's a relief I'm sure. SO glad that wasn't the cause of an even greater crisis but also loving the optimism as always. Hadn't realised how spares for the 43 range might now be an issue due to selling them to Ukraine but can understand that as well, having worked out there several times.
    Great video as always & Ted's expert supervision is a lesson in calmness in extreme times. Thanks Ted 🐕

Soldier on lads you're almost there.

  • @timchazer3113
    @timchazer3113 ปีที่แล้ว +7

    Looking at when you opened up the steering box top cover, from memory, and I haven't had to do steering box adjustment on these in over 20 years, but the suspension stud is missing from the back. at about 10:48 on the video both those plates should have studs with a t piece and 2 nuts. this adjusts the heit of the band so it isn't rubbing whilst you drive

    in my rapidly advancing years i have always discovered doing an excellent job of painting military vehicles on the outside does not cover the plethora of gigantean cock ups hidden within - if you paint the interior first for some mad reason the cock ups will present themselves on the outside and therefore be slightly, but only slightly easier to get at
    saying that, why do the simplest jobs have to be hidden behind so much stuff that needs removing just to get at it - i often wonder if those design nutters are now working for car manufacturers such as Audi - to change a headlight bulb can cost huge amounts because you need to remove the whole bumper and it costs a fortune, the logic is so military in its thinking
    loving the banter as ever, it restores something deep with in - or i need a pee, something else i can't reach with a metric adjustable spanner

    Seeing your dilemma about the final drive and shaft reminds me of my British sister unit friends (Ubique artillery stationed in Dortmund 1983) telling me that one of the 4 Abbotts they had in their battery, had the gunner's sight on the opposite side of the piece than the remaining 3 guns. No surprise with that design. I was US Army FA in Giessen on the M110A2 8 inch Howitzers.

    So you have learned what I learned as new REME in seventies just on first posting. 1) Any electrical problem under a sloping 432 faceplate is for the new ECE. 2) Every pack with disintegrating electrical connections is yours to repair 3) Every floor plate has to be removed and the area underneath cleaned which requires scraping, hosing and painting. Now you stand a sporting chance of rectifying problems in field. It was a shock to see the level of crap under the floor- full!

    I’ll add what I do know about the M-113 I spent a lot of time driving when I was your age. The right side track has one or two shoes less than the left side to allow for the convex of the road surface so the driver isn’t constantly trying to pull the vehicle to the left because of the road angle. I was told it’s also to allow the vehicle to want to steer slightly right if the driver goes down for some reason so it won’t hit oncoming traffic head on. So I wonder if the final drive mod you found was for something similar. I apologize if my description was too sloppy, it’s the best I can do.

    Blonde lass ( not being rude, don't know her name ) winding that brake box thing round while Jack is eating an ice lolly is a classic moment. I'm not sure if he forfeits his man card for that or if he deserves to be awarded an extra one...

    One good thing about working on tanks there are very few delicate mechanical parts. So you can hit them with a hammer.😊

    You need to have all Jacks audio in time-lapse. He sounds more manly with the squeaky voice.
