I love these videos for the small tips that I pick up, like wrapping some boards in packing tape so the glue doesn't stick. Small things like that can make a big difference in a project.
Love the door, I'm actually hoping to refresh my entry way door and I don't have the tools or the experience to pull off some of the designs i've seen others tackle on youtube, so i figured i'd reach to you since a lot of your builds seem more beginner friendly. I was hoping to refresh my entryway front door. It's in good condition structurally and functionally but just needs a modern refresh. What I was thinking was using slimmer tongue and groove cedar planks (slimmer ones normally used for interior walls) and attaching them to the front side of the door only, leaving enough room to accommodate for the door frame so that everything would fit. i was planning to just paint the interior side of the door vs adding tongue and groove planks to cut down on cost and then just painting the actual door sides (since those would be hidden anyways when the door was closed). I was planning to apply some sort of stain to give the door added protection against the elements (the door sits under a covered awning so luckily it isn't completely exposed. Would this work? Would you recommend going this route? Any help is greatly appreciated since i'm a newbie and first time home buyer. Thank you in advance! Please see the images linked below to get an idea for the look I was going for. Thanks again! Please see the attached links below for pictures of what I was hoping to accomplish. Nicely done, Mike! I agree - that special walnut stain is nice with that black hardware. I use a lot of special walnut stain in spinning wheel refinishing. It's a crowd pleaser. Nice use of lap joints!
Simply outstanding! I enjoyed this immensely. Exactly the kind of simplicity and beefiness I was looking for in a door build. Will be flattering you shortly
I've been wondering the reason why is been taking you longer than usual to post videos but after watching this video I really appreciate the fact that you're putting the right amount of time into a project to make sure it has an outstanding result. I've been following you and watching your videos since last year and I have to say you're work is awesome dude.
Looks great! I like the bands you put on the door...really ties it into the rails. I built one of these about 3 years ago, but at the time, all of the hardware kits were over $350, so I pieced my own together from Tractor Supply Co. Painted them all matte black too. For a handle, I used 3/4 iron pipe painted black. It is huge and looks great!
Thanks! Yessir...pallet wood. I just used a sheet of birch ply as the substrate. On the backside, I left it as just plywood, but stained to match. I also put a little inset finger pull so it could be opened from the inside without the handle interfering with the doorway or sliding of the barn door.
Great job man! It looks great. I love sliding doors. I used to build them and their hardware and do the installs. I've done a few hundred. You did a great job.
Coolest think I've seen someone build! I swear if I had a space for this I would make my husband build this. I'm going to binge watch all your videos your work is amazing 👍🏼😍🔨🔧🔩
Nice looking door and video, was wondering, with the metal pieces you attached with all those bolts, seems like that would cause problems when the wood moves.
Great job, love how simple the door was built. Since the door has been in use for some time; have you had any issues with the green lumber cupping or twisting? Also, did you duplicate the metal crossbrace on the opposite side?
you can get a very nice look on the lap jounts by chamfering the edges, that means cutting a very small bevel on the edges to make a little grove running down the jounts
Wow... I am sold, great video... the look of the door is what I want. However, before I get to it the only question I have is how can I secure the door so that anyone on the other side can lock it. Is there any hardware you recommend?
Looks cool, but I'm wondering how you would open the door from the other side of it. It might be slightly better if there was a handle there for safety purposes.
After having completed this project do you think you could have made the hardware yourself? The wheels seem to be the tough part but I think they could be made of wood.
I just wanted to say I'm mainly subscribed to tech videos and your channel is a great addition! I love everything you are putting out. One question, as someone who just moved into my first house what do you suggest I start off with tool wise? Eventually I want to be able to do some of the projects you've done.
Hey mike, I’m a patron of yours and have done a lot of your builds. I just finished my door based off of your plans, Problem is it won’t stay closed because it’s slightly off level. Any ideas before I start blasting new holes everywhere?
Really nice build brother. Any reason you went without a handle? Were you just going for minimalist looking design? And that stain is great. I'm going to have to try that out
Yeah, I just didn't put a handle to keep a real modern, sleek look. No doubt the stain looks awesome. It's what I used on my most recent video, the round dining table and it came out great as well. Be sure and use wood conditioner before the Stano it'll give an even better finish
Is there any concern about wood movement with this door build? I am planning on making one of these and so far yours is the best version I have come across but the wood swelling/contracting is making me a bit nervous, especially as I will be doing a bathroom door so the humidity will be a factor.
no problem, I love your video. I'm a joinery student in my 2nd year so it's all getting serious now. are you a trained joiner or do you make a living from your builds?
Really amazing video. Thanks for the time you put in to not only this video but also the write up. Planning making this door very soon. One question, what size lag bolt did you decide to use? I didnt see it in the write up and i dont believe there was anything in any of the few hundred comments I read.
hey mike i was wondering if you could do a diy on something a little different. for people who live in the city and have a studio apartment one of the downsides is sometimes it doesnt have an official room (hence studio apartment). I was wondering if you would have something for splitting a one room into a two rooms.
Hello, I stumbled across your videos and was blown away by all the amazing content you show. Do you think in the future you will show how to make a nightstand?
Looks great! You mention you ran the boards through the planer to get them as flat as you could, but wouldn't you need a jointer to do that? Did you just happen to pick boards that were already pretty flat and the planer was to get them all to an even thickness?
I started by picking the straightest boards I could fine (which still weren't perfect). Then I used the planer to remove any cups in the boards. I don't have a jointer, so I basically used the table saw as a fill in to square up the edges in relation to the faces
Mike, I have a quick question. When you drilled on your wall to mount the rack did every hole you drill on the wall have a wood board behind the drywall? I'm just not sure if I need a headboard on the drywall before I mount the rack or can I mount the track with having to a drill on wood in every hole in the track. I hope I'm explaining myself correctly. I'm new to all these. Haha! Please help!
I had all but two hit a stud and it wasn't an issue. I used a couple really big drywall anchors and it's really sturdy. I bet it'd still be fine if I didn't use the ancors
Hi, Thanks so much for the great video! I used your video to have someone help me make a door like this a couple of weeks ago and it turned out beautifully! It is 42" wide. I used the same hardware, construction pine, and early American stain. It covers my water heater/softener closet in the garage and is a joy to see when I drive up. Unfortunately, it warped vertically (bowed out in the middle) about a week after it was done. Any suggestions on fixing it, or will I need to try again? What should I do differently?
Aah,man! that can happen sometimes when you use construction grade wood. It can have high moisture content and curl as it dries. The best thing to do is let your boards dry before you use them (I should say that on video more often) to minimize movement. There's a couple options, though. You could do an X pattern on the front or back with more wood or even some steel pieces to help pull things back straight
No reason particularly. It's really to open/close it without one and I liked the clean look without one. A handle made from black pipe would be really cool
If you have access to a jointer, using it rather than just a planer, will make your boards perfectly flat. So when you join them together there is no bends or twists
I love these videos for the small tips that I pick up, like wrapping some boards in packing tape so the glue doesn't stick. Small things like that can make a big difference in a project.
Nice dude, that's awesome!
Glad I saw this build after the towel/TP organizer. My wife wants to replace the laundry room door with a barn door. Looks doable!
Right on! Definitely

Nice use of lap joints!
No doubt! I'm going to be using that stain a lot more
Looks amazing. The lap joint worked very well.
Yeah! I hadn't used lap joints for a panel glue up, I worked well
I love it🤩
Simply outstanding! I enjoyed this immensely. Exactly the kind of simplicity and beefiness I was looking for in a door build. Will be flattering you shortly
Daniel Balfour what’s up 😍

That's awesome! I saw another door online with a black pipe handle, I bet it'd look good.

Great build Mike, very simple and nice one with lap joints, I always pick up something new from your videos.
That's awesome, I'll keep trying new stuff!
Awesome video man, thanks for the hard work!
Thanks brother! I appreciate
Nice looking door and video, was wondering, with the metal pieces you attached with all those bolts, seems like that would cause problems when the wood moves.
I'm not an expert in wood movement, but I bet it'll be fine

Great video, really like the stain
Yeah me too, I'll be using it some more

Great build.

I haven't seen anything like that before. It may have to be something that you'd make custom
This is awesome never knew it was so simple
Surprisingly easy haha!
muy bien , me gusto mucho el trabajo , quedo impecable , muchas gracias
That looks great! 🤓
Thanks!!
Awesome video, man!
Thanks a lot!
Dude, awesome build and editing 👌
Thanks a lot
Nice , love that style
Thanks!
nice background music. sounds awesome and the door looked great!
Thanks!!
Woodworking Guys, you meke realy Excelent things!!!Greate Job!!!
Thanks!!
Looks cool, but I'm wondering how you would open the door from the other side of it. It might be slightly better if there was a handle there for safety purposes.
Hey that stain looks really good! Great project man !!
Thanks!!
After having completed this project do you think you could have made the hardware yourself? The wheels seem to be the tough part but I think they could be made of wood.
The tough part would be the casters and straps for the door. I've never bent metal or anything like that. I assume if that's simple enough you could.
Great video! Thanks for making it
No doubt, Thanks for watching!
beautiful looking door, giving me ideas for my garage doors...
Awesome!!
I just wanted to say I'm mainly subscribed to tech videos and your channel is a great addition! I love everything you are putting out.
One question, as someone who just moved into my first house what do you suggest I start off with tool wise? Eventually I want to be able to do some of the projects you've done.
I think it depends on the types of builds you want to do, but a whole lot of projects can be done with a circular saw and a drill
Really good stuff.
Thanks!
Congratulations my friend.
I liked.
Thanks a lot!
Dreamy! Hoping I actually get to make this one...
Do it!!
as a woodworking Beginner, would you rather advise me to buy a circular saw or a jigsaw first?
If you have a lot of projects in mind with curves, then a jigsaw. Otherwise, I'd go with a circular saw
+Modern Builds Thank you!
+Modern Builds Could you maybe Name some different jigs? So i can Search them up?!
fantastic, easy peasy...much appreciated!!!
No problem, glad you dig it!

Крутая дверь получилась. Молодец
you're very talented
Nice job!
Thanks a lot
no problem, I love your video. I'm a joinery student in my 2nd year so it's all getting serious now. are you a trained joiner or do you make a living from your builds?
Not trained at all. I'm all self taught... or youtube taught. Yeah, I do furniture commissions and youtube full time.
Impressive my friend
Ah man, that turned out brilliant! Top stuff 👌👊👍
Thanks Richard!
Fabulous! What about the previous strike plate in the door jam?
One of those nights when wood work is whats in my feedcant stop watching , need to sleep
Haha!!
Really amazing video. Thanks for the time you put in to not only this video but also the write up. Planning making this door very soon. One question, what size lag bolt did you decide to use? I didnt see it in the write up and i dont believe there was anything in any of the few hundred comments I read.
Thanks a lot! I think the lag screw I used were about an inch or so. Long enough to bite in, but not poke through the back

great, thanks for the response. Cant wait to see!

it looks nice! Keep up your good work! :)
Thanks man, Will Do!
Beautiful and I love the simplicity. Great video! :D
Thanks s lot!!
nice video! hope they don't ever need to lock the door
Nope, It's just for a closet
Great your skil, really respect you
good job dude
great build.
Thanks Scott
Really nice desing, what about a knob or a handle for that door
I thought a black pipe handle would be cool, but you definitely don't need it

Special Walnut is THE BEST!
Yeah! I'm a fan
looks great. why no handle?

Love love love

Love your channel, keep it up and you just got another sub.
Awesome! Thanks a lot
Wow!!! That's a really nice door!!! Did you use pine for this project??
Thanks a lot! Yep, pine from Home Depot
Great work! Please advise few door handle options for this project.
You should do a modern closet
nice video Mike
Thanks!!
Hi, how far is it from the door to the wall?
Would love to see a tour of your place with all your builds. Maybe on your next Q&A...?
This came out really good. I feel like the door should have been a little wider to make it look more dramatic on the big empty wall.
I just emptied out the wall for the install/video. There's actually a gun cabinet and and side table that go against the wall.
Still holding out for that Eames chair :) gunna be a tough build!
I know!! I want to do it... I think I'll try it this winter
