    So glad I found your video, no one in Houston wanted to fix my $350 patio umbrella, but a nice neighbor who repairs everything is going to do it following your instructions.
    Thank You so much.

    Thank you Donald. We used your idea on a large patio umbrella that cost over a $500.00. We used a piece of shelve wall stand bracket instead of cooper tubing. The shelving bracket was three sided but it worked!!! Thank you for saving us from a $500.00 loss. The self bracket was bought at a Lowes.

    This is 5 1/2 years after your post, but THANK YOU! My umbrella had a broken rib from wind toppling the umbrella and the table it was in. I was about to buy a new umbrella but it's hard to find one that gets really good reviews and few negatives. I had some pipe in my basement (I think it's aluminum left over from some buried outside electric conduit), and I followed your idea. I don't have a riveter so, instead of rivets, I drilled two holes through the pipe and rib pieces and inserted screws/nuts. Your idea worked like a charm!

    I know it's MANY years late, but thank you×3 for this video. 5/8" copper is nigh impossible to find in stores so I purchased a 12" length piece on Amazon. It was the perfect length because I had two broken ribs. I did everything you did, except instead of rivets I used zip ties. Just being cheap 😂. Thanx again!

    Great idea Don. Another way to fix (if not broke at the hinging area) is to cut a piece of curtain rod and slide up past the bent area to half point of the rod. Just fixed mine. The curtain rod slid on tightly but worked perfectly.

    Thank you for this. We had 2 nice umbrellas that were damaged in a severe storm and I am NOT a handy man but you're directions worked perfectly! The only thing I did differently was instead of using rivets on the ends of the copper pipe, I found some duct tape that was similar in color to the umbrella rib. So far so good. Thank you so much!!!

    These Hampton Bay umbrellas are built so cheaply. Those aluminum ribs are like 1mm thick and always tear at the rivets. Great idea on the fix. But I could not find 5/8"diameter copper pipe anywhere though. Only 1/2 or 3/4. Orchard sold 1 foot segments of 3/4" dia, so I bought 2 to repair the two broken ribs. I hammered it a bit to flatten for a snug fit. Also I don't have a rivet tool and wouldn't know how to use it if I did, so I just drilled holes and used 1/4" dia machine bolts with hex nuts to make all connections. It did the job and is working great! Beats shelling out another $100 or more for a new one. Thanks again for the tip!

    Great video. Thank you very much. When I got started messing with it I decided to replace the whole rib I used a piece of half inch electric conduit at Lowe's they sell a five foot piece for like $3... you mash one end into the oval shape and attach it to the top hinge just like the others... then use the original the strut and a stainless bolt and washers. Works ike a charm and is really really strong. I you want you can paint it black to match the others. Anyway thank you so much for the inspiration! I was headed for the dumpster when I saw your video and it inspired me to try something so thank you so much!

    Whoo Hooo! It works again! Thanks for this video! The 5/8" copper we had was too narrow for our rib. We used 3/4" inside diameter heavy copper pipe scrap. The 3/4" copper was a little wide when oval shaped so we added small home made shims with glue inside the oval copper on both sides at the top and at the bottom. We spray painted the repair. It is very solid now and blends in. We had the scrap so it was free. Thanks Donald!

    Donald - Great, solid, and quick fix - thanks! To share, ½" copper pipe fit my cheaper ribs; I used lock nuts and when assembled, spray-painted the repair black. $2 for the 6" pipe, 40c for the bolt-nut, and pennies for 2 rivets. Beats the typical American reaction of, "Oh my - it's broken - let's just buy a new one." :)

    I was just about to give up on my beautiful and expensive umbrella with a broken rib. I replaced it with a cheap ugly one but didn't have the heart to pitch it. It has been 2 years! Thanks for the video. A pop-up storm took our umbrella for a ride an broke an arm. Barley a year old, didn't want to throw it away, a couple of Google searches for parts and then this video. For the price of an arm that might fix it, I can get enough parts to fix all the arms ... deal.

    My previous comment came after viewing the video. Now I've finally undertaken the project and remain extremely grateful. A couple questions though. Is heavy duty copper pipe the best material? That's all Lowe's had (but they did have it in a six inch piece). Although I used a drill bit that was listed for metal, it was hard to drill, and the bit snapped, but during one of the ends after I had drilled the middle hole. Fortunately the pipe fit so snugly on the arms of the umbrella, no additional fasteners were needed. Getting an even shape when flattening the pipe was challenging, but I manage to wiggle the pieces together. The main event though is that my umbrella is proudly and happily open on my patio (but I will never again leave it unattended). Thanks again Donald. You are a shining example of what makes the Internet and You Tube great.

    I just followed this advice. I did have issues shaping and sliding my pipe over the ribs. Eventually, I shaped My broken rods inward and used WD-40 to assist with driving them in. My pipe isn't exactly center on the joint, but I placed my hole in the correct location. It works.

    Thank you for this video. I found that using a 3/4 Polyethylene SIDR tube (Excel Polytech) available at my hardware store was a snug fit also and easier to get around the ribs than 5/8 or 3/4 copper. My ribs were slightly thicker as they had solar lights that also needed to be fed through and repaired. But it worked great using this basic method.

      Thanks for this tip! Our large, expensive patio umbrella was picked up by the wind 2 days ago right in front of us, smshed into the house and broke a metal rib. My umbrella's ribs are also a tad larger than shown in this video.

    • @MattPilz
      @MattPilz 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@kathiemcclure1772 Good luck! I tried a lot of different methods including bond/JB-Weld etc (that didn't work at all) and coppers. The PVC/Plastic style I mentioned was the best and cheapest. The kind I got is fairly rigid like PVC but still formable, it was called "3/4"X5' FLEX WATER PIPE NSF 100PSI BLUE
      " on the receipt it was $2 for 5 feet and I cut it with simple pipe cutter (or hacksaw or jigsaw would work too). Copper is very expensive and for the 5/8 copper you would usually have to buy it in 10+ feet rolls for refrigeration uses which can be $20 itself.

    • @kathiemcclure1772
      @kathiemcclure1772 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Matt Pilz Thanks for the tip. Lowe’s did have the 6" copper piece but hammering it to shape it was nearly impossible so we had decided to go back and get PVC. However, with your timely reply, we'll look for the flex water pipe! Thanks so much!

    Great idea, just a thought for others with LED lights and want a somewhat smoother finish, I have similar damage, but will try an internal plug, cut to size to fit inside the tubes, extending 4 or 5 inches in both directions, probably out of composite material with a screw on either side. A dab of liquid nails inside the tubes for good measure. Yours is a god fix, I'll try mine and post if it works out, thx Donald........

    Thanks for this great idea. I didn't have an appropriate size piece of copper, I would've needed at least 3/4" i.d. because I was repairing an 11' umbrella, and the ribs are a bit thinker. I was however able to make the repair using a piece of simple electrical conduit. I made my piece about 12" long, again because of the 11' diameter umbrella. I just finished it, put the cover on and opened it and it works as good as new! Thanks again.

    To all who can't find 5/8" copper pipe! I am a refrigeration technician and work with 5/8" copper ACR pipe. It is 5/8' ID. Figure out the cost of $1.50, and a 1 lb.shipping and handling fee. Use small padded envelope to California 92882 and that's how much the piece will cost you. I will ship to you right away. Had a bend/break on the rectangular shaped metal rib of a lighted umbrella. It uses 3 small lights powered by a solar cell finial on each rib. A rib bent at the position of the first light from the top, making the remaining two unworkable, unfortunately. I used a left-over piece of standard from wall shelving, cut two pieces at about 7"each, jammed them onto the rib from the top and bottom, and drilled 3 7/64" holes, at each end and the middle. Used 3 #8 machine screws, 1 1/4" long, put #10 flat washers at the head of the screw, inserted them into the holes, put a flat washer at the base of the screw, screwed on the nut for each and tightened. I think it may be stronger than the original! Be SURE to put the rounded screw head against the cloth, not the screw ends.

    For quick fix, I use use foot thin stick or a thin metal rod (at least 3 feet in length) as a splint by duck taping the stick or rod along the spoke. Make sure to place the screw between the two broken pieces before you tape the entire length of the stick to the spoke. And double or triple layer the duck tape because it gets dry and brittle real fast under the host sun.

    I have a couple of the umbrella repair parts. if interested email me at dp3102@sbcglobal.net and for $3.50 plus shipping and handling you too can repair your umbrella rib. When you retire your old umbrella take the repair kit off and save it for your next repair. Completely reusable.
