I would like to add, that most of TH-camrs test it on fast paced, GPU heavy games (like cyberpunk here). Reasons are obvious and theres nothing wrong with that.
But this tech does really wonders in CPU heavy, slow paced games that do not have any interpolation tech built in or the ones locked at 60fps - strategy, slow RPG, city builders.
I really love it in Company of Heroes, first Cities Skylines, some smaller indie city builders. Games that will drop to below 60 once they have to compute thousands or millions of units. AFMF shines in those cases, as there is no fast movement to create visible artifacts and UI usually stays the same, so it's easy for algorithm to interpolate new frame. And the bonus fluidity makes my eyes to be not as tired as before.
For FPS? Yeah, it's not great. But for games where you cannot enforce more than 60fps or you know it will drop once gameplay will progress? It's no brainier.

I gave it a go on my 7900 XTX (+15%) with WoW and 5120x1440 G9 at 240hz. I found that I got the best result by frame capping inside WoW to 119 fps, and having AFMF2 double the framerate. It actually felt a lot smoother than using it uncapped, and reduced frame spiking dramatically, while also using less power. It's quite incredible actually!

I wish more people realized you can use multiple gpu’s in both LSFG and AFMF2 to offload the work of generating frames from the main gpu. (I’ve tested this with CPU’s that have integrated GPUs).
It will also work with 2 dedicated gpus’s. The one doing frame generation needs to be connected to the monitor displaying the game while the one rendering the whole game (the fastest gpu) can just sit there without any monitors hooked into it (or just the secondary monitors).

What i like about lossless scaling, is that it works for yt videos. You can interpolate frames of 30 fps videos to 60 or 60 fps to 120 if you have high refresh rate monitor and it looks legit better. Combine that with nvidia hdr and nvidia super scaling and you can basically watch high bitrate, high resolution, 120 fps, hdr videos on yt. Now it won't work with low end gpus, cus their tensor cores are too weak, but with something like rtx 3080 or rtx 4070 it just works. What a time to be alive.

Need to correct you here 7:07 LSFG works on DX9/10/11/12 and Vulkan and OpenGL. Wouldn't be surprised if it works on DX8 games or earlier too in windowed mode.
It works on this video even, it works on your media player, it works in HDR it's insane.

    • @KenTWOu
      @KenTWOu 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

Another correction is at 2:53, AFMF1 worked in OpenGL and Vulkan games in preview drivers, then they disabled it later, but you could still enable it adding "GFGEnableApi" registry key. And it also worked in DX9 and10 games through DXVK or dgVoodoo and other software like that. AFMF1 also worked in media players (I tested it) and is compatible with HDR.

  • @yissnakklives8866

AFMF1 really does help certain games, like 7 days to die, to lower the hotspot temps on rx6000 (and 5000) while allowing max settings. I was hitting thermal throttling at 95c at 1440p mostly high settings, but just leveraging AFMF1 and anti-lag, doubled the FPS (80 ==> 160-ish) and allows ultra quality at ~70c - lossless scaling did not help with 7Days :)

  • @Iceman-hb3uk
    @Iceman-hb3uk 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +5

I think AFMF2 is quite an improvement compared to AFMF, I have faith that it will be better in the final version (keep in mind this is preview drivers) but at the same time I'm pretty sure it won't be insanely good since it's still just software fg.
I'm currently using AFMF2 on a few games, FH5 is not bad, sometimes there are some minor artifacts but nothing you would really notice if not looking for it.
Euro Truck Simulator 2 and Microsoft Flight Sim 2020 are fanstastic with AFM2, on ETS2 I just lock FPS to 120 and let AFMF2 make me reach 165, on MFS2020 I can pull a little over 70 so I just lock to 60 FPS and enjoy the extra smoothness of fg.
The main issue is developers not implementing it in games, cause with proper vectorial data and UI info you would have way better image quality and no issues with UI as it wouldn't pass it on fg.

I have experience with AFMF 1, AFMF 2 and LSFG and the short answer is AFMF 1 is not that great, AFMF 2 better performance, LSFG better quality.
The long answer is that the last game I played was Senua's Saga Hellblade 2 and LSFG was not realizing that the game is running and always wanted to frame gen the desktop(same thing happened when I played Throne and Liberty). So I installed the preview driver and AFMF 2 is amazing. They reduced the latency by a lot and the game just feels really good to play. Way smoother than before and even better than LSFG. My eyes cant really slow down to 25% so I cant see the better image quality with LSFG, but I can see it on youtube. I can definitely recommend LSFG, but sometimes it does not work for me sadly, but when it does it is also amazing. I will just use AFMF 2 in almost every single game now, because it makes the game better or makes my graphics card consume way less power by reaching the max FPS (in The Riftbreaker from 350-400W to 160-250W with the same 160FPS).

I have a cool idea they should try. scalable and/or scaling FG.
That tearing looking artifacts look like instability on the FG part. There's just too much to do at once at the target performance point. If it could detect when it starts becoming unstable to also scale back how much frames it needs to generate on those scenes, it could potentially correct itself and look very close to native at high frames.
Whole point of FG isn't to double framerate, its to improve smoothness. when you have assets having to catch up to the scene, that can look worse than low frames. Also dancing assets really breaks immersion and makes precise actions or attacks really hard to do. Just a though

I really am suprised with AFMF2, watched another vid where the latency was measured with a device and looked like with it enable only increased input delay by 5-10ms.
I am totally ok with this tbh as I already use anti-lag or cap frames with chill to get a lower input delay in games (measured with present mon installed + "application latency" with CapframeX). Without anti-lag or chill sometimes application latency in games is double avg frametimes. So with Chill say at 80-118 fps (240hz monitor) + AFMF2 high (6-8ms frame gen lag, AMD Overlay) I can get double the frames while having less overall input delay than just booting the game and running stock settings.

AFMF2 runs like a dream compared to the first version. It's also super stable for alt-tabbing now, and I didn't have it crash once. You get the hitch as it turns on and off (unsurprising), but no other problems. According to Adrenalin, AFMF2 was only adding 4-5 ms latency while active, and really didn't push GPU usage, so it's really nice for situations where you're trying to lower power draw/heat.

I switched from an rtx 3070 to amd 7800xt honestly i do not regret it. Amd keeps getting better i have tried afmf2 and it is awesome! Playing assassins creed mirage was getting 220-240fps uncapped framerates with hyper rx. capping frame at 70fps max settings with hyper rx and fsr2 set to native not quality with 1080p upscaled to 1440p and i am getting 140fps does deffo feel smoother. Honestly image quality is like 1440p native i compared several screenshots. Only consuming between 120-150 watts of power! And i am getting 140fps with like native 1440p image quality. If i bump it up to native 1440p it consumes 160-180 watts of power. Cannot tell the difference in image quality between upscaled 1080p resolution and native 1440p. Afmf2 is a brilliant feature!

    Fsr 3 = 40 fps
    Fsr 3 + fg = 70 fps
    Fsr 3 + fg + afmf 2 = 140 fps

I have a humble 6500XT (enough for what I do) and I have also Lossless Scaling which I bought to try with my previous GPU (which is old AF, that's why I wanted more frames)... And while I don't do side by side comparisons like you do here, what I like about AFMF is the ease of use. I haven't been bothered by artifacts at least in the games I play - which did happen to me in NieR: Automata with LS, it artifacts A LOT there while running, on the legs and anything that's moving fast, and I don't mean details, I mean absolute deformation of 2B's legs, constantly, then again this could be because the old GPU wasn't that capable) - However, when you're "in the zone" and with a budget GPU, more frames usually do feel better and having to open third party software on top of capping either with RTSS or Radeon Chill is more work. I haven't really tried AFMF2 yet, but AFMF works well enough for me with a lot less fiddling than I have to do with LS. Alt+R, turn on, check if I like it. If I don't, Alt+R, turn off, keep playing. I did watch your LS video when I bought LS... If you want to just play and feel a smoother experience (I'm on an overclocked to 75hz old 1080p panel), AFMF is a lot faster to use and, so far, it hasn't disturbed me at all. I have yet to try LS on a crappy laptop I have to run older or less demanding indie games to see how it does.

I'm most curious tho about the fact that you can use a secondary gpu or apu dedicated to frame generation on AFMF 2.
If this feature was implemented into LSFG that would mitigate if not nullify the high cost of frame generation so for exemple when upgrading you keep your old gpu and use it or buy an old one with a discount to relieve load on the rendering GPU
For AMD seems like the main way forward is to include machine learning as well as AI like Nvidia to improve image quality on upscale and generation.

The game also doesn't even get interpolated so is an obvious 70fps.
My laptop doesnt have this issue but it on windows 11.
Also he is wrong in saying they do this the same way. They dont. Lsfg replaces whatever is on screen with a new window and dont work on full screen games. And will also cause problems with some anticheats if you're not careful.
While amd is doing everything on the gpu right before sending it to your monitor. No new window or overlay shenanigans.

In this video both lossless and afmf2 are performing the same visually in overwatch, with afmf2 being more responsive. The visuals really is dependant on the scene in a game, one will perform better than the other. In Witcher 3 Geralt head keeps disappearing/flickering crazy using lossless. Ghost of Tsushima lossless has more Visual issues than afmf2. Overall afmf2 gives me the better experience. Too much compromise is needed to use lossless fg.

*one MAJOR thing people need to know...*
FRAME GEN takes GPU processing power away from rendering. If you go from 60FPS to 80FPS then what you SEE appears smoother but you are now getting 40FPS of "true" frames and the additional lag that goes along with that and from Frame Gen. Even assuming there were NO VISUAL ARTIFACTS, the lag is still a problem particularly at a low FPS...
And WEAKER GPU's, the ones that need it most, benefit less. Why? Because Frame Gen is a sunk cost. A GPU that's 2x as fast can spend less of its processing budget on Frame Gen and therefore MORE on the generation of the initial frames. So a GPU that's 2x as powerful might get, say, "180FPS" after frame Gen but the weaker GPU might only get "70FPS" (generated from 35FPS). So the weaker GPU might have gotten 50FPS without frame gen and the stronger GPU around 100FPS... the stronger GPU ends up with minimal LAG and very smooth visuals. The weaker GPU ends up with acceptable visuals but UNACCEPTABLE lag with FG (and that's aside from the other issues).
    *What do I do?
Rule of thumb: don't use FG if the end result is less than 100FPS. This will vary a lot depending on the game and how well this is implemented.

Now with RDNA2 (6700XT), AFMF2 is mind blowing. Works in sync of FreeSync Premium, at least, perfectly. Works under movement as far as I can tell, but I was using a controller.
I was using it in God of War. I was able to take advantage of the 144hz @ all Ultra and the one Ultra + @ 1440p. NO blurring. It's the absolute picture perfect example of AFMF 2 for AMD. God of War. It'd be PERFECT for a 6600 or something, but still great for my 6700XT as I start off at 100-105fps, but later in the game, I'm at 75fps-ish. AFMF2 throws me right up to my max refresh rate, works with my FreeSync Premium (which I don't believe original AFMF did), and it feels smooth looking around. I am using a controller in this game, though.
I just got an idea. I quit playing Kingdom Come Deliverance because of performance. 5900x + 6700XT 12gb @ 1440 max/ultra was just terrible. So, even with it disabled, I crash every 2-3 maps . I digress. I'm back on the WHQL (non-beta) drivers for now until they fix the BF2042 isse. The demrit of AMD Frame Gen is you cant play old games on it or games before 2023 since the developers dont think its worth to add this now in games for few people. LS2 is better compare to AFMF.

@@JustAGuy85 I saw your latest video, bro--tough times. l've already lost both of my grandfathers, and now my grandmothers are the only ones left. I really fear losing them too. I was 13 and 17 when I lost my grandfathers. My mom's father died from a mysterious disease, and before we knew it, he was gone. I was just a silly kid back then, always arguing with him over who got to watch TV first. Before him, I had never lost anyone close to me. My whole mom's side of the family was devastated, and for a year, it was really tough. But with time, I started to forget the pain, though I still miss him sometimes.
My dad's father passed away due to obesity. The news came just before an exam night, and it was terrible. Now, I'm starting to realize that the people around me won't stay with me forever. The thought of losing my family someday scares me a lot. I have a little sister, and I fear what will happen to her once we're all gone for good. I'm not ready to lose anyone in my life yet. I dont want to be alone without them.

But that will only work if AMD got off their AS% and got the software on Linux. They have drivers on linux built in but nothing else. You still have to run Spyware to use those features.

It's amazing, BUT these beta drivers wreck BF2042. Sure, that may not affect many people in here, but I can play a map and the next map crashes (driver crash) 98% of the time.
Can't wait until they sort that out and have "WHQL" .
In the mean time, man oh man, it enhances a LOT of games. I don't NEED it in God of War.. I can run it at 1440p on a 6700XT with all Ultra settings and the one Ultra+ setting for lighting or reflections, I can't remember. I use High and Quality AFMF2. I start out at 95-100fps in that game without AFMF2 and get to parts where I drop to 75fps.
AFMF2 ALSO works with your monitor's FreeSync. At least on my FreeSync Premium. My monitor now shows 135hz or 142hz or whatever with AFMF2 whereas the old AFMF did not affect the FreeSync refresh rate for me. And, yeah, the old AFMF "showed" higher fps on the overlay, but you could not feel it.
AFMF2? You SEE it. You FEEL it. At least in the games I've tried so far. I'm gonna try it on Callisto Protocol next. See how it feels going from 1440 all max settings 35-40fps to 70-80fps. I wanna see if I can SEE and FEEL it like I can in God of War. And oddly enough, I don't even "need" it in God of War. 80-110fps (depending on area) is plenty fine for that game. But it feels SOOO much smoother with AFMF2 and like I said, my Variable Refresh Rate actually reacts to the doubled fps.
I think that's the difference between AFMF2 working and AFMF being pure placebo.

I wish people actually understood what LSFG does before they speak about it with such high praise. It also costs $7 and is a steam product its not offline its not a software i can take anywhere.

Pro hack: if you cross your eyes during the benchmarks you can see the benchmarks in 3D - thank me later 😎- just stare at the middle screen of the 3 and hold your phone atleast about 8-10 inches away

the problem with frame generation isnt that nvidia and amd don’t know how to make frame generation good… it’s that they know they can’t make it too good because it’ll render future gpus completely obsolete. The lossless scaling developer doesn’t care. Why buy a new 5090 when your 3070 can get 150frames and have it FEEL like 150 frames?

I heard that if you cap your fps , 2 fps lower than your Monitor refresh rate, it basically makes it impossible to turn off AFMF.. Didn't try it tho
