  • How to Set Up a Subs Mix - #AscensionTechTuesday - EP010
    This week for Ascension Tech Tuesday, Chad will demonstrate his method for sending a separate signal to your subs. When done correctly, this can improve both your live sound and recordings from your church!
    He's using a Behringer X32 but this method will work for most digital or analog mixers.

    Thank you great info. Love it, question is can I do this to my speakers if the highs comes of the the high pass of the sub can I still do mono on the subs thank God bless.

    • @AWTechTuesday
      @AWTechTuesday  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      If you wanted separate control to your subs, you would need to rewire your system to have separate cabling to each speaker (or you could link the subs if you're running out of outputs).
      Let me know if you have any more questions.

    personally if i was mixing with an x32 or m32, i'd use the inbuild matrix crossover function. if you don't need all of the matrix mixes you can setup the x32/m32 as a 2 way or even 3 way crossover.

    when set up like this and I am running sound, am I still able to use the fader for the selected instrument, say like Kick... Im running sound and the kick is loud, or I want more kick, can I adjust the fader, or do I have to adjust the gain, or do I adjust the mono signal to the sub, thats were I am getting confused if that makes any sense.

    • @AWTechTuesday
      @AWTechTuesday  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      The fader still controls the level. Because the M/C mix is a post-fade mix, as you raise or lower the fader for the kick, it will go up or down in both the mains and the subs.
      Hope this helps :)

    My problem is, that I have two reference monitors and a subwoofer, but, I just use my Korg Kronos! I use "combis" on the keyboard, which is basically a group of instruments/sounds on their own channel/timbre with their perspective effects and mixing. So a wide range of frequencies are used in any given combi. anything from high flutes, to deep bass and everything in between. How can I configure the monitors and the subwoofer on the X32 for that? So as of right now, I used two channels on the X32 for left and right. Just those two for the inputs.

    Hey Chad, I have a question and I’m unsure if you’ve already covered it or not. Our board is set up to use Aux 1-6 for MultiTracks and I don’t know how to keep the MultiTracks up and ready to go for service and also have an iPod hooked up since it also uses those Aux channels.
    For a while now I have been going into the “Routing” tab and quickly switching from Aux Insert to Card 1-6 before service, however because the TRS input has a lower volume than the USB card input, I have to remember to turn down the tracks at the beginning of service to avoid blasting our people’s ear drums. So far it has worked, but I want independent control of the MP3 on a separate channel from the Aux 1-6. Is this possible?

    • @AWTechTuesday
      @AWTechTuesday  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      You may want to get a stereo DI and run those channels through a couple of the XLR inputs. That may make your life easier.

    • @AWTechTuesday
      @AWTechTuesday  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hey Juan, I can't give you a definitive answer without seeing your room in person. Best advice I can give is to start by listening to some professionally mixed and mastered tracks (in stereo, if your system is in stereo) on your system and adjusting your sub levels to that. If you can get a solid sound out of that with no processing on the individual channels, that will put you in a better position to mix the low-end of your band. If you still cannot get good low-end then maybe you need to double check that you have enough subs and that everything is working properly.
      I hope this helps.

    Where does the M/C output on the x32. I know its a daft question lol. Or does it run on my existing LR mix output?

    • @AWTechTuesday
      @AWTechTuesday  7 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Excellent question. It does NOT come out of your LR mix as it is made to be a separate output. As a default, your main LR comes out of XLR Outs 15 and 16. As far as I can see, the M/C mix does not have a default output, but rather, you need to assign an output from your Routing->Out1-16 menu. I often assign it to come out of XLR output 14 so it's next to my LR but you could honestly send it out of any output.
      I hope this clarifies things.

      Ascension Worship - #TechTuesday so i would assume that it is effectively the same as setting up a aux purely for this method of mixing. We are hosting a huge event at an outdoor venue today and have it set up as LR and Aux to subs. It is so much earlier to control the LF now than what it is just using the LR. Nifty little trick. Thanks man.

    Obviously I'm a little later to the discussion, as this video was posted over a year ago. But, after watching many videos on splitting the FOH tops from the subs. I am struggling getting a M/C signal from the Aux (iPod), to come out of the subs. As well as, when I use Matrix 1 &2 linked for stereo, I route them to outputs 3 & 4 (main L/R), after setting my crossovers, I get all highs on the left and all lows on the right, subs and tops. What am I doing wrong?

    • @AWTechTuesday
      @AWTechTuesday  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey Jacob!
      That is very odd. My first thought would be to verify that all of your patching and cabling is correct. I personally use the oscillator to do this. If you haven't done that before, here's a video that explains it - th-cam.com/video/TA3EFW9Fubc/w-d-xo.html
      Please let me know if you're still having issues after testing all of your outputs.

    • @freefloridian
      @freefloridian 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Ascension Worship - #TechTuesday Hey Chad, I used the oscillator and everything is coming in fine and outputting correctly. I've done everything that is required to separate the tops from the subs. I used Matrix 1 & 2 for stereo L/R (which works fine), applied low cut filter, then used Matrix 3 for subs (which will not output through the subs?). If I solo Matrix 3, the matrix is receiving the signal and I can hear the LF, but it will not go out to the subs. I am running 2 behringer 15" powered subs. Any thoughts?

      Having me tweak EQs in this instance wouldn't be much help since I cannot hear your room with your speakers and your band. If I find time, I can take a quick look at your settings to see if there's anything glaringly wrong. Or, if you need us to come out to do training and work on your system in person, that can be arranged as well. You've crossovered the LR and mono sub, so what signals did you feed to the podcast or livestream?

    • @AWTechTuesday
      @AWTechTuesday  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Depending on the situation, I'll generally send a post-fade stereo mix or, if I'm out of mix busses, I'll send a matrix that is fed from the LR mix.

    • @TangDynasty1983
      @TangDynasty1983 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@AWTechTuesday If the matrix is fed from LR, then it will lose the low end, right?

    • @AWTechTuesday
      @AWTechTuesday  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      No. You'd apply filters to the matrices, NOT the LR mix. Therefore, the low-end of the LR mix will transfer to the Subs matrix. You should apply a low cut to the Mains matrices.

    • @AWTechTuesday
      @AWTechTuesday  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      It honestly doesn't matter. Whatever connection you need. In digital mixers, most of that customizable. Generally, Left and Right come out 15 and 16. Therefore, I usually assign subs to 14.

      Check out this video next. Towards the end, I show how to EQ a matrix setup. The concept is the same regarding crossovers. The only difference is that you would apply the crossover for the subs to the M/C mix if you decide to use an aux for subs.
      If you're new to mixing subs on an aux or have a lot of volunteers operating the console, using matrices may be a better option. I've done both. Lately I prefer matrices due to the ease of use, because it saves that M/C mix for other uses, and it's generally much easier on volunteers.
      Hope this helps :)

    • @TylerTripsTunes
      @TylerTripsTunes 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      I will watch the video but what I did was put the eq settings on Mix Bus 1 because that is the mix I will use for sub. Not saying that is correct but it seems to be working by only allowing up to 98hz on that mix bus. I have the M/C setup but it is not controlling mix bus 1 I am sure I am missing a config setting somewhere but only the mix bus 1 eq is effecting the channel. Another question is I want to be able to control the overall volume after I have set the mix bus 1 where I want it for the subs. In the setup I have M/C depends on Main L/R selected and Panning mode LR + Mono but when I pull down the main fader the bus 1 mix is still at the level I set it. Again probably newbie issues thanks in advance for your help

    • @AWTechTuesday
      @AWTechTuesday  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      I highly suggest that you not use Bus 1. The M/C mix is designed for what you're trying to do. You can't control Bus 1 with the M/C because they're both mixes. On the X32 you cannot send a bus to another bus (with the exception of the LR mix). I hope that makes sense.
      You can of course put EQ on your M/C mix just like you did with Bus 1.
      To your second question, you're correct, the setting you selected only works for the M/C mix, not Bus 1. That's why the master fader is not affecting the overall volume of the subs. Only the M/C mix can be affected that way.
      You're getting close :)
      Keep at it!
