  • Great news!!!
A new elephant has arrived at ZOO Antwerp. The animal is named Max and was transported in a truck from a zoo in the Czech capital, Prague. Max replaces the elephant Assam, who recently left for the zoo in Augsburg, Germany.
After a long journey from Prague, Max the elephant was allowed to explore his new home in the Antwerp zoo for the first time. He is an adolescent animal who will find a good playmate in the other adolescent male, Sam.
This is also the role the zoo plays in a breeding program: preparing adolescent elephants to later fulfil their role as breeding bulls in a female group. In this context, ZOO Antwerp has been assigned Max.
The new elephant will be assisted in the coming days by his caretaker from Prague, who came along for the move. They are giving Max some time to adjust. It is, after all, a new environment. The very skilled experts at ZOO Antwerp are following his rhythm, so as soon as the weather is nice enough and Max indicates he is ready, he can, of course, go outside.
On July 19, it finally happened; visitors could admire Max all afternoon. The meeting between the two elephants also seemed to go quite smoothly. After a bit of pushing and shoving for dominance, they decided they were evenly matched. An hour later, they were already standing peacefully next to each other, as if it had always been that way.
The Tom & Melissa channel was lucky enough to be there at just the right time to film it all.
    Please enjoy the video.

Are they going to participate in Pleistocene Parks plan of reintroducing mammoths to the Arctic tundra? Ithoyght African elephants would do better as they are acclimated to a varying climate.

Hello. The international breeding program that we mention in this video has nothing to do with the Pleistocene Park and the reintroduction of mammoths. It is a program to keep a healthy population of this species of Asian elephants. ZOO Antwerpen is a place where they keep adolescent bulls until they are old enough to mate. Once they reach maturity, they are taken away to become a breeding bull. This could be to ZOO Planckendael, where they have a group of females or any other ZOO that requires a bull. This program is coordinated internationally to keep the genetic diversity intact.
