    We were the first ones to watch and the first ones to comment on Yaba's new channel!!! Yeahhh We are so excited for you guys!! We already love Yaba and we will have mix feelings when you guys leave Guarujá soon. We will be happy because that means Yaba will get the treatment she deserves but we will be really sad as we will no have that HUUUGE ROUND TABLE AND SOFA with such good friends to hang out after a long day of work at Odd. You guys are awesome and in no time Yaba will be at her best shape ever!! Love Duca and Roberta

      Duca and Roberta, I hope that YOUR stay in Guaruja' will be coming to an end soon! It started out as a couple months more than a year ago! Don't let the refurbishing of a "sinking ship" beat you to relaunching. But don't rush anything, either. We want ODD to sail for years!

      Odd Life Crafting were here..... to support you in your new journey above the waterline! Although I'm a submariner retired from the US Navy! Let's keep Yaba' out of Davey's locker!
      It's going to be more than a "few months" unlike what 😉Odd expected! 😳🤣😂🤣🤓 but let's give it a goooo!
      I salute you in this journey and wish you fair winds and following seas!
      Now is the time to get the join icon up! Or patron! Oh yeah I need to join Odd to its odd that I give 75$ to land lovers eh!

    You guys are cute. Reach out to my buddies Lucas and Neto on Katoosh, I'm sure they would love to help their fellow countrymen (and woman) with the channel exposure. This will be such a cool learning experience. You guys have some serious cajones buying that as your first boat. Good job, way to live your life. Make yourself a cheap high water alarm before going on that trip - take two nails, drive them into the wood at the appropriate level - hook to battery - hook to car horn, electric bell, whatever is cheap - water completes the circuit and lets you know the bilge pump is clogged/dead.

    Good for you for being committed to saving Yaba! We have lived on old wooden boats (60 foot built in 1912 & 80 foot built in 1928) for 20+ years. We wanted to share some tips we have learned:1) if you have no animals on board, paint the wooden beams with a thin coat of good quality glycol to help kill/stop the wood rot. 2)mix 1 part acetone to 1 part liquid Gorilla Glue and inject it into any wet wood that might be savable, as Gorilla Glue is only activated by moisture. It will turn your wood hard as rock. Use a large guage syringe, such as used on livestock. 3) figure out how your decks are built. Watch videos on how to replace the oakum and tar between the deck planks. Buy proper tools for replacing oakum. 4) check your stuffing box for leaking. Fix it. 5) get underwater video footage of entire hull, thru hulls, prop and rudder. Examine it closely to learn about your boat. 6) find other old wooden boats that you can salvage from. Get planks, beams, hardware masts, booms, anything you can get. 7) don't wait to start real work ( e.g. not just cleaning) until you are on the hard. Start now. 8) Lift the boat sooner than later. Try to get lifted on a trolley lift, instead of slings, as it will support the hull and structure much better.
    Good luck and we will keep on watching! Feel free to email if you need more details.

We were watching their post this morning, so we can say that Roberta and Duca sent us....When I was younger I used to crew on a 72 ft yawl that was 80 years old. She used to race the New York to Brazil races. I think that was back in the early '30's. I fell in love with working on a wood boat. So, I am sure you will bring a lot of memories back to me. • @meadmaker4525
    @meadmaker4525 3 ปีที่แล้ว +11

    I'm really happy you've found such a fantastic looking schooner, and that you're exited to be boat owners, but you should really never, EVER, put down money on a boat without having it hauled out and surveyed. The content of this video is why. If they're saying she cannot be lifted out of the water, that means they suspect her frames are rotten and she'd crumble into a large lump of firewood if they tried. Not a good sign. And the longer there's water INSIDE the boat, the worse that will get.
    I know you're just beginning this journey, and you're really excited, and I really love that...I do...but you may indeed want to consider backing out of the deal, if you still can. Wooden boats are fantastic (superior to others, IMHO), and I am sure you could find another like Yaba, but in a little better condition.
    Having said that, if you do manage to get her out of the water and onto the hard, it'll be interesting to see just how bad the situation is, and the level of work it's going to take to make it right. If you get a chance, check out "Sampson Boat Co." here on TH-cam. Leo (a trained shipwright/boat builder) saved a 100+ year old wooden yacht and has spent the last 2-3 years (working full time) slowly rebuilding her, piece by piece. That might give you some idea of what's in store for you with Yaba, if she makes it out of the water in one piece.
    Best of luck to you! I look forward to the next episode!

I envy you, even the hard work.

    Roberta and Duca sent me.
    Dios F--ing Mio you guys like to swim in the deep end.
    I would suggest finding and binge watching Acorn to Arabella and Sampson Boat Co. to see what you are working with. Also Salt and Tar for a couple living on their build. When it comes to the inevitable volunteers that can help, I would go looking for people with youtube video producing experience as your time is going to be best focused on the boat work in the short term. Filming and editing takes a lot of time and dilutes from the progress content you want to attract viewers.
    Your first task is to dig down to the wood keel structure where the keel and the frames attach; that is the spinal cord of the boat. You need to know that it is usable. Also, if and when you run into the need to replace frames ( the ribs on the boat) consider using UHMW plastic ribs rather than wood. Much easier than steaming or sawing timbers to fit.

    Worked with wooden ships before, probably not one leak like other commenters, the oakum's probably rotten and the seams will be pouring some water. Caulking is not so hard, just time intensive and dirty if your hull is still good

    • @samrouse7563
      @samrouse7563 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @petnzme01 aye yeah, bigger killer is the inside out rot from the damp hull, biggest problem from the outside is the teredo, esp in a clime like brazil, but im no shipwright

    Run it onto a sandbank exposed at low tide. For a few hours each day all water will drain out. As the tide rises you will be able to identify where water is coming in. Using a fast curing epoxy and glass mat skin the outside.

      In all seriousness, don't try this with a rotten hull like this, you're gonna wreck the boat without proper supports like you get when being put on the hard by a professional.

      If you only want the boat to live on and keep in flat waters you may not be as crazy as you appear, keep the water out, and keep it close to the shore. If you want that vessel to be seaworthy then you have an Everest to climb, with money and skills you do not yet possess. Time is your biggest asset and even that will be tested beyond your imagination. You need reliable trustworthy and experienced counsel and support. Remember "Piracy started on the waterfront, not on the high seas".

    I second another commentator who recommended that you set up Patreon and PayPal accounts. These accounts will allow those who follow your adventure to financial contribute to the project. Good luck!
    P.S. When you meet the requirements to monetize the channel, please either do not permit any mid-roll ads or, if possible, limit the number and length of the ads. It is really irritating when a 10-12 minute video is interrupted three or four times with ad breaks and/or the ads exceed 30 seconds and/or there are two ads at each break.

    Hi Guys, great the you have a small ship, I was going to buy a 60 wooden schooner as well but to see it out of the water it was going to cost $15,000 Australian and that was just to look at it out of water.
    Boat was going for about $20k but needed about $120,000 to get it up to commercial standards.
    So I said no. Any way all the very best.
