  • PSA is used to make nitrogen gas from air. Using standard air compressors, I run the air through CMS beds to remove O2, leaving close to 99% pure nitrogen. I am putting the arduino code on my website www.homemadeliquidnitrogen.com/PSA

    Have you measured the O2 percent coming out the dump valve? I imagine it varies from start to end. If it is 50% or more then it is feasible to dump the exhaust into another CMS column and get 80% oxygen. The beauty of it is that you get almost 100% recovery of the oxygen, a value far higher than an ordinary oxygen concentrator. Plus, with a lot of the nitrogen leaving, you don't have to compress so much gas.

    Hello, I’m curious about the output of that nitrogen generator? How much in terms of cfm were you able to get out of this design? And as to the design of nitrogen generators in general, if willing to accept lower purity could we get more volume out of it?

  • @Mercmad

    You had the two cylinders made for this? I am in Australia so I am thinking that is only way I will get cylinders suitable for this purpose. As the nitrogen is received at the end,can it be compressed and fed into a pressure vessel for use ? An oilless compressor would be the best thing I guess.

    I think you could boost purity (at the cost of a small amount of N2 product) by placing either an orifice plate or a needle valve between the two cylinder outputs (before the check valves).
    This would allow a small amount of N2 from the active cylinder to "backwash" the regenerating cylinder, removing more O2 than simply de-pressurising.

    To make better nitrogen you do do not bigger columns you need to slow your inlet air down going across the CMS ( front fill restrictor will do the trick) .. This will allow the CMS to absorb more of the oxgen allowing for better purity..

    This is really nicely done. Is it possible to trap off the exhausted gas as an oxygen source?

    • @Microwave89
      @Microwave89 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      I admit not to be knowledgeable in this subject but I suspect that the exhaust might well be intermixed with nitrogen. I don't think that simply because of the nitrogen being highly concentrated for the exhaust the same must hold true in the oxygen way too. There should be losses in nitrogen for cleaning the CMS then intermixing with the concentrated oxygen thus lowering its concentration. I'm not saying the process cannot be optimized for oxygen but simply that there might be two best operating points and that they indeed can differ from each other.

    • @PeterPete
      @PeterPete 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Very good question - in my opinion the answer is no! Simply because it is the type of molecular seive used that determines which 'gas' product is produced eg CMS for nitrogen and 13XMS for oxygen production. So if the MS was changed in the cylinders one would produce a different gas. In this regard also, depending upon how the CMS was made, one isn't producing nitrogen but merely adding a carbon tainting to the 'air' and everybody knows carbon doesn't support a flame!

    • @PeterPete
      @PeterPete 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      oh forgot to add - just look at home oxygen concentrators and ask yourself, do they produce nitrogen as a waste gas?

    • @stevoblevo

      the zeolite CMS is capturing the O2. as mentioned, a different Sieve would capture a different gas allowing for concentrating another. So if you wanted O2 you would use the zeolite/CMS/sieve for capturing N2 which would concentrate O2. I suppose if you wanted Argon or Neon or something you could run air thru both an N2 capturing sieve and O2 capturing sieve to concentrate what is left.

    hey I just watched your video, I am wanting to do the opposite of you, I want to make an oxygen concentrator. now I see it's interesting that you are using carbon molecular sieves, how much did you ultimately use and would that be viable to use for oxygen concentrator, since you are trapping nitrogen, you then have oxygen to, instead of ventilation, go to a holding tank, and vent the nitrogen on the pressure swing?! I would love if you would respond! I love the diy mind!!! peace and love my friends

    • @PeterPete
      @PeterPete 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      you can use exactly the same set up as in the video above - it's the molecular sieve that determines what gas product you want - to produce oxygen one needs like a 13X molecular sieve so don't use CMS!

  • @massmanute
    @massmanute 5 ปีที่แล้ว

    About what would be the cost of making one of these? For non-critical applications, can it be made from mild steel or does it require stainless. Also, what about scaling it down using ordinary pipes from the plumber for a low-flow application?

    • @imsmoother
      @imsmoother  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      A few hundred dollars for the tanks. Another hundred for two solenoids and building a circuit to control them. About $50 for the stainless piping. The material inside is about a few hundred dollars depending on if you get it in the USA or import it from China. In all, you are looking at $500-750 without a compressor. You could scale it down, but it would only affect the cost of the tanks; you still need everything else. If you are going smaller I would use a membrane, which is the other method for gas separation.
